FE AR One small unbehesablv whlte cloud floated lazlly over Dlamond Head and marred the blue perfectlon of the sky The volcano was qulet and green with shrubs and troplcal ferns-chxldren played on the lower slopes and energetlc chmbers vlslted 1ts hlgh rocky polnts Beneath lt lay the lVloloka1 channel serene and peaceful for a few hours tlme To one Slde stretched the beach of Walklkl first were the prlvate sections then the hotel SCCTIOH and last the pubhc beaches People packed themselves 1nto the narrow strlp of land and the water was teemmg wlth surfers The clty of Honolulu was busy Pedestrlans rushed across the streets and dlsappeared mto shop doorways Those waltmg for a green light tapped thelr feet lmpa tlently and elbowed thelr way to the edge of the curb Horns blew and the drlvers of autos hollered at one an other Chlldren ran up and down the sldewalks eatlng 1ce cream or cold p1neapple on a stlck The glrls mu mus swlshed ln the breeze and the brlght colors shone ln the sun Lel sellers mopped thelr brows and waxed the flowers tantahzlngly ln the faces of tourlsts The Coast fluard heard about lt first then the radlo and T V stations then the people The newsmen warned the populatlon to fa ten down all movable objects and keep the chlldren lnslde A hurrlcane was headed for the lsland of Oahu Pamc spread throughout Honolulu The drlvers of cars drove toward home much faster than the allowed speed llmlt The street cars and buses were jammed shops closed and the road constructlon was stopped Small chll dren ran to the1r mamas and grabbed thelr sklrts They stuck their fingers IH thelr mouths and crled as the mamas dragged them home Once there they were told to o slt down and dont bother me now V The mamas rushed around thelr respectlve houses removlng breakable objects and generally worrymg Slmll-ar thmgs were bemg re enacted throughout the Clty The few who thought they could escape went to alr rald shelters The apartment dwellers ln the mlddle of town rushed to frlends or relatlves at the foot of the Pall The clty was soon qulet The people streamed off the beaches to thelr hotels apartments and a few to thelr homes The stores closed The hotel managers frantlc w1th fear of what would happen to thelr hotels rushed from room to room re assurmg people The beaches were soon ommously qulet a hush hung over them hke a heaxy wet blanket It was a hush of fear a suffocatlng emotlon that threatened to choke all Even the breakers w hlspered The fear was so evident It could almost be seen hang mg 1n the alr or oozmg out of hotels and the hke It was luke a monster sent by the storm to mold the human race 1nto submlsslseness Even the alley cats hld only the bhnklng vellow lanterns they had for eyes showed There was a boat leaxmg the lsland lt had been a race entry and w as returnmg to the malnland Therr radlo wasnt workin well battery trouble the crew figured The navlgator felt the storm comlng and knew h1s feeling was rlght when he looked at the barometer Dark sllent clouds gathered ln the sky The navl ator told the sklpper to fasten down everythlng that was loose and to stow away all food wmches books charts and crews belonglngs The men were soon busy the hght genoa was exchanged for the beau working jlb and the hnes were firmly secured Then they sat down to walt There were mne of them The boat was forty slx feet lon and a llght dlsplacement deslgn to boot not too good for rldlng out a hurrlcane They ht one clgarette after another and swore nerx ously every chance they got Other than the profanlty they dldnt talk much From tlme to tlme someone would get up and check a lme- everyone knew the boat was as ready as lt would ever be Fear crept up on them slowly they hadn t tlme to thmk about lt untll the work was Hnlshed Now It sllpped lnto each of thelr thoughts There were two teenage boys on board Senslble klds they were too and never caused any trouble The younger of the two thought of hls famlly Would he ever see them aga1n'7 He glanced at the p1tllCSS ocean and hls stomach tlghtened lnto a knot It was all he could do to keep from retchlng He was dlzzy and hls mouth was dry He had never thought of dylng so young He chewed hls nalls and hls face crumpled The sklpper was afrald beyond words hls boat the only thlng he loved the ln es of elght men and hls hfe were all at stake All thls could be snatched from hlm IH a second The crew was edgy and jumpv at one an other they paced from bow to stern He looked at them he was responslble he had brought them Sweat ran down hls face and he clenched h1s fist He felt hke klcklng the boat because she couldnt outrun the storm Wlld thoughts ran through hls head he wondered lf the mast would hold up Llttle dld he know that all of Oahu was experlenclng the same thln Fxersone hved together ln fear they clung to one another all afrald of losing thmgs-thelr hves thelr buslnesses their famlly and frlends afrald that thelr beuutlful Island would be destroyed Some
