HER MISSION IS SUPPORT The Seventh Fleet is the laraist and most Powerful force the United States has ever maintained on continuous deployment in history. Still, our entire effort must be directed toward being ready to take any kind of action at any time because we can never tell what the enemy is going to do. VADM Thomas H. Moorer former Commander, U. S. Seventh Fleet

The unofficial hut authoritative magazine Launch explained it this wav : i Military strategists recognize the importance of our overseas bases, but because of their fixed locations, the feel these bases may not always be accessible in time of emergency, [ herefore, the Navj eannot depend on such bases for its primary support. 2. In addition, a recent survey showed that nearly 99 % of all U. S. Armed Forces supplies to the Orient are delivered bv support ships. The day to day job of keeping the fleet supplied necessarily falls to the Service Force: Oilers, Refrigerated Stores Ships, Tenders, Ammunition Ships, and General Stores Issue Ships like CASTOR. To accomplish her mission, CASTOR carries more than thirty-two thousand line items valued at nearly three and one-half million dollars. Included in her load-list are medical and dental sup- plies, clothing, tools, spare parts, construction materials, and electrical supplies. These items range in price from one cent to fourteen thousand dollars. In reference to his ship ' s wide variety of cargo, one CASTOR sailor commented : We ' re like a floating mail order house, but I think we give much better service. We make most of our deliveries in person and on time, despite the fact our customers are always changing their addresses. The crewman was right, for the customers are the ships of the Seventh Fleet — alwa ys on the move; her sales territory— the western Pacific. But despite the vast sales territory and a nomadic clientele, (. VSTOR ' s 20 officers and 210 enlisted men receive numerous plaudits for jobs well done . Deliveries are made in three ways : fleet mail, in port replenishments, and underway replenishments. Since CASTOR is a mobile support ship, most deliveries are made via underwav replenishment providing on-station service to combatant ships. In recent months CASTOR ' S ability to keep the Seventh Fleet supplied on-station has been severely tested in the South China Sea. Carrier Strike Forces have remained in combat position for extended periods while CASTOR has kept them topped oft.
