When the stock market crashed on October 29, 1929, Architects Chester Miller and Carl Warnecke designed Americans were left to deal with the depression years ahead. the stately medieval Tudor, English styled building and Yet less than two weeks later on November 15 in Oakland, George Peterson Contractors built it at a cost of California East Oakland High was ofhcially opened to deal S559,284.35. The school's total ground area consisted with the years ahead. Built with the intent to hold the influx of and still consists of 10 acres. The building capacity of students migrating from San Francisco, East Oakland High could accomodate 1,500 pupils. made a striking impression in the Eastmont Community. Because of its castle like appearance East Oakland High was fondly called The Castle In January, 1930 John C. Fremont High School was destroyed F by fire, East Oakland High became not only the home of Knights but the temporary one of the Tigers too. Rumors have it that Castlemont was ofiicially called such because of its looking like a castle and the concern of making the Fremont students welcome by taking on 'lmont from fre-mont. Thus the complete name Castlemont. 2
