DEDIICATJIQ 50 Years of Progress For Our School -I I I' In the beginning-for every bit of authentic history must have a beginning, there was a building known as the Central School , which did duty from the year 1870 to 1903. At this time the overflow of students was evident. The board of education and the superintendent, Mr. G. M. Holiday, had the interest of the school very much at heart. They realized that affairs had reached a climax and steps had to be taken. A resolution was passed favoring a proposition for 875,000 bonds for a new High School building, to be voted on at the school election April 7, 1903. On July 1, 1904, work was actually begun. Thus began fifty years of pro- gress. Down through the years the leaders of our school system have never taken their eye off their goal, which is better education under better con- ditions. It is true that after we feel, how dear to my heart are the scene of my childhood and regretfully make advancements. Still we look forward with eager anticipation. Today the Carthage High School stands perfect in harmony and proportion, simple, but mass- ive and imposingg a monument of Classic Art, symbolical of the culture of Carthage, and the triumph of those connected with its plan and erec- tion. But the best is yet to come, new heights remained to be reached, our goal is still in the distance as it inevitability shall be. Progress does not stand still. It is unceasingly in effect. Today, as in the past, we are strid- ing upward and onward. The heart of each and every student overflows with gratitude to our faculty and to the citizens of Carthage. To those who have aided in giving us such splendid advantages for higher education we do humbly dedicate the Carthaginian of 1955-56. WG!! M SM Past-The Old Carthage High School . . . The members of the council have made every effort to fulfill their purpose, which is to establish student initiative, leadership, and democracyg to pro- mote the general welfare of the students and to stimulate school spiritg to arouse good fellowship among the students, faculty, and communityg to create a wholesome interest in all activities of the school and communityg and to create and maintain standards of good citizenship among students. During the year the Student Council had many, many activities. The council was in charge of all ticket sales at all home football and basketball games and one basket- ball tournament. This year the council began the sale of milk to the student body. All money from this venture will go into the fund for buying a new curtain for the stage. The council also handles the sale of pencils and workbooks. Other activities include: assisting with College Night, Parent's Night and Career Night, sponsored the Safe-Teen Club: decorated the school for Christmas, entered a prize-winning float in the Home-coming Parade: and we hope to take part in the school carnival. The council also has given donations to several charitable organizations including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, March of Dimes, and Cerebral Palsy. Early in the year Council representatives attended the annual convention of the Southwest Missouri Federation of Student Councils. The convention was very helpful in obtaining worthwhile suggestions from the discussion groups representing the stu- dent organizations from all over this section of the state. The Student Council of 1956 is very proud of its record and the student body it represents. OFFICERS President ....,,.,.,...., .............,..........,,.......,..,.. ....... R oger Adams -III- A lone figure slowly walks through the now deserted hall of high school. Its a senior taking a last look around before bidding a final farewell to C. H. S. He pauses and thinks, of the day, only four short years ago when he first entered the doors, a green freshman. Its been a wonderful four years he thinks to himself as he remembers the sports, parties, studies, clubs, speech activities and plays. We've had a tremendous class and there have been some changes made be- cause of our group. The teachers will long remember us not only for our mischief but for our scholastic ability as well. This has been the busiest year, of course, and perhaps our biggest one also. We really gave tradition a jolt when we elected a girl to be our student council president, then there was the cerebral palsy drive, for which the seniors as a class collected 3360. We produced a highly successful senior play and an equally well received senior assembly. Yes, these have been the golden days ..... The figure snaps from his day-dream and starts toward the gym where Pomp and Circumstancen is playing, so with a few backward glances and a moist eye for the memories, the senior departs for college or parts unknown. We have left all of our baby tricks, wide eyes, and oh, looky there behind us as Freshmen. This class of '58 soon found an able president in Sue Hargis. She has had a very capable staff to help her all through this year. Since our entrance into Carthage High School, our class of 1958 has taken an active part in all school affairs. We have had sta r athletes ta redhead for tradition, of coursol, nightingales, and social-lites galore. Many very brilliant classes have come and gone, but this class gives very marked promises of being the most brilliant, enthusiastic, loyal class ever known to C. H. S. We are all looking forward to being Juniors with all the thrills and new things that next year will bring. --The Sophomore Class V I I BACK ROW: Dale Walker, Tom Hamilton, Steve Ralston. This famous statement is the motto of the National Thespian Society, an organization for the furtherance of the dramatic art in secondary schools. The group is comprised of students who have participated in suffi- cient speech and dramatic activities in school and community to gain 10 points, which is the requirement for membership. Durng the 1955-1956 school year Thespians have been quite active. We started the year with a formal banquet which served as initiation for the new pledges. Following this we decided to shift our meeting time and gather once each month in the evening for a pot-luck supper. Immediately after this many of us struggled with the float which was entered quite successfully in the home-coming parade. By the middle of February every member of our society was hard at work tand we do mean workl producing the all school play Annie Get Your Gun which was a smash hit, playing to standing room only both nights. There was a short slack season throughout March but work resumed again in April with the senior play and finally ended with the informal initiation held at our annual spring picnic. 85 RLTRURIANS BACK ROW: Uarolya Valley, Delores Bryan. During the course of the year we contributed over 3200 to such charities as the March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy, Salvation Army, Big Brothers. Care, and the Y.M.C.A. These donations were made possible by the proceeds from our annual Tag Day hold in the early part of the school year. The social part of our activities included the annual Tri-Club coke party, our in- formal initiation in the form of a Wiener roast, the formal initiation and installation of officers held at a banquet at the Broadvew Country Club, and various other forms of constructive entertainment. lst Semester OFFICERS Sharon Grosshart ,... ...... Miss Westfall, Sponsor ARISTONIANS The Aristonians completed a most successful year during 1955-1956. Most of the fifty-six members met every two weeks with their new sponsor, Miss Helen Westfall. Our social year was begun with the annual Tri-Club coke party, which was held for a change in the wide-open spaces of Central Park. There were many activities to keep us busy-we collected for the annual heart fund drive: then there was the mother-daughter banquet, helping with the spring Tri-Club dance, worrying about the float we en- tered in the Home-Coming parade and threatening the digestion of the entire school by selling homemade popcorn balls at all the home games: of course we can't for rather the pledges can'tJ forget the informal initia- tion at the first of the year. It was lots of fun and everyone turned out to be a good sport about the activities. All in all it's really been fun. We seniors will miss all the excite- ment, but the undergraduates will be back with you again next year. 87 OLYMPIIIN LITERARY SOCIETY 4 ln 4 BACK ROW: Judy VVinn, Connie Maxwell, Freda Berner, Barbara Dodson. This organization is designed for both high school and college students, and is affiliated with the United Business Education Association, a depart- ment of the National Education Association. The FBLA helps to prepare young men and women for leadership and prepares youth to assume adult responsibilities in adult organizations. It serves as an effective means of bringing the interest of students together to deal with National problems, community improvement, vocational preparation and better relationships with local, state and National groups interested in the welfare of youth, The Carthage Chapter of FBLA was organized in September, 1953, with thirty- eight charter members. Any student enrolled in one or more business subjects that meets the requirements outlined in the local chapter constitution is eligible for mem- bership, The present Chapter consists of thirty-two young men and women. The third Wednesday of each month is the regular meeting date as specified in the constitution. Money-making and service projects including a talent show sponsored by the FBLA this year have been successful. Miss Hazel Argabright, Head of the Business Depart- ment, and Miss Edith Owens and Mrs, Rita Sullivan, who replaced Miss Mary Anne Rice when she resigned, are the sponsors. Our school paper, Tiger Tales, was established in 1935. At that time it was a mime- ographed copy, but for the past five years it has been printed. This adds much to the appearance of the copy. The paper is printed monthly and the last issue is al' ways dedicated to the seniors. It is necessary that our publication be self-supporting. Our business managers work earnestly to make the paper sales pay all bills. However, the staff sponsored the sale of yearly subscriptions this past fall as a project for more income. The editors have worked untiringly to improve the content of the paper and to print the items students enjoy reading. Regardless of the hours of work that have gone into the making ot each month'5 edition of Tiger Tales, the staff has enjoyed a happy and successful year. Our Club was organized under the leadership of the Student Council. Its purpose is to promote safe driving among all high school students. To become a member, it is necessary to have your car safety checked. Then you are eligible for a car strip and membership card. If you are arrested for violating the law, your membership in the Club is suspended. One of our first projects was to have a Safe Teen Driver of the week with the help of the City Police and the State Patrol. The patrolmen picked the student that had practiced safe driving during the preceding week. Shirley Cooly. OFFICERS First President .............,,,,,.,,e,,,,,,..,..,,.,,,,.... ........
