BEFORE THE EXAMINATION Lveryone had arrived at school by 4-w am Happy and sad faces were worn by the girl for some were not takin examinations that day and others were Before the doors of the ,ym had assembled the selec ted victims the horrified irls who were to fill out the examination books wlth the answers to the lmposslble questions or so they seemed that the cunning teachers had composed All talked with unsteady WOICCS for each had a secret fear that she would be the only person in her class to fail the CYHHIIHRIIOH Floatln through the a1r were many questions of great importance The yolume of voices rose and fell as a great wave breaks against the sharp rocks on the oceanside Mysterious looks were sltuated in the girls eyes Their vision swept past each other and focussed on the door from which the fatal teacher would come Howey er the teacher did not arrive and the tension increased in their minds Small groups were pacing back and forth across the square Slowly however everyone gathered before the abominated door While the BYHITIIIIIII teachers walked throu h the midst of the girls with the test booklets whispers rustled throu h the air concerning the assi ned doom Then the chatter of the group was lessened for some of the girls had remembered the words of Wllss Banly the headmistress With much conviction she had sald that one should not worry about the comin examlnatlon but should be ready to analyze the types of questions mon sense should enable one to pass the test Moreover she had said that if one did not pass one could gain special help from the teachers Nevertheless these 1m portant SHYIHDS d1d not aid some of the poor terrified girls for whispers still floated throu h the frosty air These were usually pomted with hard and important questions Howeyer there were always the smug girls who knew the answers to all of the questions They looked down their noses at the other harassed girls If one asked one of them a clyll question she would usually look at that person in dis ust and probably imagine that she wasnt mart enou h to assoclate with her own enjoyable company Suddenly a teacher stepped out of the mysterious blllldlfl Into the structure slowly meandered the lrls who were to be tested Cone was the freedom that they had just had How slowly the clock ticked The minute hand hardly seemed to move The hated room would haye had a death ly sllence except for the scratchln of pens and the sighs and groans that were emitted from the hardened mouths of the sorry lookin pupils The examination had be un SUE LOVELAND WATCHDOG We bou ht him for a watc hdog But he mixed up his ends He wags his tail at strangers And barks at all our friends We got him for protection We thought he d earn h1s keep But he fri htens little children When he lsn t fast asleep He s very fond of hoboes And gypsies and the like But HIPS the friendly postman And the newsboy on his bike He causes feuds and lawsuits He keeps us tense and grim We bought him for a watchdo But we keep watch on him' DUFF REDLICK THE ROOM AND MY NANA I put my hand to the crystal doorknob and turned lt slowly The door opened easily and I tried yery hard to make one leg follow the other inside I then saw a scene I hope I will never have to face again paper which attempted to make the 1nter1or gay There was a small brown dresser ln the nook m the wall on whlch there was a lossy vase with flowers rising from lt ln a colorful spray My eyes lighted on a sleeping figure 1n the corner The sun was peeping through the window touching her limp bodv I walked over cautlously and sat down on the edge of the bed the mattress was soft yet firm She looked very old and wise deep graylsh lmes streaking her thm heart shaped face Pale high cheek bones gave just hmt of a beautiful young girl of many years ago As 1f she had known all the time that omeone was there her eyes fluttered open uneaslly revealmg soft round brown eyes Whlte downy hair clipped short above her ears lay fading into the pillow She looked curiously and pltlfUlly up at me askmg in her eyes why I was there and who I was Her thin plnklsh lips made a warm crippled smile her soft cheeks Cflflkllll as she did Then with a deep sigh he fell back mysteriou ly her brown eyes disappearing beneath thin vemed evellds fringed with soft short lashes That breath my grandmother had just taken had been her last She was happy now I knew Eany Eyyrs U ' 1 . , 0. - 0 ' 9 L . u. - . . - - , ' KT' 5.
