MERME MAKE METRO SPLASH Although boasting a Metro record that could be considered only adequate, Troy's Swimming Squad could point to a number of fine individ- ual efforts and the development of a nucleus of aquatic competitors that will bring Troy real victories in future water wars. Junior Mike Grunwald, generally conceded Troy's best all-around swimmer, could enter and place among the leaders in any event. His best efforts were in the IOO yd. butterfly in which he will have broken the I:OO barrier by the time you read this. Pressing GrunwaId's record was Mike Wade who broke the I:IO mark in the IOO yd. breaststroke and earned CIE ranking. Backing the two Mike's was a squad com- posed primarily of sophomores. Led by Bruce Wade, who should equal his brother Mike's record by the time he is a senior QIOO-yd. backstroke-I:I8 and IOO yd. breaststroke- I:2OI, the group included Doug Glover CIOO yd. breaststroke-I:2Oj and Jim Grace Q50 yd. freestyle-25 .2 and IOO yd. freestyle-'I:O3. II. According to Coach Tom Hoffman, this was the best group of neophyte mermen in Troy's aquat- ic history. k A .V . h .s ... 3 g, -. . K ,M Coach Wa l ly Munden points out field problem to Manager Al Lucero while Bob Lueck looks on. NOVICE HORSEHIDERS SHOW DIAMOND SKILLS Although lacking in depth, Troy's JV hard- ballers performed gallantly in league and non- league diamond duels. Starting pitchers Randy Lueck, Steve Jones and Bob Amador, occasionally relieved by Tony Barragan, Steve Riley or Greg Rice, were supported by a good defensive infield built around the outstanding catching of Steve Holt and Mike Coleman and the good gloves of First Baseman Chuck Cannon, Second Base- man Pablo Amador, Shortstop Mat Johnson, and Third Basemen Steve Jones and Gilbert Castello. Exceptional outfield records were turned in by John Bryant, Steve Riley, Bob Amador, Raul Mora, and Brad Pike. With Mat Johnson, John Bryant and Pablo Amador swinging their big sticks and other squad members sharpening their batting eye, Coach Wally Munden found cause for satisfaction. Returning Varsity Lettermen are on notice -- their positions will be hotly challenged by these upstarts next season. Fwf' C...
