Baker fright, abovej, Principal, Miss Helen E. Haist Qnot picturedj, and Miss Rhoda McRae Qleft, abovej. Dr. Baker has led an interesting and varied life. A native Iowan, he was a lieutenant in the Hrst world war, following which he became supervisor for Voca- tional Rehabilitation in Northern California for the U. S. Veterans Bureau. During this time he obtained his B.A. at the University of California, culminating work begun at the University of Chicago and Southwestern College in Kansas. His entry into teaching in the Bay Area was at Tamaplias High School in Mill Valley and then at Roosevelt High in Oakland. He held the principalships successively at Piedmont and Montclair, Tompkins and McFeely, and Prescott junior High and Elementary. There followed a Vice-principalship at Fremont High, and a Principalship at Central Trade School as well as Director of Vocational Education. Since 1947 he has been principal at Castlemont. Dr. and Mrs. Baker have planned a round-the-world trip of two years' duration. Others helping Dr. Baker with plans for his retirement, are his 3 daughters, and 9 grandchildren. A Chicagoian, Miss Haist moved to the Bay Area to attend Stanford University where she obtained her B.A. and Masters degrees. Miss Haist has dedicated her years of teaching to the Oakland School District: Fremont, Technical High, Bret Harte Junior High, Roosevelt, Oakland High, Frick, and last but not least to Castlemont High School in 1952. Languages are her specialty - Spanish, French, and some English. Our Language Department as well as Ye Castle will feel the loss. Miss McRae began her career with the United States Medical Corps during World War I. The University of California was the source of her B.A. as well as her M.A. These degrees led to service with the Berkeley school system, followed by Fremont High, Roosevelt Senior High, and Castlemont High School for a total of 38 years in teaching. Her present position is Department Head of Social Studies. Miss McRae also has acted as counselor for the classes which graduated in june of 1953 and 1956 as well as helping out with the june, 1957 class. To these retirees go our best wishes for many years of happiness and leisure in all the things which are now possible.
