' ,? r°foj, t ie °o a - « ' . ! - 9 - 09607364 as superintendent of casa grande union high school, mr. curtis works to further the growth of our school, his guiding hand is felt in all departments as all stu- dents realize and appreciate the many tasks he performs for their benefit, each and everyone of us extend our graditude to him. ctguhs school board the casa grande union high school board members through their united efforts have performed a major job in the community, they are the ones that represent the people’s wishes regarding the school, and have spent long, hard hours trying to carry them out. we have an outstanding school which is due in a large part to the board’s devotion, they have achi- eved for us state-wide recognition in many educational fields, for this they deserve much credit. 10 - the assiduous and important job of keeping attendance, absentee, and make-up slips re- corded is taken over by competent mrs. dorothy brown, she holds a great responsibility in our office staff and carries it through effectively. mrs. bonebrakes’s endless duty has been keeping records of all clubs and classes, she is the genial person at the bookstore who takes care of expenditures of the school and aids in selling books and materials to the students, she always has a cheerful smile for all. mr. curtis is fortunate to have such a capable and dependable private secretary as mrs. mild- red hannon. she manages her secretarial work efficiently and she takes care of all school correspondence and takes minutes at school board meetings. june harris, one of mr. brown’s helpers, works in the office every monday morning filling out absen- tee slips. 11 bill trappman, president gerry peters, vice president barbara tribble, secretary ann ryan, treasurer f student council student council, governing body of our student body worked hard all year. They supervised the freshmen initiation at the mountain, attended the student council convention, sponsored dances, and handled the govern- mental porblems of our high school. the student body officers, leaders of the student council, function as the head of our student body. they are four outstanding students who have contributed much to make this a prosperous year. 13 - t.o. beach m.s. university of arizona victor edman b.s., m. of ag. university of arizona the ultimate goal that both mr. beach and mr. edman are striving for in the agri- culture department is to establish boys in farming or a related occupation. agriculture 1 is given as a general farm- ing course to help students discover whether or not they are interested in agriculture as a life work, it familiarizes them with the many phases of agriculture. the second year agricultural student learns the actual production methods as well as an introduction to farm shop, students are required to begin a farming program in their second year along with class in- struction. agriculture III begins sectional speci- alization in the fields of animal breeding, special crops, soil and water management, and farm shop, a farming program is also required. the fourth year of agriculture primarily deals with farm management and helps the student get established in farming, work on projects and farm shop is included in the years work. agriculture is a wide and extensive field and gives a boy an insite into the agriculture field after graduation. arl and speed) david hardaway b.a. arizona state college mr. hardaway heads the expressive art and speech departments. art is available to students who possess the talents and desire to do creative work. mr. hardaway covers the fundamentals of drawing and painting. opportunities are presented the student to enter local and state art shows. the speech and dramatics department gives a student poise and voice control, the first semester includes speech while dramatics are taken during the second half of the year, students receive practice informal and infor- mal speech and in presenting plays of various types. 15 - band and chorus jane smith, b. a. mus. ed. university of arizona harvey smith, m. a. mus. ed. vandercook school of music jane smith, who is the choir director this year is new to our faculty, fund- amentals of singing, sight reading and rhythm are studied in her class, the chorus provides entertainment for numerous programs throughout the year. our outstanding band this year is one of which we can be proud, the schedule includes, band day, spring concert, dif- ferent parades and their numerous half- time shows, harvey smith, our band director, should be highly praised for producing such a commendable band. evelyn morris b. a. in ed. arizona state college frank vincent m.a. arizona state college typing 1 students learn the fundamentals of typing during the first semester and in the second semester mr. vincent, the typing instructor, gives more personal and advanced work. shorthand 1 students are thoroughly instructed in shorthand symboles and techniques by mrs. morris, who is new here this year, this course is especially designed for girls planning to do office work and also valuable to the student planning to go on to college. the picture to the left is of some students diligently doing advanced work in office prac- tice. the course includes office work in typing and shorthand. it is a definite must course for those planning to make office work a career. mrs. morris also teaches the fundamentals of record keeping and the problems of business to her bookkeeping students. 17 - guy acuff b.a., m.a. arizona state college english james brunstein robert groom b.s., m.a. b.a. in ed. arizona state college arizona state college english II, taught by mr. groom and mr. mcginnis, is a more in- tense study of the things taught in english I. a great deal of time is placed on studying the different types of writings, book reports are required every six weeks. english IV, taught bymr. brunstein, is one of the most essential college pre- paratory courses offered in our high school, a com- plete formal research term paper is required of all students, vocabulary work is stressed and a complete study of grammar and theme writing is covered. 18 - laverne hudson, b.a., ouachita baptist college ila johnson, a.b., parsons college alien e. mcginnis, b.a., university of arizona department freshmen english students undertook a read- ing development program for the first time this year, they also concentrated on spelling improvement and basic grammar rules, many classes were enlivened with oral work, such as panel discussions and impromptu speeches, mrs. johnson, mrs. hudson, and mr. brun- stein are the three adept english 1 teachers. ■■■ mr. acuff’s and mr. mcginnis’s english 111 classes study the dif- ferent phases of american litera- ture. the past year a great deal of emphasis was placed on mastery of basic spelling words, including those which are used and misused the most, since this is the last year of high school english for about half the juniors, much is taught and reviewed. 19 - virginia rosbach m.a. university of texas ralph smith b.a. arizona state college the Spanish department this year is trying to emphazise oral expression to a greater extent than ever before, the first year stu- dents are started out with “platicas” which means small conversation. they are the basis for beginning conversation, the first year classes are conducted in Spanish some- what with the goal of conducting the entire class in Spanish. Spanish II emphasizes verbal usage and vocabulary study. mrs. rosbach instructs Spanish II with a continuation in oral conversation and advanced “platicas”. the students receive abetter understanding of practical Spanish this way. guidance office i robert plunkett, m.a. u. of Colorado the guidance office has developed tre- mendously under mr. plunkett and miss burgett, girls’ counselor, it has an ex- tensive store house of information for the student interested either in college or a particular vocation preference, the department conducts a large variety of tests in aiding the student, it has helped many a student in school and home problems, this is our guidance department, guiding students to take the right road for their future and career. - 21 home economics janet beck, b.s. university of arizona jean ellsworth, b.s. brigham young university miss beck is shown here instructing two home ec. I students in the art of cooking. here two advanced home ec. students are shown putting the final touches on the garments that they are making. lee bedillon, b. s., kansas state teachers college industrial arts I J james h. metzger, b. s., arizona state college at tempe in auto mechanics, mr. staats’ students learn what makes a car tick, they study the theory and application of mechanics by actually repairing cars. the study of the theory of radios and practical application by repairing and build- ing radio units are undertaken by the radio students. this course is also taught by mr. staats. mr. metzger’s mechanical drawing stu- dents find his class very helpful in other workshop courses, practical drawings are made by class members. building trades, for boys who have had two years of wood shop, is another two- hour course involving the most advanced type of wood work along with as many projects as mr. bedillon and his students can handle. aeronautics students place a great deal of emphasis on all phases of flying and aviation, although they seldom get up in the air. most of their learning is done in the classroom. mr. bedillon’s and mr. metzger’s shop boys are carefully supervised in the use of power tools and other woodwork instruments. Charles staats, b. a. arizona state college at tempe - 23 - gladys burkett b.s. in ed., university of Oregon m.s. in ed. m.s. in lib.sci.,louisiana state u. mrs. burkett, our able librarian, is shown above looking up an over-due book for a student, this is just one of her numerous tasks she performs during the day. the library is a pleasant and quiet room where students find research material as well as books for pleasure reading, many students enjoy the helpful atmosphere of the library, the library is truly an asset to our school. linda bendixen is shown in the picture to the right using the card file, this system makes it easy for students to locate books in our library. - 24 - curtis arnett b.s. arizona state college robert armstrong m.s. university of iowa kate burgett m.a. western reserve, u. math department our mathematics department offers a wide selection to the students from general math to trigonometry, on the math staff we have our experts miss burgett and mr. thomas. mr. arnett is our able new teacher and mr. armstrong is back more efficient than ever after a year absence. mr. arnett starts the freshman off with a general all over picture of mathematical problems covering every day life, miss bur- gett teaches algebra I, which is required for entrance to many colleges, it is needed by students expecting to enter specialized fields of training such as engineering or science. mr. thomas’ geometry class developes logical thinking, the course deals with angles, polygons and relationships between them. mr. armstrong deals with the advanced courses in math, those students planning a study in science and mathematics are re- commended by their advisors to include trig- onometry, solid geometry and advanced algebra in their study. arizona mr. vincent is seen with his photography journalism class, he instructs them in using cameras, taking pictures, and printing them. fay mccormick b.a. in ed., university of arizona a definite necessity to our annual and cougar growl is the photography staff. they take the pictures and develop some of them. physical education F pat thomas b.s.e., m. ed. university of arkansas 26 - miss mccormick is illustrating to her sixth hour class how to score a strike or spare, her students make a trip over to the bowling alley daily during one six weeks, sports are diversified throughout the year, giving a well rounded program. miss thomas is shown with her tennis class, many long hours of practice go into the making of a winning tennis team. al van hazel b.a. arizona state college mr. van hazel’s physical educa- tion class provides hearty ex- cercise and enjoyable participa- tion for most boys. - 27 - kenneth w. dobson b.s. in ed., ohio state u. m.a. in ed., kent state u. science general science is pictured above, mr. dobson instructs this class to underclassmen. it ac- quaints the student with the various fields of science and helps him determine his own interest. mr. dobson’s physics students are shown above, demonstrating the mechanical ad- vantage of pulleys. physics, the study of light, sound, magnetism and electri- city gives an extensive background of study for the scientific minded student. the chemistry classes divide their time between the classroom and lab. even though there are explosions and wierd odors emitted, the class receives an interesting experience in chemistry, breakage deposits are one dollar, but they usually run higher when the ex- periments get underway. - 28 department william h. johnson b. a. arizona state college m.a. Oklahoma state u. mr. johnson’s horrified students are becoming familiar with a tarantula! - 29 - mr. groom also instructs biology, it is the study of living things and aids the students in living a more complete life in being more familiar of their environ- ment. american history, taught by mr. crawford and mr. brackett, is re- quired of all junior student’s for graduation. this course deals with the development of america with par- ticular emphasis on recent and cur- rent history and the development of the united states today. a new addition to the american history room this year was contributed by the art department and featured three murals depicting scenes from ameri- can history, done by former students under the direction of mr. hardaway, the pictures added a great deal of aesthetic value to the understanding of the three events included in the pictures. - 30 - studies democracy deals mainly with the workings of the government, responsibilities and priv- ileges of citizenship, and the study of the constitution of arizona and of the united states, this course, which is required of all seniors, is taught by mr. cours. ray cours b.s. morningside college freddy diwan, of first hour democracy, listens as mr. cours reads a section from the text. the economic conditions of the world as well as the physical geography and changing outlines of the var- ious countries are studied in mr. cours’s world geography class. this interesting course is open to all stu- dents except freshmen. i ■ al nader b.a., m.a. asc at flagstaff jack spilsbury b.s. u. of. a. Virginia garcia (below) opening the door of the driver’s training car to begin her day’s driving les- son. room 12 in the main building is the study hall where books, reports and themes are written by intense students who spend an hour of concentrated study (most of the time), mr. nader maintains this study hall. driver’s training driver’s training, a non-credit course, is taught by mr. spilsbury. it lasts six weeks and is taken during study hall or p.e. this course has proved very beneficary since many of our students have become better qualified and more courteous drivers under the watchful eye of mr. spilsbury. - 32 - opportunity master of human destinies am i. fame, love, and fortune on my footsteps wait, cities and fields i walk; i penetrate deserts and seas remote, and, passing by hovel, and mart, and palace, soon or late i knock unbidden once at every gate! if sleeping, wake-if feasting, rise before i turn away, it is the hour of fate, and they who follow me reach every state mortals desire, and conquer every foe save death; 139 - big hayward sharp goes high in the air after the ball during the chandler game. house jumps for the ball in the chandler game. junior champions kitten coach al nader gazes fondly at the first jayvee championship trophy of his career, his kitten five swept the annual tournament at eloy to be declared the champions of the old east central district. casa grande’s giant killing junior varsity crew fought their way to a very good 14-4 record during the 1957-58 season, never losing two games to an opponent, every team that beat the kittens was in return walloped by the casa grande terrors the next time around. coach al nader earned a warm spot in the hearts of his players and his fans, his tireless efforts on the practice court and his fanatical excitement at gametime demon- strated his deep love of the game and his interest in the young men entrusted to him. the kittens entered the tourney at eloy underdogs to the chandler wolf cubs, paying opinion no heed, they started things off by grounding hayden, 56-27, then quietly pul- verized chandler, 73-65, and coasted into the championship by smashing ray, 67-47. when the buzzer sounded ending the championship game, the entire squad rushed onto the floor, captain danny acuff grabbed the trophy, haywood sharp grabbed coach nader, and the team started on one of the most frenzied celebrations in cguhs history. 140 - larry williams, here playing first base, would appear to give the impression that he doesn’t want tom dingman, ajopitcher, to get any ideas of advancing to second. larry’s versatility in playing several positions aided the cougar cause time and again during the season. on a fielder’s choice in the ajo game, speedy dave linley stopped the double play attempt and beat out the throw to first. 177 - whatever the action might have been here, it brought mixed reactions from these onlookers, coach jack spilsbury, bob bru- tinel, cougar backer, and players were not going to let anything go by unnoticed, what- ever it might have been. lefty richard dominguez, cougar left fielder, kept his eye on the bail in the season's opening game against ajo, played on the local field, although the cougars dropped their first game, hopes were high for another successful season. 0 i I head baseball coach hugh crawford kept his infielders sharp as tacks during the season with constant practice during the week and before each game. - 178 - under threatening skies during the ajo game, richard -ayala, at the right, was off in a hurry to second on an infield roller down the third base line, this proved to be one time when speed counted as he beat out the throw for the attempted force. cougar second baseman richard ayala also was known to keep a cool head and a sharp eye as he de- monstrated time after time his ability at the plate. i action to the left found a cougar infielder with a throw too low for first baseman eben schurz to handle successfully. 179 -
