FootbaH Showing great strength a nd spe e d, the Spartan Junior Varsity Football breezed to first place honors in the 1963 HAAL. With the record of 6 wins 1 tie and no losses, Castro Valley J. V.'s found Foothill High, despite its league standings, to be their toughest opponents with its strong defense and fastrunning backs. Fight- ing hard and with determination though, the Spartan J.V.'s managed to tie in a scoreless game and maintain their first place standing. An overall 'picture of how well the team did under Coach Brosnan can be seen in the statis- tics accumulated at the end of the season. The 1900 total yards gained by Castro Valley con- trasted greatly to the 472 of its opponents. Total touchdowns were 22 forCastro Valleysquadand only 3 for all other teams they played against. w .,, , :SFWJQLQ fl 17 , ,gl hi .Q-13-f,ii' iff3-wftA,,' .+2 i ' H1-f '! T-Ai' gf. , ,,. The Frosh offensive line prepares to meet the opposing Hayward line. A Castro Valley back goes up the center for hard gained yardage. . uw- at Kent Caldevin side steps a tackle and runs for extra yardage. A Spartan kicker gets off a quick punt against the Sunset Falcons. Starting out like all inexperienced Frosh- Soph teams, Mr. Gnest's group had an even great- er disadvantage--lack of size. This fact proved, though, to be of little significance as they fought to a first place tie with Foothill and Mount Eden in the l-IAAL. Making up in spirit where size lacked, the team showed what could result from hard work and determination. The first game of the season brought defeat upon a very young Hayward squad by the score of 25-6, but 1'1Ot until the next game with Sunset did. the real strength of Mr. Gnest'S boys become fully real- ized by defeating the Falcons 14-7. Improving steadily as they beat Tennyson 34-6 and San Lorenzo 19-O, the team looked forward to their fifth game, Mt. Eden, thus far unbeaten and un- scored upon. By playing their best game of the year, though, with many spectacular offensive and defensive moves Castro Valley proudly Won by a score of 19-7. Going on with even greater strength they captured another victory, leaving Arroyo scoreless against a total 27 points. Their la s t game and what turned out to be their most important of the season was with Foothill. Lo s- ing by the score of 9-O after aclose, tough battle, Castro Valley had to settle for a three-way tie for first place. 221
