' Q ' -U. S. Grant Peace is the embodiment of human con- tention and strife. Everyone esteems imper- turbability. At the same time everyone realistically. realizes that peace is an idea that can be achieved only through the utmost cooperation of all people. People must com- mit themselves to a tranquillity Whichf in- corporates order and security to maintain peace. Cognizant of the chaos and turmoil of our domestic and international affairs and our never ceasing efforts to attain and sus- tain World peace, we dedicate this book to the idea of peace. Let it serve as a reminder to everyone that No man is an island entire of itself all a part of the main . . . g and that peace can only be achieved by all men every- where joining hands as brothers and sisters and striving together in harmony toward so- lutions to'problems for all mankind. ln every book there must be an ed'itor's message. A book that would be of great value and importance to every student at Carver from the upper crust, to the little people like me. But seriously spe-aking, working with the annual is an excellent experience in working with people. When we began, we were attempting to have the best annual along with the best class ever. EDITOR'S MESSAGE We encountered many obstacles. And along with my being lazy, we d'idn't exactly have a million dollar budget. And now that we've completed our task. . . You know, imaginaition, creativity, et cetera. I 2s. iI' lla. W , N i WI! People often ask what will I profit from working on this annuial. And after I think about it, I usually reply, Oh . . . clean, wholesome fun. . . . I think l'II finish my lunch, -.L 1'k fra- , 'pimp W .. The first graduation exercise was held in June, l963, at which time one hundred and thirty-nine seniors, of the one thousand three hundred and fifty students, received diplomas. Now it is l968. Mr. Charleston is still principal but there are sixty-three teachers and a student body of fourteen hundred and forty-nine. Included in this number are two hundred and thirteen graduating seniors. Carver also has a Guidance Center with three certified counselors and a very efficient R.O.T.C. Unit. Carver remains an excellent institution for secon- dary education, and we are proud of our many accomplish- ments and look forward to the future with confidence and courage. For no one knows better than the high school senior, who has gradually discovered that the dreams he has held for four years has become a reality. To a few, it is a medal of honor and courage: to most, it is a matter of awakening to face responsibility maturelyg yet, to us it is just a normal beginning. The common ingredients are courage and purpose. Each senior- man of tomorrow, leader of tomorrow, parent of tomorrow, follower of yesterday and world-maker of the future stands at the threshold of his future. Whether he grasps the future securely will be determined by how well he has helped himself through preparation and organiza- tion of his own facilites. It is a monumental achievement for he is on his feet nowg just learned to walk, but ready and able to enhance a society that has long advanced from the horse-and-buggy pace to a jet-propulsion whip. For the senior, high school has served as a home away from home, an institution for education, a counseling agency, a charm school and a place to grow and to learn the importance of seeking more knowl- edgeg therefore, I beseech you, to seek. Now that it is over, what then is your goal? Nothing happens, and no forward steps are taken until a goal is established. Without goals, individuals just wander through life. They stumble along, never knowing where they are going, so they never get anywhere. Goals are' essential to success, just as air is essential to life. No one ever stumbles into successwithout a goal. No one lives without air. One write has said that a goal is an objective, a purpose. Th ere may be as many goals as there are members of this class. In spite of what your goal may be, we are expecting each one of you to be successful. I am sure you will agree that success means many wonderful, positive things. Success means personal prosperity, a good job, a fine home, vacations, travel, new things, and financial security, success means winning. Above all, it means achieving. Every human being wants success. Everybody wants the best this life can deliver. Nobody enjoys crawling or living in mediocrity. No one likes feeling second class. One's belief plays an important part in his success also. Some of the most practical success building wisdom is found in the Biblical quotation which states that, Faith can move mountains . If one believes he can move mountains, he can. Not many people believe they can move mountains, as a result, not many people do. The song, Any One Can Move Mountains , should give you self confidence and above all, belief. There is nothing magical or mystical about the power of belief. It generates power, skill, and energy to do or to achieve. When one believes he can do, the how to do developes. Everyday throughout our nation young high school graduates like you either enter college, continue their training in some vocational school, or seek gainful employment. They wish all the time that someday they will enjoy the success that goes with reaching the top. On the other hand, there are some who don't have the belief it takes to reach the top, and they become a failure and a liability to security. As members of the 1968 Class of Carver High School, we hope you are blessed with the belief which will enable you to go to the top and to become a credit to your school, your nation, and your world. Your parents, teachers, Board of Education, and citizens have all sacrificed, planned, and worked diligently in order that you may reach the important point where you will be able to graduate from high school. Whether you choose to continue your education in college, vocational school, or whether you are satisfied with a high school diploma, your future now is more or less in your own hands. We hope, however, that you will not stop here. News media and other sources inform us daily that there is a record demand for top level people in every field. lndustry and professions are calling for people who are prepared. You are living in an age of opportunity. Those who convert opportunity into reward will be those wise people who learn how to think themselves to success. The door to success is open wider today than ever before. My advice to you is to walk in. You will not find it difficult to walk in if you will believe in yourself and believe you can succeed. There really is, as the saying goes, plenty of room at the top. As one executive explained, there are many almost qualified people, but there is one success ingredient often missing. This ingredient is the ability to get things done, to get results. Always remember that the important thing is not where you were or where you are today, but where you want to go tomorrow. We the Senior Class will always remember . . . lim these many, many moods of Mr. S. P. Charleston L1AL -- ff7i- - Ti 1 i Y 1 ' ii. lg A I ' Q I I DR. FRED KIRBY MR.
