IN MEMORIAM JOHN A. HARP, JR. Born-January 28, l909 Died-January 4, i957 Memory is one of our most precious possessions. lt is a library filled with priceless volumes of our lives. Each of us at Carthage High School has one volume that is gold embossed and holds the treasured memories of an understanding heart, a friendly smile, a pair of merry eyes and an all abiding faith in young people. Mr. Harp can never completely leave us. He ioined us freely, gaily in our play, he consulted with us seriously in our personal problems, he never laughed at us, but was always ready to laugh with us. He advised us carefully in our edu- cational problems. His guidance and wisdom will always influence our lives. As we mature and age and gain in life experiences we will understand even more how much his high moral principles, his Christian ideals, his scholarly concepts of education, and his love for all young people have influenced our lives. Mr. Harp was teacher, counselor, guide, and advisor, but most of all we are proudly happy that every student could call him Friend. Go with God, Mr. Harp, your volume will never be closed in our library of memories. ELLA CALHOON ,, l' ll ,l' M 3 LESTER GILLMAN Superintendent of Carthage Schools Congratulations to the student body of Carthage High School on a very successful year in both curricular and extracurricular activities. This yearbook, a result of good work by the annual staff, is an outstanding example of work throughout the school. It is interesting to note that the annual points out the improvements in facilities and services in the past year. More improvements will be made during the coming year. lt seems that a superintendent spends most of his time on the B's-buildings, bonds, blueprints, budgets, bids, bills, buses, and boundary lines. All this is neces- sary, however, since it is a well-known fact that good facilities and services result in an improved learning situation. And that is the real function of any school. f gm. , I Jlifgwkk , K ,wfwffk wwf. 1 535 vf,Q.51a5gf ffisiilm 2219-M? krm , ,iifwzl I - Or , k 52,2551 , Q Q 1755, A, xL: fy vm. gaze-1 gg 4, fi f A5153- N, ,,,,,, A,Xv,,. STUDENT COUNCIL This year, as always, the Student Council has had a wonderful year under the capable sponsorship of Mrs. Christine Webster and the leadership of our president, Gary C. Smith. The members of the council have made every effort to fulfill their purpose, which is to establish student initiative, leadership, and democracy, to promote the general welfare of the students and to stimulate school spirit, to arouse good fellowship among the students, faculty, and community, to create a whole- some interest in all activities of the school and community, and to create and main- tain standards of good citizenship among students. During the year the Student Council had many, many, activities. The council was in charge of all ticket sales at all home football and basketball games and one bas- ketball tournament. This year the council began keeping a decoration in the new cafeteria. The council also handles the sale of pencils. Other activities include as- sisting with College Night, Parents' Night and Career Night, sponsoring the Safe- Teen Club, decorating the school for Christmas, entering a float in the Homecoming Parade, and we hope to take part in the school carnival. The council also has given donations to several charitable organizations including the United Funds, March of Dimes and Cerebral Palsy. The Student Council of T957 is very proud of its record and the student body it represents. OFFICERS President ...,., .....,.. G ARY CLEVELAND SMITH Vice President .... ..............,,... Thespians have been very active during the 1956-57 school year. The first meeting of the year was a wiener roast in Carter's Park. After this we worked hard to present the Senior class play, Dino, which was very successful. The formal initiation and banquet of Thespians was held the early part of December. Then came the all school play, By Hex, which meant a lot more work but also turned out very successful. ln the spring regular meetings were held and a ioint meeting was held in April with the Nevada Troupe. The year ended with our informal initiation at a spring picnic. Any student enrolled in one or more business subiects may become a member by meeting the require- ments ofthe Carthage Chapter. F.B.L.A. helps prepare young men and women for leadership and serves effec- tively in bringing the interests of students together to deal with National problems, community improvement, vocational preparation, and better relationships with local, state and National business groups interested in the welfare of youth. In September, 1953, the Carthage Chapter of F.B.L.A. was organized. Since then proiects of merit completed and sponsored by the group include the compiling and editing of the first handbook for students used in Carthage High School, the purchase of a four-speed record player for the business department, contribution to the National F.B.L.A. fund to furnish an F.B.L.A. office in the United Nations building, courtesy proiects, bulletin board displays and assembly programs. Our organization is financed by the payment of membership dues and funds earned from Chapter proiects. Our outstanding obiective for this year was the revision of the student handbook for our Principal, Mr. Metz Cherry. Miss Arga- bright, Head of Business Department, and Mr. Blase and Miss Owens, Instructors, are our sponsors. C 2 l 1 P V- U15 1 ,fn ' r WIA '7 10, M X 4' nt ill -b w 4 . The club is open to all girls who will accept the principles and responsibilities of the club. Meetings are held the first and third weeks of each school month, with the sponsor, Miss Leta Hedge.
