Carver was unable to get anything started with every drive ending on third dow n plays. West find was able to capitalize on Carver’s mistakes which led to a 21-0 victory for the Lions. West End dominated the first quarter and scored first With the score 6-0 and only 1:04 left in the half, the Lions were able to score on a 10 yard pass, and capped it with a 2 point conversion. The Score stood 14-0 at halftime. The Carver defense came out strong in the second half but the offense still was unable to score. The Lions put the final points on the board late in the third quarter on a 14 yard run. The extra point w as good. The outstanding Ram for the game was Willie Young who punted six times for a 40.3 average. Rams Upend Herd In the second game of the year, the Rams got into winning ways by upending Parker 7-6. Parker earned its points by capping a 69 yard, eight play drive with a stunning touchdown run from 4 yards out. With Carver defender Ronald Perryman hanging onto both legs. Parker’s quarterback still managed in desperation to pitch the ball to a Parker run-ningback who hauled it over for the game’s first points. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were mostly a defensive battle. In the 4th quarter. Carver got a golden opportunity to score when big sophomore Carl Gordon fell on a Parker fumble at Parker’s 36 yard line. The Rams offense took over and quarterback Kinnic Morris passed to split end Lester Young at the 15 yard line. Young turned goalward and ran the ball in for the score. The game was tied 6-6. With the kicking ability of sophomore Stanley Young, the extra point was good. The Rams now had the lead 7-6. Parker made a desperate effort to come back, but lime ran out and the Rams had come up with a stunning 7-6 victory. 92 Vikings Sail Pass Rams It was an unfortunate night for Ram fans. The fans received their first disappointment when the Rams received the opening kickoff and returned it to the Huffman 10. However, the run was called hack on a penalty. Undaunted, just two plays later the Rams Johnny Green dashed 70 yards on an end-around play that fooled the whole Viking defense. The result was a Carver touchdown. Stanley Young kicked the extra point giving Carver the lead 7-0 early in the 1st quarter. Following the kickoff, the Vikings drove the ball 65 yards for a touchdown. The score was tied 7-7. In the second quarter Huffman again drove down the field scoring another touchdown. The ncvcr-givc-up Rams started their own second drive down the field ending when quarterback Kinmc Morns hit split end Tester Young in the end zone on a five yard pass. The PAT fell short giving the Vikings a 14-13 halftime lead. During the 3rd and 4th quarters the Rams defense held lough but couldn’t seem to stop the Viking offense. The final score was Huffman 28 and Carver 13 in a very hard fought game. 93 Rams Lasso Mustangs It was a muddy night for the Rams, hut the Rams were able to pull off a victory from the Mustangs. I he first touchdown of the evening came on a 40 yard Kinnie Morris to Stanley Young strike early in the first quarter. The point after attempt was missed and the score stood 6-0. Jackson-Olin came hack and tied the game at 6-6 midway in the second quarter. Just before halftime, the Rams fumbled a punt snap in the end zone for a 2 point safety which gave the Mustangs an 8-6 halftime lead. During the third quarter both teams battled in the rainy weather. Finally, the Rams out battled the Mustangs late in the 4th quarter when Gary Taylor scored from the one yard line to give the Rams the go-ahead lead. On the next kickoff, the Mustangs took the ball and drove down the field, only to be stopped on a 4th down play. The Rams took the ball over on the 20 yard line and with the running of tailback Johnny Debardlabon. the Rams drove down field, running the time out. A 12-8 victory was insured. 94 Colonels Survive Ram Rally A fired up Ram squad took the field against the Woodlawn Colonels. Taking the opening kickoff, the Colonels battled against the defense of the determined Rams driving 54 yards in 12 hard-earned plays for a touchdown. The extra point was wide and Wood-lawn led 6-0 in the first quarter. It was a defensive battle for the rest of the half when neither team could score. I-ate in the second quarter. Carver threatened after a Woodlawn fumble. Quarterback Kinnie Morris connected on passes to Lester Young and Johnny Green to get to the 14 yard line. But the drive died at the six when a 4th down pass fell incomplete. Woodlawn drove to the 32 yard line early in the third quarter, but Carver’s Floyd Lawson intercepted to end the Colonel’s hopes. Woodlawn scored in the 4th quarter when the Colonel’s quarterback hit his split end in the end zone for the score. The two point conversion was good. Bad luck struck on a big Woodlawn defensive play as the Rams had a punt blocked. The defensive back fell on the ball in the end zone and the score was 20-0. Carver came charging back on the passing of Kinnie Morris to light up the scoreboard. Morris hit Johnny Green from the 10 yard line for the touchdown. Lester Young then passed to Stanley Young for the two point conversion. With 2:21 left in the game. Woodlawn recovered an onsidc kick and ran out the clock ending the game with the score 20-8. 95 Rams Scalp Raiders Ihe Rams bounced back for another win when they defeated the Red Raider of Phillips High, knocking them out in a complete shut out. The Rams offense got off to a slow start, but the defense made up for it. stopping Phillips on a golden opportunity of scoring. The Rams stopped Phillips four straight times inside the ten yard line. Carver was unable to score in the first half. Carver took the second half kickoff and drove 105 yards, including penalities. for the first touchdown. Quarterback Kinnic Morris passed to Willie Young from 5 yards out for the points and Stanley Young kicked the extra point. The final touchdown came with time running out. Morris hit Willie Young again for a 14 yard gainer, then Perryman ran for 15 yards. The final two yards came on a Perryman run. Stanley Young kicked the final point ending the game 14-0. 96 Rams Foil the Pacesetters It was a night of questionable calls against the Rams when they fell victim to the Hayes Pacesetters by a score of 7-6. This was truly a night to remember when the two great rivalries clashed, both teams displaying great defensive effort. Carver began the scoring late in the second quarter, starting with a drive at the Hayes 39 yard line. The first big play was when quarterback Kenny Morns hit tightend Johnny Green on a third and six situation. On the next play Morris again hit Green with a 17 yard pass. Randall Perryman then gained a yard to give Carver a second and goal at the Hayes one. Then on the next play a quarterback sneak was fumbled, but tightend Johnny Green picked up the loose ball and scored giving the Rams a 6-0 halftime lead. The third quarter was a defensive battle, neither team scoring until the fourth quarter when Hayes quarterback hit his wide receiver on a nine yard pass in the end zone. The referees disagreed on the call but Hayes was awarded the touchdown. The score stood 6-6 until Hayes kicked the extra point. With 6:32 left in the fourth quarter. Morris connected with Green who caught the ball along the Hayes sideline running down several yards and then cutting back to his right and went into the end zone. However the ball was called back on another questionable call ruling that he had stepped out of bounds. W'lth time running out. Carver was unable to move the ball. The game ended with the score Hayes 7 and Carver 6. The game was later reversed after a review of the game films and Carver was awarded the victory. 97 Jets Zoom Past Rams The Rams seemed mistake prone on this Fridas night game when they fell victim to the Banks Jets. The Rams offense did not seem to get a handle on the ball. Early in the first quarter the Rams got off a bad snap from center, which set Banks up for their first score on the next series of downs. Then later in the first quarter Carver again fumbled and Banks went in to score from the Rams 15 yard line. The defense held tough but to no avail as the Jets offense overcame the Rams. They drove 58 yards for their final touchdown. The Ram offense only got a small amount of yardage with the running of tailbacks Johnny Dcbardlabon and Michael Bray. The final score was Banks 23 and Carver 0. Cavaliers Escape the Rams It was the end of the season for the Rams when they came up against the Cavaliers of John Carroll. The Ram defense got off to a good start by only allowing the Cavaliers three downs before having to punt. Afterwards, the Rams offense began to work with a drive from their own 45 yard line to go on to score when quarterback Kinnie Morris passed 15 yards to split-end l.estcr Young. The extra point attempt failed, and the Rams led 6-0 in the first quarter. During the second quarter there was a defensive battle between both teams, but the Cavaliers managed to get a drive going. They advanced down the field to score. The extra point was good and they led 7-6 at the half. In the second half the Rams took the kickoff, but could not seem to ground out any yardage against the strong defense of the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers took over the ball and drove for two more scores making the score 21-6. In the final minutes of the game, the Rams linebacker Johnny Green picked up a Cavalier fumble and raced 85 yards for a Carver score. They started the season winning the Urban League Tournament. The Rams ran through their opponents on the way to winning the Magic City Tournament in December. Derrick Bentley received the most valuable player award in both tournaments. Alvin Mump-herd and Eric Richardson were all-tournament players in both events. The Rams went on to win 17 straight before a loss. They arc ranked No. 1 in the state.
