HISTORY OF SCHOOL From a humble begrnnrng lrke the great man for whom our school rs named Carver Vocattonal Hrgh School eame mto berng Prror to tts openrng many Negro boys and grrls were gomg out rnto the workaday world un tamed and therefore un xcceptable rn helds where trarnmg was a necessrty In May 1925 the Colored Vocatronal School as rt was then called opened tts doors under the capable prrncrpal shrp of the ltte Mr Ioseph C Brrscoe rn two small bulldrngs one on Carey Street below Cumberland where the Automobrle Ctrpentry Shoe Repatrrng and Tarlorrng trades were housed and one tn the Old Tm Factory at Calhoun and Gold Streets where Dressmakmg and the Related Sublects were taught Although the school at that ttme had nerther a gymnasrum nor tn audxtorrum Vocatronal School students enjoyed a phystcal educatron pro gram gave operettas and had lovely commence ment exercrses berng welcomed by therr nerglabor Douglas Hrgh to use xts facrlrtres In September 1931 the Vocatronal School moved rnto tts present locatron at Iafayette and Carrollton Avenues where more trades more teachers md more students were tdded to the rnsntutron whrch was fast becomrng recognrzed for the trarnrng rt gave tts boys and gtrls Under the able and untrrrng guxdance and lead ershrp of tts frrst prrnctpal Carter Vocatronal School as rt was named after the death of that rllustrtous person George Washtngton Carver December 1944 attracted students from all over the crty and rn turn sent tts prepared raduates to work rn therr own and other busrnesses all over the country In February 1945 tfter the death of Mr Brrs coe Mr Stul M Perdue who htd formerly been on Carters faculty md had b en loaned to the Glenn I. Mtrtm Company durrng Wcmrld War ll 4 as personnel manager became the prrncrpal of Carver Shortly thereafter tn September 1945 Carvers status was changed from a Vocatronal School to a Vocanonal Hrgh School offerrng courses which would permrt tts graduates to be better prepared to enter rnto the more complex srtuatrons of the world of work Co educanon was also begun rn Carver about thrs perrod boys and grrls havrng been separated rn classes up to thrs trme At the close of Wtmrld War ll the populatron at Carver changed rn that rt began to number among tts students veterans who were takxng advantage of the opportunrttes offered them under th G I B111 of Rrghts Regular students and ex G I s worked together each prohtmg by the relatronshrp untrl anuary 1948 when a separate burldrng was provrded especrally for Vetertns 'Irammg Thrs burldrng rn charge of Mr Walter T 'Iurner a veteran and former teacher at Carver has a close connectron wrth Carver rn that some of the regular students take therr trade work therem Veterans students wrll strll be rnstructed rn Trade Cookery and Bust ness rn the burldmg at Lafayette and Carrollton Avenues In addrtron to these two burldrngs there rs vocattonal mstructton bemg grven rn the butld mg on Carey Street and rn the uonset Huts rn the yard of school No 122 Realrzmg that rn umty there rs strength Car vers faculty and students are dreammg ot the day when all rts trades wrll be housed rn one burldrng suntably equrpped wrth the machrnery tools equtpment and rnstructtonal maternal wrth the tecessrtres for a well rounded health and sports program wrth the atmosphere most conducrve to growth tll so closely kntt together workmg for the common obyecnve the trarnmg of young men and women to earn 1 lrvelrhood and to contrrbute sprrrtutlly and morally to the communrtres rn which they lrve s . .
