Now, in our high school years, this seems especially difficult for we many times feel alone, excluded, misunderstood by others, and literally confused with life in general. We long to express our thoughts, and feelings to others. We wish to have friends, to be knowledgeable, to develop our special skills, to be successful in things we choose to do, and to get the most we can out of life. We all yearn to be loved. All these things — our wants and needs, our quest for knowledge, our desire for love— fit together like pieces of a puzzle to form our real self. Because each and every one of us have pieces of our self-puzzle missing, we must search for them. Through our whole lives we must continue to search, for never in our lifetime is the puzzle totally complete... In our day-to day living we come into close contact with many different people. But it is through our association and cooperation with them that our relationships grow. Our personalities are reflected by the friends we choose, and the activities we are active in, Thus, the Search For Self-Expression continues... ►Ui Sometimes we feel we must be alone with our thoughts. We feel we just have to get away from the crowd and look inward. It is through this introspection that we come to know ourselves better. This may be shown in the silent kind of searching, as we do when with the one we love. It may be like the melancholy feeling that comes over us on a rainy day, or the heavy hush that falls over us when we walk into an empty church. Learning, itself can be a form of looking inward. Many times, we attach memories or anticipation to songs, and then every time we hear the song, we are drawn inward to reflect upon ourselves. These private, inner reflections are just examples of our continual Search For Self-Expression... Everyday we seem to cry out for means of expression, which will somehow make us be unique individuals. For many, this means of expression is through creation, or use of our skills and talents. Every new day can be looked upon as a collage of new faces, ideas, emotions, activities and experiences. Each day is made exciting because of our imagination and creation — this also makes us look forward to tomorrow. Each person is an individual, and has different interests, but we all have this hunger for self-expression... Dedication The CouGar staff feels proud and honored to dedicate the 1973 CouGar to Mr. Ben Day, choral di- rector and friend, for his nine years of exceptional, unceasing and total dedication to his students, and his special service to C.G.U.H.S. and the whole community. Mr. Day received both his Bachelor of Arts, and Master degrees from the University of Arizona. He began teaching at C.G.U.H.S. the fall of 1964. When he first came, the choral department was almost non-exis- tent. From that start, he has built it to be the largest department on cam- pus. Under his superb direction his choirs have brought state-wide acclaim to C.G.U.H.S. Currently, Mr. Day is director of nine groups — The Choral, Varsity Singers, Blue Notes, Balladeers, Soul Singers, Girls Chorus, Boys Chorus, a new group started this year called the Choraliers, and the Trinity South- ern Baptist Church Choir. Besides the sometimes arduous task of teaching six large classes every day, Mr. Day’s list of services and activities is by no means complete. During non-school hours, he has proven to be a fantastic Junior class sponsor, by helping plan the prom, build the Homecoming float, work in concessions, and order class rings. He has given much assistance to the Drama department by work- ing out the complicated lighting effects for the plays, and operating the equipment the nights of the per- formances. To the Band, too, he is indispensible, for he announces the half-time proceedings at all home football games. Who is that familiar face one always sees at every football game, tennis match, swimming or track meet? Why, Mr. Day, of course! Come rain or shine, he is always there to help operate the scoreboard, or time events. He commentates at all the basketball games, and usually starts the game off to a good start by singing a first-rate rendition of our National Anthem”. And so, for these reasons we feel no one could be more deserving of this acknowledgment than Mr. Ben Day. But most of all we want to express our appreciation for having such a fine individual, teacher, director, and above all, friend to everyone, here at C.G.U.H.S! In our lives we hold some objects and beliefs in much reverence. This inspiration may be directed toward God or country. This can be the patriotic feeling we experience when we see our flag flying free in the breeze, or the sorrowful reminder we get every time we look at a cross. Our patriotic and religious feelings may differ in degree, but this is part of our individuality—a part of our self-expression ... Besides being a place of learning, school also provides a backdrop for fun and involvement. We are with our friends, doing the things we like to do. These friendships carry over beyond school hours, and our fun continues. We all have different ways of spending our time - whether it be floating down the river, sleeping in the library, or cheering in the rain. Our preferences for means of recreation tell others something about us. By always wanting to try new things we continue our Search For Self-Expression. . . And so we are now at the time in our life when we must look ahead and make decisions about our future. Often this great weight of responsibility presses down upon us, and we feel crushed, unable to go on. But we must realize that life always has its ups and downs, and, given time, things will usually work themselves out for the better. So, no matter how bad things may seem, we must not despair, but continue our never-ending Search For Self-Expression. 16 Self-Expression Through... Even my limited knowledge of German couldn’t keep it from being a fantastic experience. I loved every thing—the Olympic grounds, the Danube, the folks’ festivals —but the people impressed me most. When we walked into a store everyone turned to say Gruss Gott” and when we left everyone stopped to say Auf Wiedersehen!” Even in the biggest cities all of the stores closed between noon and two o’clock so every one could go home and eat with their family. I could really learn to like a society like that. If I have to pinpoint the greatest thing I learned (aside from eating spaghetti properly), it is that people all over the world are basically the same. My German father lectured my sister on why she couldn’t have a car, my twelve year old brother was a finicky eater, and Grandma loved to cook for us. I kept thinking, Why, everything is so American!” until I realized everything was just human! Jennie Ethington 5 8 CHANGE - 73 NHUNG FROM SAIGON Everything seems lovelier as the time passes by. I really enjoy living in Arizona, the state is full of natural miracles. I’m amazed at snow, at the land- scapes which I hardly believed could exist in a desert state.” I became happier with all the friendly people who always smile and say hello to me although I’ve never talked with some of them before. Evidently, this is the most important chance for me to know by myself your people, your country, and other things that one time I could only find in books. When my year is over. I’ll remember forever the wonderful experience of being a foreign exchange student at Casa Grande Union High School. Nhung Hong Vu 59 All State Choir arwd- Top row: Jon Secrest, WarimKke Tom Norris. A distance runner during a ten month period becomes extremely well-conditioned in search a dream —to become a champion! Those runners who take distance running seriosly in Casa Grande Union High School will run between three and four thousand miles during ten months. To those who cannot comprehend such dedication, it is four thousand too far in search of a dream. It all seems worthwhile when the races are won, the records are broken and championships settled. During Cross Country season two athletes worked extremely hard toward becoming champions. Bobby Alejandro, who was undefeated in dual-meet competion. won second in the state finals. Angel Quintanar finished 29th in a field of 140 runners. Also working hard were Rick O’Neil Gilvert Rascon and Bruce Davis. I feeI a great sense of satisfaction as the final pages of this book are at last completed. This year’s staff mem- bers have been reliable beyond description. All of them have spent many hours outside the classroom working on pages, some until two or three in the morning in order to meet a deadline. And, I am very proud to say, we have met every deadline, sometimes even early. 1 would especially like to thank Mrs. Cummings, our sponsor, for her superb guidance and concern. I know we could never have put this book togeth- er without her! Finally, a thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Hal Reames who were always patient and cooperative. Now that we’re finished. 1 can only hope that you, the students of C.G.U.H.S. will enjoy this book, the fruit of our Search For Self-Expression! 4 SENIORS Escalante. Charmatne 114 Kdhngsworth.
