Girl ar ity Ba ketball Standing Coach Sue Keller, karen Kristovich, Mary Layman, Sheri Bohling. Front row: Sue Phillips Bev Cramer, Patti Barrett Not pictured: Kim Burgess, Marie Vanciel, Nikki Plencner. This years varsity basketball tearn found Casa Grande with only two varsity players returning lrom last year. Therefore, this has been a building year for Casa Grande and a very good one at that. We ltnisherl the season with an overall record of I2-9 and a league record of 7-2. The team Hnished in second place in the SCL which was most satislying due to the inexpericnce ofthe squad and the high competiveness of the league, Our two returning varsity players, Mary Layman and Karen Kristoyich, were selected to the SFI. All-League team with Sheri Bohling receiving an honorable mention to the team. The highlights of this l97X-79 basketball season came in Drake Tournament, the SCI. Tournament in lil Mulino, and the two games against cross-town rival Petaluma, At the Drake Tournament, C'a.sa Grande Hnished in fourth place aher beating Balboa High School of San Francisco. The teams which competed in this tournament were highly rated and the Casa Grande basketball team proved that they were not outclassed. The SCI, Tournament lbund the learn bringing home a trophy hir third place. The Gauchos won the Hrst game against Analy: lost the second to Montgomery: and came back the same day lo beat Healdsburg. Karen Kristovieh was fortunate to be selected to the All-Tournament team. The two games against Petaluma really showed the capability of this ICHIH to play under pressure. The lirst game was won by Casa Grande through the talent of the team to hit crucial free throws, turning Petaluma louls into points. The second game was simply won by the desire ofthe team to pull the game out in the last lbw seconds by two points, 42-40. It has been my pleasure to coach at Casa Grande this year and to observe the improvement of each individual player. The contribution each girl has made to the team has been most valuable in the success of our season, Our two captains, seniors Kinr Burgess and Marie Vanciel, have provided the court leadership we've needed all year, and they will surely be missed next year. Their vacancies on the .squad will try to be lilled by a most promising group of players: Bev Cramer. Patti Barrett, Nikki Plencner. Sue Phillips along with mainstayes Sheri Bohling. Karen Kristovich, and Mary Lay man. The litture ofgirls' basketball at Casa Grande looks very bright due to the dedication and desire that these players have brought to the game. Their enthusiasm to excel at the game of basketball has been extremely valuable in the coachability ofthe team. My thanks to assistant coaches Margy Ayotte and Sid Shired for all their help this season. Also, thanks to our managers Sherrie Armstrong, Linda Gonsalves, and Bernadette DeVenuto Hur the terri0e job they did. I extend to our two graduating seniors. Kim Burgess and Marie Vanciel, the best of luck in their ltrture plans, This has been a good season for the Casa Grande girls' basketball team. May the years ahead prove worthy of our expectations ofthis team.
