H. S., and it will be found that the members of the class have contributed to almost all the school's activities of the past years. Many of the seniors have participated in sports such as football, bas- ketball, tennis and golf, in debate and dramatics, in musical departments and in the school publications. On Thursday, November 7, the class held a Barn Party at the coun- try home of Emma Hain. The senior class play, The Life of the Party, by Marrijane and Joseph Hayes, was presented on Tuesday, April 15. Proceeds were used to purchase a class memorial for the school. An assembly was presented by the class of '47 as an annual affair. The senior class sponsors were Miss Halliburton, Mrs. Moler and Mr. Richards Page 14 4...-Al. This famous class proudly entered C. ll. S. as Juniors with the same spirit we had as we started. This year members of our class have succeeded in gaining honors in various fields-debating, oratorical contests, music, football, basketball, and other athletic events. Our class play, Cross My Heart, was one of the most successful ever produced on our cherished C. H. S. stage and will be remembered by everyone who saw it. With next year in mind, we continue our activities so that we may complete our years in C. H. S. and go out into the world aiming to make C. H. S. proud of us. The president, elected by the student body, stands ready to serve the students, faculty, and school at all time. He presides at all assemblies and is alert to all projects and proposals which will contribute to the betterment and prolgress of our school. The representatives from each section work in close cooperation with the student body, making regular reports, and considering all suggestions and requests made by the students. The Student Council has taken advantage of every opportunity to promote the general welfare of the students and to arouse school spirit. They have had charge of the ticket sales for all the football :mo basketball games. 'Ihey have sponsored an active campaign toward the singing of The Alma Mater in assembly and pep meetings. The Student Council has worked to promote good fellowship among the students and close cooperation between the students, faculty, and community to create a wholesome interest in all activities of the school and community.. This year the council became a member of the Southwest Missouri Federation of Student Coun- cils. Delegates were sent to Springfield for the sixth annual meeting, and several interesting and worthwhile suggestions were gained from the discussion groups representing the student organizations from all over this part of the state. The Student Council has worked to create and maintain standards of good citizenship among the students. 'lthey have launched active drives and have col- lected contributions from the studs-nts for the March of Dimes and for the Crippled Children's Drive. They have made donations to the Community Chest and Red Cross. With these characteristics in mind-scholarship, service, leadership, and char-. acter-the faculty votes on prospective members from students in the upper third of their class. The number of members shall not exceed fifteen per cent of the senior class and five per cent of the junior class. New members are initiated with a beautiful and impressive ceremony given in the spring before student body, faculty, and friends. Barbara VIISS MAY HUKILL Page 76 1 1 f f ljfrufy ry, ffl' J -afar! .flifwflfy f I The first Public School Library was established in 1872 or 18753, students giving entertainments to procure funds with which to buy books. There is, however, no re- cord available as to the number procured. Earlier than this there had been a Public Library, the books having been provided by women's clubs, but this had been closed for some time. ln 1888, these books were taken from storage and combined with the school library books. Book cases were built on all four sides of the northwest room of the old Central School. Miss Fannie Wells spent the summer sorting, cataloging, and shelving these. Carthage citizens were allowed the use of the li- brary on payment of a membership fee of one dollar a year: however students and teachers had free use. That winter an entertainment was given for li- brary benefit, the program consisting of music and a talk by Prof. IC. E. Dodd, principal of the high school, describing his recent trip abroad. Later two candy sales were held. The proceeds from these undertakings were used for the purchase ol' new books and the rebind- ing ol' old ones. When high school work was transferred to what is now the Man- ual Arts building, the library became a part of the study hall, the room on the south side of the second floor. Later it was moved to the south- west room on the first floor next to the superintendent's office. Miss Wells was succeeded in 1889 by Miss Blanche Chase, and in 1900 Miss Pauline Kirke became librarian, serving until May, 1903, when Miss Marian Glenn took the position. She was followed by Miss Jessie Stemmons. ln 1905 the Carnegie I.ibrary was opened and books were divided between the two libraries. A room was provided for the library next to the study hall when the present high school building was erected in 1906. The rooms were separated by a large archway. ln time this was closed, the space making a needed closet. From time to time new shelving was added. That on the south side was presented by the class of 1908. The class of 1921 presented the shelves in the southeast corner. For several years the Cariheginifriiz staff used the northwest sec- tion, but their equipment was moved to the senior English room in 191-1. Miss Edith Saylor succeeded Miss Stemmons in 19133, and Miss May llukill became librarian in 1911. -May Hukill L H... -A i H v V Y X9-5, 3 - N . . . , . The Craft Club . . . . .
