!lQe,QoZl1,o-iw lt is a great experience to be an exchange student, because he has the possibility to learn more about a foreign country, and to help to increase the understanding between his country and the country he lives in in ex- change. Now it happened to me to become an exchange student and I dis- covered that the learning about a foreign country is not very easy, because one wants to compare with his own country, but after a short time you live with the people you do not compare so much you recognize something and want to find why it is so. Very often it is a kind of embarrassing when I was in a controversy of my manners and yours, I had to learn what I have to avoid and what I have to alter. But now I begin to like certain things I did not know. A good example for this, I think, is Football, In the beginning I thought what a rough sport because in Germany there is no game where it is allowed to touch the body of a member of the other team, slowly l began to like it, I understood more and more the rules, and now I think Football is one of the most exciting games I ever saw. I have to say that this understanding of the game and the understanding of many other things or problems was only possible through the people I live with, a very nice people and I want to say thank you to everyone who helped or helps, because without this help I would like it per- haps never. -ii-1 5-fra' SENIOR SUMMARIES BENSON, RICK - Frosh-Soph Football 2, Junior Varsity Wrestling 3, Boys' League I, 2, 3, 4. My summer in Sweden is the most important experience in my life. I never thought it possible to learn so much about people in such a short time. l stayed with a Swedish family by the name of Weijkling, my Swedish father, Tord, my Swedish mother, Ingrid, my Swedish brother, Boo, I7, and my Swedish sister, Birgitta, IS. My father is a claims adiustor for an insur- ance company called Hansa, in Goteborg. The family owns a three story home in Goteborg, but spend the summer in their vacation home about 30 miles south of the city. We went swimming or sailing almost every. day. I was introduced to many new foods as well, such as eel and blood pudding. I'm sure I approved of Swedish .food, because I gained nearly 20 pounds. I was surprised I was able to gain that much weight, since Europeans don't use cars for daily travel. I either walked or cycled a good 30 miles each day, I found it rather difficult to prove false the Swedish cliche about 'weak Americans.' The purpose of the American Field Service is to create a better under- standing between peoples, their purpose has been accomplished where l m concerned. After last summer I know, that no matter where in the world or under what conditions-people are all the same. All the wonderful friendships, the unusual experiences and best of all my better understanding of people here and abroad are due to the individuals who have helped make the A.F.S. program possible, nationwide, international and here in Castro Valley. l shall always be deeply thankful for the opportunity to experience such a beneficial and enjoyable summer.
