Abrent when picture was takeni Wlarren llutleii Some thirty-five men reported out for football when the day for the first practice was at hand. Coach Larry Becker took over the reins with George Taylor. an old Texas A. 64 l. luminary as assistant. Shortly after the start of the season Steve Cullinan and several of the alumni lent their efforts at getting the team into shape. Wliztt promised to be a profitable season was in many respects a disappointing one. The team showed its real calibre in the O.M.A.. Holy Family. and Marquette games but showed ineptness at other times and certainly lost every toss of the coin to fortune. They got nothing which resembled a break all season. In the Round Robin affair that opened the season. neither Marquette, Holy Family. nor Cascia showed much of anything. Wleb- ster B provided the first competition on 58 the schedule and not too much of that. Cascia won, I9-O. The first real contest was with Sequoyah Indian School. A little ner- vous, the Commandoes still dominated the play but couldnt get the ball past the final five-yard marker and so wound up with a O-O tie. The next game was the intra-city game with Holy Family. Neither team could man- age an offensive against the other. Cascia had somewhat the better of it until the final quarter. XYf'ith minutes to go a Cascia half- back fumbled behind his own goal line. Holy Family recoveredg the green-shirted Crusad- ers converted to make it 7-O. and the game was over. The team then went to Muskogee and met St. -loe's. Again the Cascia team continually marched up the field with the ball. almost at will. The trouble was that penalties nullified every drive. long penalties that hurt. St. Joes put one series of passes together for a touchdown, and the game was theirs, 7-O. Cascia finally gilt hack into winning ways when they faced Texas Country Day from Dallas. The Texans hrought up a light hut speedy team that went down hy the score of 26-IS. The Commandoes looked sharper in dropping a I9-7 decision to O.M.A. then they did in defeating Country Day. Except for the long distance running hy O.M.A.'s speedy Massad. Cascia packed as much power offensively and defensively as the powerful cadets. On Novemher 9, for neither time nor reason. the Commandoes called an end to activities at the end of the first half. lead- ing l5-Og and so St. Gregoty's proceeded to manufacture three touchdowns via the air and went hack to Shawnee with the victory. Statistics favored the Meteors in the first half and, typically, the Commandoes fumhled around the goal line to set up a Marquette score. The half ended with the Meteors in front. 6-0. Bearing out the prediction that statistics mean little in this battle, the Commandoes came out for the second half all fired up to go and proceeded to knock off Marquette, I l-0. Wfe had a tough time downing them 35 to 26. ln the follow- ing tilt the Cascians tasted defeat for the first time at the hands of a versatile O.M.A. team. We put on a seven point rally going into the last minutes hut it was just one point short. Final score 22 to ll. The next game started off the second half of the seasong and Cascia started it off right hy heating St. Michaels li to 55 in a yery rough game. After two weeks without a game. Cascia went wild in the next tilt with Holy Family trim- ming them hy a score of ll to 7. Score at half-time was 28 to ll. The Commandoes looked yery sharp in their return game with St. Anthony. The whole team found the scoring range as they downed the Saints 55 to 21. St. Aloe handed us our first Conference defeat winning hy the score of 36 to ill. Bill Bun- yard did not play in this game hecause of illness. and Fred Bieherstein fouled out in the third quarterg howeyer. Cascia didn't have the zih they had shown in hreyious games and they iust couldnt get going. Cascia wound up the regular season downing Marquette Sl to 2 l. Next came the Catholic State tournament. Eyeryhody was at a high hitch for the Commandoes' first game with St. Marys of Ponca City. Cascia was top-heayy favorite to take this game. and no one thought St. Marys would give them too much trou- hle. Yet that night just wasn't Cascia's night. XY'e led one roint at halftime. Cascia came cut for the second half in high shirits and it looked for a little while like they might turn the tahles. ln the middle of the third ouarter star center Al Nor- wood split a cartilage in his knee after iumhing high to inter' cent a Pass. ' Q . X - X A . x ,M EES Again this year according to tradition the student council sponsored several dances, all of which were held in the Chestnut Gymnasium. The first of three big dances, the Halloween dance was held on Nov. l. The gym was decorated with orange and black streamers, hay, pumpkins, black cats, moons, and witches. Everyone there had an exciting time, and loads of fun. The Christmas Formal, Dec. 20, was a tremendous success. Blue and white streamers, many-colored Christmas lights, decorated Christ- mas trees, all blended together to produce the age old Christmas spirit. Denny Keleher and his orchestra furnished the music, while the many couples present enjoyed the dancing to the utmost. The Spring Formal, May 21, blue and white streamers adorned the walls and ceiling, and this, together with the color of the season, made the formal the most beautiful dance of the year. Denny Keleher and his music was enjoyed as much if not more than before. This was the end of the dances for this year, but next year, and in many years to come, the dances will be carried on with the same spirit with which they were started, which typically belongs to Cascia.
