virginia rosbach m.a. university of texas ralph smith b.a. arizona state college the Spanish department this year is trying to emphazise oral expression to a greater extent than ever before, the first year stu- dents are started out with “platicas” which means small conversation. they are the basis for beginning conversation, the first year classes are conducted in Spanish some- what with the goal of conducting the entire class in Spanish. Spanish II emphasizes verbal usage and vocabulary study. mrs. rosbach instructs Spanish II with a continuation in oral conversation and advanced “platicas”. the students receive abetter understanding of practical Spanish this way.

laverne hudson, b.a., ouachita baptist college ila johnson, a.b., parsons college alien e. mcginnis, b.a., university of arizona department freshmen english students undertook a read- ing development program for the first time this year, they also concentrated on spelling improvement and basic grammar rules, many classes were enlivened with oral work, such as panel discussions and impromptu speeches, mrs. johnson, mrs. hudson, and mr. brun- stein are the three adept english 1 teachers. ■■■ mr. acuff’s and mr. mcginnis’s english 111 classes study the dif- ferent phases of american litera- ture. the past year a great deal of emphasis was placed on mastery of basic spelling words, including those which are used and misused the most, since this is the last year of high school english for about half the juniors, much is taught and reviewed. 19 -
