Proceeds of Henrietta the Eighth were used in entertaining the Seniors at the annual Junior-Senior prom that was held in May. The Junior class presented the assembly program on February 25, in the form of a radio broadcast. With next year in mind, we continue our activities so that we may complete our years in C. H. The first Hi-Y club was organized about 1910 and there has been a club each year since. Our motto is Clean Speech, Clean Living, Clean Sportsmanship, and Clean Scholarship. The club of Carthage High School meets every Tuesday at the noon hour at the Y.M.C.A. building for lunch and an inspirational talk by the sponsor or other speakers. Christine Webster This year, as always, the Student Council has made every possible effort to carry out its purpose-to develop student initiative, leadership, and democracy, to promote the general welfare of the students, to stimu- late school spirit, to arouse good fellowship among the students, to encour- age close cooperation between students, faculty, and community, to create a wholesome interest in all the activities of the school and community, and to create and maintain standards of good citizenship among students. In true '49'er fashion the Student Council has been very busy and industrious this year. This year was launched with a huge magazine sales campaign which netted enough to help pay for the inter-communication system and to start a fund for a more extensive visual education plan. The council backed the F.F.A. Barnwarmin', sent delegates to the District Student Council Convention at Springfield, Missouri, and to the National Convention at Trenton, Missouri, sold 37,800 worth of tickets for the basketball. and football games, and sponsored the March of Dimes, the Salvation Army, the Christmas and Easter seal campaigns, and the Red Cross. The Student Council is proud of its record this year, but it is especial- ly proud of you, the student body it represented during 1948 and 1949. Fourteen Seniors trod the boards April 7 and 8, representing the class of '49 in this comedy of matrimonial dilemmas. Mrs. Gyurkovics was the mother who was bound by convention to marry off her daughters in the order of their ages. Mitzi was the fourth daughter who complicated matters by getting herself expelled from school and so was reduced to the age of 15 from 18. This allowed her three older sisters, Katinka, Sari and Ella to devise methods for exacting proposals from Colonel Radviany, Michael Sandorffy, and Gida Radviany, Ferenz Horkay was the gallant lieutenant who came to Mitzi's aid by helping to marry the older sisters and thereby freed Mitzi herself from the nursery-and incidentally won her hand. Terka, Liza, Klara, Toni Teleki and J anko carried the remainder of the part in the comedy, serving to thicken the plot and advance the intrigue. y Debate Team The Junior Class Play Henrietta The Eighth Wilma Sutton ,........ ...... The chapter has prospered through its various money making activi- ties and now owns a truck, trailer, 50-gallon power sprayer, electric Bab- cock tester, motion picture projector with speaker attachment, complete soil testing laboratory, farm shop equipment, an adequate agricultural library, complete set of surveying equipinozit, and pressure paint gun. The chapter upheld its reputation by winning several contests last year. The chapter was victorious both in the sub-district and the district contests in Parliamentary Procedure, Public Speaking, Radio Skit, and consequently represented the district in the State Contest in Columbia. One member of the chapter won The Carthage Evening Press contest for Jasper County. Another member won the Ayrshire judging contest in Hutchinson, Kansas. The F.F.A. basketball team won second in the Tri- county tournament. Other highlights were the Parent and Son Banquet and the all-school Barnwarmin'. We participated in livestock shows of this district. Our chapter cooperated in the livestock pest control program and the wild life conservation program. We also built equipment for the Poultry Improvement Day, which was held in the Memorial Hall. There are now three classes of Veterans enrolled in Farm Training.
