Mr. Joseph A. LaFortune, member of the Board of Trustees and father of two very representative alumni, devoted long and tireless efforts to the fund-raising program and made a very substantial personal contri- bution. Hr. LaFortune represents and symbolizes in these pages, all who have donated to this cause. This volume of THE TOWERS is gratefully and respectfully dedicated to all who have made Driscoll Hall financially possible. May God bless them abundantly and we shall keep them always in our prayers. Four years seem a long time except in the case of Mike Wright who has contributed so many things to Cascia Hall in such a short time. We believe his greatest asset Cwhich everyone should havej is his ability to get along with other people. Let us take a look at his sports career at Cascia. He has lettered in football since his Freshman year. You could always count on Mike giving everything he had when he was on the gridiron. He was Co-Captain in his Senior year. Mike didn't start playing basketball till his Junior year but lettered in that year and the next His great spirit has made him a standout athlete. Since Mike came to Cascia he has always been an honor student. In such a school like Cascia that is a great achievement. He was a leader in his class scholastically. As a Sopho- more he was our class President. Where ever Mike wanders, you may be sure he will take Henry with him. That is the name of his blue '36 Ford which is usually seen carrying an extra passenger in the person of his one and only Lorene. It looks like Texas University has lassoed Mike but he isn't branded yet. But where- ever you may go, Mike, we wish you the best of luck. REMEMBER-Mr. Wright's answers to Mike's Math problems! Shortly after school began, class elections were conducted under the very able guidance of our moderator, Rev. Albert Durant. The results were as follows: President, Robert Mackey, Vice President, James Ritchie, Secretary, Phil Lauinger, and Treasurer, George Miller. The class was well represented in school athletics this year. Juniors on the football team were: Bill Combs, Ronnie Helwig, Joe Kopta, Dave Loop, George Miller, Jim Ritchie, Dan Simpson, and Bob Witucki. The last five were also mem- bers of the basketball squad, with Barritt Smith the Manager. Rounding out our Athletic year, George Park was on the golf team and Phil Lauinger played tennis. On the social scene, our parites proved to be tremendous successes. We led off with a dance and hayride early in the year. Phil Lauinger held an open house for the Juniors after the Christmas Formal. The Juniors and Seniors combined efforts for a Post-Lenten dance and later the Juniors played host to the graduating class at Grand Lake for a rousing picnic. As our final year of high school draws near, we are confronted by the task of assorting our education and putting it to use. Thanks to a wonderful faculty our high schocl dreams have come true. We will remember our Junior year at Cascia as well as any-better than most. Father Porreca was our moderator and under his supervision we elected C. Sharpe, President, C. Gilliard, Vice President, B. Sherry, Secretary. The class was represented in sports by Collins, Corbett, Gilbert, Gilliard, Hern- don, Patrick, Rice and Simons who were on the varsity football team with C. Day as Manager. Corbett and Moran were the representatives from our class on the basketball team. Carthaus, Corbett, Sherry, and Herndon were all on the golf team, Tomer, Herndon, Wallis, Stephens, Moran, and Thompson composed two bowling teams in the High School League. The yearbook took on the appearance of utter confusion as the deadline loomed closer and closer. It was rumored that they even had to pipe oxygen in through the smoke and piles of copy, as Jim Broach and Jim Callahan, the Co-Editors of the Towers, worked furiously to complete the sizable task of compiling several months accumulation of ads, pictures, and copy. In these last few days before deadline, work lasted into the wee hours of the morning as was evidenced by those blank stares and yawns during class the next day. Sounds pretty confus- ing doesn't it? Well, in spite of all the rushing about the results were quite singular in quality. The '53 edition of the Towers has completely surpassed all others. The increase not only in the number but in the quality of pictures and copy and the addition of a brand new Who's Who section have contributed substantially to it's extraordinary success. The moderator of the Towers this year has been Rev. Martin J. O'Neill who has acted quite capably in that capacity. Father O'Neill has held this position for the past five years and his ex- perience has been an invaluable aid. The crisis has passed now and the Towers has been unveiled to the public. One question how- ever, might remain in the back of our honorable reader's mind. What has become of the men on the staff? Well, they have recuperated for the most part from their harrowing night in that smoke-filled den. They have now rather gen- erously bestowed the compiling of next year's Towers on their lucky successors. THE CASCIAN The Cascian this year has been subiected to a series of improvements with regard to content as well as to form. The staff was somewhat smaller than in previous years but this condition was offset by a great increase of talent. The Advertising department reached a peak in efficiency this year thus allowing the Editor and his assistants more time for improving feature articles and other departments. The addition of a staff artist and the sparkling patter of the Super Seniors among other features contributed to a great extent in furthering this year's readability campaign. The introduction of a very different type of cover for the basketball issue set a precedent for the years to come. Up to this year there had been no definite policy with regard to printing editorials and fea- tures. They have been thus far treated haphaz- ardly, that is, included only as extra material. For the future however, it has been considered that some of the space given to class notes might be more adequately disposed of in the form of editorials and new feature articles. An increase of pictures is anticipated. We believe that this in itself is an extremely vital factor in the success of any newspaper. We are certain that if the Cascian continues to improve at the present rate, it can within a few years be developed into the most unique and readable high school newspaper in the state. STUDENT COUNCIL In the third year of its existence, the function- ing of the Student Council was not as extensive as it had been in the past. A revision on the matter of school discipline brought about a dis- continuance of student courts. No member of the council served in any capacity toward the maintenance of school discipline. Monitors in classrooms and corridors were done away with entirely. However, at football and basketball games members of the council saw to the or- derly assembly of the students. ln this regard, courtesy was extended to our guests at all home games. T DEBATING The Senior and Junior classes were united this year for a Speech Class. They met during the Activity period each day, for a half hour. The course was directed by Father Durant. In time, debating groups were organized. Timely topics and current problems were de- bated. The experience that each student received will serve as a valuable asset for self expression. To speak well oratorically requires poise, and good diction, but to think on one's feet and often speak extemporaneously as is necessitated in debates, demands absolute self-control. The so- ciety afforded ample opportunity for self im- provement to overcome many weaknesses in our early training. X D S E O B C A I T E I T N Y G l Back row: D. Carthaus, M. Walsh, D. Johnson, Rev. ALTAR SOCIETY Again this year the altar society was just as dependable as our basketball and football teams. Anyone going to early or late Masses would find these boys serving, whether it cut into their plans for the day or not. Rarely were there any mistakes, and when a problem arose it was always taken care of with the utmost haste and thoroughness. Again we thank these boys who have given their time and effort to the glory of God. OUR MOTHER OF GOOD COUNSEL SODALITY Since the beginning of the Sodality several years ago, this organization has practically doubled its original membership. The main idea of the Sodality has been to seek Our Lady's counsel and guidance in our daily lives. Besides keeping a constant vigil in chapel on First Fridays, the Sodality en- courages frequent individual visits to the Blessed Sacrament. On one Sunday of the month the Sodality receives Communion in a body at the 9:30 Mass. First row: D. Simpson, D. Keleher, T. Newhouse, B. Schumacher. Second row: J. Benson, T. Vickers, G. Curtain, D. PORRECA, O.S.A., CHAPLAIN RETREAT In accordance with the principles of a Catholic education, the school retreat is an annual obligation. The first three days in Holy Week were set aside. The daily program consisted in Mass, Holy Communion, conferences, spiritual read- ing, the recitation of the Rosary and Litany of Our Blessed Mother. In the after- noon the exercises closed with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The annual Retreat is an integral part in our education at Cascia Hall. In the attempt to educate ourselves in the Arts and Sciences, we can too easily lose sight of our spiritual obligations. Thanks to the good Fathers, who see to their responsibility that we do live up to the ideals of a devout Christian life. The message of every retreat marks a milestone in our life of spiritual progress to- ward the ultimate, the salvation of our immortal souls. X, .if , Q I I .-i., 5 .J KOMMANDO KLUB At every game throughout the year the Kommando Klub could be seen cheer- ing the mighty Cascia team on to victory. Only in its second year of existence, the Kommando Klub has made itself a permanent picture on the campus. The whole group goes by bus to many of the out-of-town games where we play football and basketball. Our six cheerleaders Barbara Geary, Tom Newhouse, Marie Sumonka, Phil Lauinger, Pat Burke, and Billy Sherry, were great. The K.-K. is made up of about one hundred members, half from Cascia and half from Monte Cassino. It boasts of a small band that accompanies the cheers. Besides filling the capacity of the Pep Club, the K.-K. is a social club and keeps the campus buzzing with activity. Mixers, victory dances, pep rallies, all keep the students active, with everything topped off by a Coronation Dance to crown the Kommando Queen and name the Most Valuable Player on the football team. All these activities backed by the Kommando Klub have had the full co- operation and participation of the students the past two years. The K.-K. is looking forward to its continuance for the benefit of the student body. Much enjoyment has been acquired from the friendships made through the Kommando KIub. ,NA NWX ANA IVVA V3 I 'Xt NM li Q KJ 1 L-1 111' l l 5222 Left to right: T. Staley, P. Lauinger, T. Newhouse, M. YOUNG CHRISTIAN STUDENTS The number of students in the Y.C.S. leaders group increased this year to thirteen and, under the capable direction of their moderator, Father LaFleur, had quite a successful year. The class representatives were: Ray Miller, Tom Newhouse, Bob Schumacher, Tom Staley, Mike Wright, Jack Witucki, Dan Keleher, Dan Simpson, Phil Lauinger, Bob Witucki, Dick Carthaus, Brian Moran, and Dick Simons. The Y.C.S. has backed many student activities in the school, city, and state, though it doesn't seek publicity as a group. For instance, the state-wide campaign of the Y.C.S. to tag every Christmas Tree explaining its Christmas Origin, State rally activities in may, and many smaller activities within the school itself, were all carried out with enthusiasm and success by our Y.C.S. group this year. The Cascia Hall group was honored this year to have one of its members elected to the highest Y.C.S. student position in the State. Tom Newhouse, a Senior, was appointed State President by the Oklahoma Student's Committee. One or two other Cascia representatives always went with Tom to all the meet- ings and workshops throughout the State, so Cascia had quite a loud voice in all Y.C.S. activities. Having quite a successful year behind it, the Cascia Hall group is looking forward to a still more successful program next year. If it has the spirit and the terrific cooperation of students and faculty it has had, we are sure the Y.C.S. will continue to be very effective. 78 ,ff D , wtf, X, -1 :Q I Uh C? P. T. A VERY REV. JAMES J. SINNOTT, O.S.A., MODERATOR The Parent Teachers Association has always been an active group at Cascia. In the past years it would meet each Monday following the six weeks exams. Parents would take this opportunity to discuss with the teachers the improve- ments needed in a student's studies. The information on a boy's rating in an l.Q. test, achievement tests, aptitude and reading tests, would be available to the parents. Various school proiects and physical improvements have always been supported by the P.T.A. This year the students presented a play for the Forum. And in January, the P.T.A. held a dance for the benefit of the school. lt was very successful. Our gratitude is expressed to everyone for their interest in our behalf. LaFleur have been entertaining, over the past year, friends of Cascia Hall in numerous the- atrical endeavors. Before Christmas a series of one act plays, sponsored by the Senior and Junior classes, marked the beginning of the Drama Club's activities. The Seniors en- tertained with two satirical comedies, The Idyllings of the King and Shades of History with due apologies to Tennyson and Shakespeare respectively. The Juniors presented the following week a very appropriate Christmas story en- titled This Strange Night. Lloyd Douglas' dramatic novel The Robe took the spotlight as the annual big spring production. This endeavor, greatly contrasting with last year's sophisti- cated comedy hit Season With Ginger, was dramatized by John McGreeney from Mr. Douglas' novel. This production enioyed a prosperous and well-received three night run during Holy Week in the Chesnut Gymnasium. This Theatre in the Round presentation was a delightful innovation in the field of drama at Cascia Hall. Previous productions had been comedy almost in their entirety, Cascia Hall students were assisted in this paramount effort of the year by Monte Cassino girls whose unselfish contributions in time and inconvenience were greatly appreciated. fi' - Av 'Tv' if I ?Iag5 Top left picture: Cast of Idlings ofthe King.
