Students in music appreciation gather around the piano to sing. A course in music appreciation is offered to all interested students preferably sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors. The main purpose is to acquire an understanding and apprecia- tion of music. They discuss music in relation- ship to history and to art, they hear the best recordings, and try to attend live concerts whenever possible. This course is of great value to students of both vocal and instru- mental music. The string players, who met 3rd period everyday, and select members from the ac- ivity band made up the orchestra. There were 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, l string bass, 3 flutes, 4 clarinets, l oboe, 3 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones and 2 percussion players. Fea- tured soloists include Jean Bowman, violin, a member of the Western Division Conference Orchestra at Salt Lake Cityi Judy Brunckhurst, violin, a member of the Northern California Honor Orchestra, and Bob Tode, viola.

Sweet, as the A Capella choir starts class. may g ,nun ANNUAL DISTRICT HONOR CONCERT This year on January 3lst, the second an- nual district Honor Band, Choir, and Orchestra Concert was held at Castro Valley High School. Honor students from Castro Valley, Hayward, Arroyo, Tennyson, and San Lorenzo partici- pated in the concert, with such distinguished guests as Jester Hairston, directing the choir, Jim Berdahl, directing the band, and John Mortarotti directing the orchestra. Trombone player Stuart Lungs is seen amidst band students from surrounding schools as the district Honor Band warms up.
