At its best, this volume can present only a few glimpses of this passing panorama . . . some of the personalities . . . some of the scholastic endeavors as well as some of the social activities. Since some of these events and vicarious experiences will fade from our memory, let us slowly turn the pages of this picturesque record and reminisce. They also come back to us . . . the old friends, our favorite instructors, the scenes we once knew, and the dreams and memories of days gone by. It is with these in mind that we present the Tigonian of nineteen hundred and sixty-three. kffg: I Kg -g l' ' N - 'L, 44 . L ': - . ff J wr, Q 1 ' T 41 . r 1 . , ,- -s L , 4 Pi..: ' 1 ' S ,. History of Carver High School ' Carver Junior High School, designed to develop into the second senior high school of Muscogee County, was opened in the fall of l954. The school was erected to meet the needs of Carver Heights, Wynnton, and other out- lying communities. The physical plant, modern in every respect and housing during its first year seventh and eighth grade pupils, was designed for future expansion. Plans for growth include the building of an auditorium and the erection of additional classrooms. ln l96l twenty-four classrooms were added, making a total of forty classrooms, a gymnatorium, cafeteria, library, and administra- tive offices. With Mr. S. P. Charleston serving as principal and a staff of fourteen teach- ers, a secretary, and a student body of three hundred seventy-nine pupils, Carver Junior High School opened for its first session on September 6, l954. The first faculty consisted of the following teachers: Mrs. Sadie B. Alexander, Mrs. Marian P. Armstrong, Mrs. Helen L. Burnett, Mrs. Anna M. Debro, Mr. Booker T. Fowlkes, Mrs. Theresa S. Harris, Mrs. Evelyn M. Jenkins, Mrs. Janet R. Johnson, Mr. John T. Little, Miss Elmira A. Parker, Miss Fannie L. Phillips, Mrs. Rosa S. Stanback, Mrs. Pongee B. Threatt, Miss Marguerite M. Watt, and secretary, Miss Dorothy I.. Williams. Each teacher, holding a college degree, insured the type of program that would meet the needs of each pupil. Other integral portions of the personnel of the school were the cafeteria and janitorial staffs. As aids toward attaining the goals set up, the school adopted a philosophy and a set of objectives. The curriculum was designed to meet the needs of each student, in addition, a variety of organizations contributed to the growth of each student. ln an effort to create a closer relationship between the home and the school, a Parent-Teacher Association was organized. Since the school was designed to become a high school, the ninth grade was added in l955, the tenth grade in l96O, the eleventh grade in l96l, and the twelfth grade in l962. From its birth, the school was accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Association each year, and in l962 when the twelfth grade was added, the school became accredited by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges, thus enabling its graduates to enroll in leading colleges and uni- versities without being subjected to a high-school validation examination. The year i963 not only marks our first graduating class but also the first year of our participation in the Georgia lnterscholastic Association. ln the GIA, as well as in county and regional activities, the school has received many awards and citations in the areas of Athletics and Fine Arts. Carver High School has also become renowned for its academic programs. Carver is not only proud of its first graduating class, it is equally proud of the students who were eighth grade pupils when Carver first opened its doors in l954 and who are now seniors in colleges throughout the United States. These students include: William Griffin, Pearline Cox, Barbara Hall, Vivian Solomon, George Adams, Willie Buckner, Freddye Jones, and Hattie Watson. Carver High School's present faculty of fifty-two teachers and student body of one thousand three hundred forty-nine students realize that many possibilities lie ahead as the program expands to meet the needs of its pupils, the community, and the world. CHARLESTON Principal A.B., Morris Brown College M.Ed, Atlanta University, Further Study Columbia Univ. 81 Chicago Univ 'I y L THE PRINCIPALS MESSAGE May, 1963 It is with genuine pride and pleasure that we present to our many friends the Tigonian, the 1963 Annual published, by the students of the Carver High School. The Tigonian is a record of activities of our school and represents experience in journalism, advertising, salesmanship, finance and business. Without such experiences the production of this annual would not have been possible. lmbeddedf between the covers of this our first annual are immeasurable episodes we hope will interest, inspire and acquaint you with the program of our school. I want to commend our Seniors and the student body for undertaking such a worthwhile and challenging task. Special citation and recognition must be given to members of the annual staff and advisors for completing this project while carrying on their regular' academic program. The transition of Carver from a junior high in 1954 with an enrollment of 379 students and 15 teachers to 1345 students and 54 teachers in 1963 has been interesting and unusually outstanding. This period has been vitally important to our students and especially our seniors who have been preparing themselves for responsibilities they must assume in the years ahead. Many individuals, groups and organizations have been most helpful to us in making this phenomenal stride. We point with pride to the close relationship between the homes, the churches, and our school. Our Parent Teacher Association has been continuously at our side for nine years, assisting as financially and morally. We are grateful to the Superintendent of Education, his staff, the Board of Edu- cation and many community agencies for taking care of many of our needs. The class of 1963 has the distinction of being the first to graduate from Carver. Since you are the first, you will have the distinct honor of being the first to make a name for yourself and your school. It is our hope that you will not only attain high standards of achievement for yourself, but will set higher standards of performance for those who come after you. ln this way you will bring praise and recognition to your school. Many of you have made worthwhile contributions while here. It is my hope that these contributions will serve as a challenge td you to ever hold high the standards of Dear Old Carver and help it to become a stronger and better institution. Since this is our first annual, we trust it will reflect the love, the hope, the aspira- tion, inspiration and devotion of our parents, students, teachers, and friends. As the members of the class of 1963 prepare to take leave, it is our hope that you will look back on years spent at Carver with a sense of dignity, pleasure and profit. We therefore congratulate you upon the completion of your work and wish for you success in your future endeavors. S. P. CHARLESTON Principal 3 MISS ELMIRA PARKER MR JOHN M. Slag Smith is indeed deserving of this honor. She has not only served efficiently and with dignity for one year as State president of the Slag Organization, but also has she rendered for a number of years Cduring her elementary and big: school daysl invaluable and praisewortlv service to her local and regional Slag organization. The Slags of Georgia, both students and librarians will long remember Slag Smith for her affable and amiable personality, her persuasive and thrill- ing ability as an orator, the smoothness and dignity as she pre- sided at the meetings and a number of desirable characteristics and qualities much to be emulated by those Slags who follow. It is with a great deal of pride and admiration that we award this Book Scholarship to her. We wish for her continued success as she drinks deeper, for as Alexander Pope has said, A little learning is a dangerous thing, Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: There shallows dranghts intoziicate the brain, And drinking largely sobers us again. 1 ,, Sincerely, h - gf, V,buK! ffx .f are I ilg0i24f CMissJ If' gfaret L.' alker I, State Library Consultant State Department of Education A f H141 I f,jf ' Q MU ALPHA THETA Charter members of the Carver High Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club. A level of understanding and performance suited to the widely divergent range of individuals who make up the student body is represented in the teaching of English. In addition to the standard courses, there are such enrichment of offerings as classes in Drama, Speech, and Creative Writing. The pattern of reading and exploring ideas taught in the English Department will last through life, Proper knowledge of English and its uses are essential keys to the understand- ing of every subject in the school. It is with a recognition of this position of key im- portance that the English Department attempts to provide the best possible training for each student. THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT 7'- imma' . W f , .., .-at Senior students in government learn how a bill becomes a law. lt is through the social sciences that children and youth have opportunities to learn about the fundamental attitudes, beliefs, and institutions of our society and those which char- acterize lite in other regions ot our world. Young citizens need to know and understand the nature of our civilization and be encouraged to discover ways in which they can contribute to its further development, Therefore, the most inclusive aim of the Social Studies Depart- ment, as a part of general education at Carver High, is to help young people learn to carry cn the free society that they have inherited, to make whatever changes modern conditions demand or creative imagination suggests that are consistent with its basic principles and values. To accomplish this aim, courses in Civics, Georgia History, World History, Sociology, Psychology, United States History, Economics, Government and World Geography are of- tered.
