CM., AQLM, Sllxdlrts A Y a + S +6 X, Q Xvvert rn t ' X 0 , + The Hohokarn or ancient ones . . . the Indians of the Casa Grande Valley in days long gone by . . . those who inhabited the large pueblo near Coolidge which is now the National monument, Casa Grande Ruins, and their kindred people give us theme material for our 1952 year book. The Hohokam, about the year 700 A. D., started digging their irrigation canals: some became 25 feet wide and 15 feet deep. The canals were length- ened gradually through the years until some reached total lengths of 20 to 25 miles. All up and down the desert valleys of the Gila and its tributaries we find today the remains of their dwellings. nv , , ,K N, edication To Mr. Lee BeDi1lon, head of our department of lndustrial Arts, we dedicate the 1952 edition of THE COUGAR. His faithfulness to a difficult task, sometimes without adequate equipment, his zeal, his fortitude and his patience have endeared him to many many graduates of this hiqh school. The old saying: jack of all trades, master of none, does not hold true with him for he has mastered many occupations. School master, cabinet maker, electrician, aviator, plumber, painter, draftsman . . . all and more he has met and conquered. We, too, honor him for the devotion to this school which he reflects in countless hours and unceasinq effort toward its advancement. OPERATORS, BUT NOT THE KIND YOU THINK The Operator's Club performs a very useful and essential service to the school. The mem- bers are trained to run the movie projector, slidefilm projector, opaque projector and other equip- ment of the Audio-Visual Aids Department. The Operators state their main objective is being of service to the sch 1 Th h oo. ey ave cer- tainly lived up to that high ideal. The boys received some very practical training which could be quite useful to them later on. MRS. BURKETT'S HELPERS The Library Club serves both the individual and the school. Each member learns basic library procedures and can effectively help students to find their own material. They do much of the routine work at the loan desk daily. Regular meetings are held during activity periods twice a month. Most of these are work periods, caring for books and the vertical files. Special meetings are for varied t' 't' ac 1v1.1es. Christmas parties are given to two rooms of the Elemenatry School with the club furnishing ics cream and cookies and playing games with the children. ln the spring the club visits one of the outstanding libraries of the state. Prompters were Muriel Haskell and Pat Osborne, and business manager was Dorothy Wellman. Q11 K School Play MISS ELSA SVEHLA DIRECTS FIRST ALL SCHOOL PLAY The All School Play, sponsored by the Iunior Class was a great success this year. The play Two Gentlemen and Verona was a hilarious three act comedy. The story took place in an old farm house, which was the home of the ac- tresses of a summer theatre group. The plot involves the members of the Red Barn Players, who are expecting a talent scout from Hollywood. After the arrival of the talent scout and a great deal of trouble, the scout makes a dis- covery trorn the group. The cast included: loAnn Rosanbalm, Mary Salem, Bertha Bussari, Donna Iones, Pat Crouse, Audrey Riegstad, Iohnnie Matthews, Rex Savage, Tom Hill, Iames Buford, Frank Webb and Dale Ripple. COUGARS HAVE MEDIOCRE SEASON Even though they finished a poor fifth in the conference race the Cougars polished off some of the top teams in the Class B ranks. The Douglas Bulldogs were the first to fall to the Cats. They also garnered victor- ies over Tempe, Eloy, Chandler, Superior and Gilbert. The games which the Cats lost were all by close scores such,as games with Coolidge, Florence, Ajo, and Bisbee. Darwin Kinser, senior forward, was the leading scorer for the Cats over the season. He hit accurately on long set shots as Well as making many on drive-iris. Ken Palmer, who was switched from his guard, position to center midway in the sea- son, was a consistent scorer. Tinks favorites were right and left hand hook-shots and a variety of jump and set tries. He also played a good rebounding game both on offense and defense. loe Hammock was more of a rebounder and floor man than he was at scoring points. Ioe did come through with important points in many crucial games, however. George-Riley supplied Casa Grande with many long shots from outside the key. George was also a fine defensive man and very good at grabbing the sphere from the boards. Ron Curry was the newcomer to C. G. He came to the Cats from West Phoenix and has played his usual steady game. Ron is an exceptional dribbler and playmaker. He made most of his points on beautiful lay-ins and jump shots. ln the East Central tournament C. G. won their first game from Eloy. This victory put them in the semi-finals where they lost to Coolidge. Dropped to the consolation bracket they were then eliminated by Superior in an afternoon game. Ioe Hammock and Darwin Kinser were chosen on the all East Central tournament second team. V. is a Training Ground This year's Cougar second team was not particularly succesful in winning games, but as it should be, the players gained valuable experience that will make excellent varsity men of them next year. In regular season's play they won 10 and lost IU, They went into the East Central Conference junior varsity tournament as defending champions but were eliminated by Eloy in the first game. Coach Spilsbury alternated men on his starting five to give every boy an equal chance to show his prowess at the cage sport. AND HERE'S THE COACH COACH IACK SPILSBU RY Besides his heavy chores with the varsity, he in- stilled the fundamentals of good basketball in the freshmen and sophomores on the second team.
