We believe that citizens in a democracy should know how to discover and enjoy the best of life, and liberties of thought and action which are ours. To this end, it is our purpose to stimulate our students to develop a character of integrity which the citizens of a democracy must have if the democratic way of life is to remain in our country. The virtues which we strive to teach our students are: reliability, honesty, initiative, enthusiasm, and sin- cerity. We believe the student should be part of the world in which intelligent adjustments and readjustment may take place, L. N. Such is the motive force that dwells in the heart of each fresh- man, and in these enthusiastic hearts dwells the success of tomorrow's school. a'Robert Gadberry. President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Karl Mahan Glenn Haggard Lyster Hendrix John Scott Colors Motto Flower Old Rose and Silver We Build the Ladder by Which We Rise Rose Freshman Class Notes In September, the class of 1938 entered the Carthage High School, having reached the first great milestone-high school. Two hundred and sixteen boys and girls with minds set to win distinction in the classroom and in the activities of the school, were enrolled in this class. In October, a Freshman, Mary Ann Clinton, was chosen queen to rule over the benefit carnival at Memorial Hall. Mary Ann was also chosen drum major of the high school band. The band was given strong reinforcements by the addition of five Freshmen. Four joined the orchestra. Two members of the debate team, Halliburton Hough and John Cox, are Freshmen. The Freshmen have been very much interested in athletics. Three Won their letters in football and five Were on the B team in basketball. They have taken an active part in the societies and clubs, and were rep- resented in the operetta and on the Carthaginian staff. When the honor roll for grades was published the class was well represented by those making E's and S's and one girl, Margaret Wood, had a record of all E's for the semester. As the next three years pass, the Freshmen will move proudly, bravely on until they have reached achievement's crest. Conscious of their attainments, they face, with vision, graduation-the fulfillment of their great desire, an X I 4 as-, 'fi wg 4.5237 LW ll' Nerf :Killa ,nu ll E S55 ii iyfgi WVQQQ -1 7 ,. The societies of Carthage High School co- operate splendidly for the betterment of the school, each contributing an assembly program to the calendar of school events. This creates good will and interest between the society and the school itself. -Nadine Sanders. CLUB OFFICERS i First Semester President ..,...,,,..... ,7.,........7,,..................... We set our standards, then persuade, next coerce, then stress, thus, interest is stimulated, pride developed, and all of these elements combined eventually evolve that something toward which our efforts have been directed. The fundamental attribute upon which the achievements of Carthage High School are based is character development. The existing code of honor has been passed on from year to year until today our seven hundred students have a standard that any organization of similar character would do well to adopt. A great moral force moving silently and effectively among the student body awakening latent talents, creating inspiration, and stimulating a desire for accomplish- ment, emanates from the wealth of wisdom, the breadth of vision, and the integrity of purpose of those who have been charged with the task of directing our great in- stitution. However, nothing of marked excellence in human accomplishment has ever been realized without a proportional expenditure of human energy. Every youth must ap- preciate the fact that he has within himself the power to make his life noble. But, along with purpose and aim there must, in order to win life's success, be a persistent, and courageous continuance in the course once begun. Text-book knowledge within itself is not sufficient for a well balanced education. The daily activities of life demand the association and contact of one individual with many. The process of pleasant and congenial association is an art either natural or acquired. The various activities and societies of Carthage High School afford every student the opportunity of developing this art. The application of such an acquisition comes into a more general use in our school life where the unbreakable bonds of friendship are welded together. This indefinable, intangible, unconquerable something that manifests itself in the related parts of this annual produces the wonderful spirit that makes Carthage High School outstanding among educational institutions. Plummer ably played the role of interlocutor while Daniel Conley, Carrol Brizendine, Kenneth Hooker, and Carl Hobbs, the end-men, furnished amusement throughout the first part. Troubles, the dog, stole the show. Two dancing choruses, the pickaninnies and the scarf dancers, added glamour to the performance. Four ballroom dancers, Dorothy Hannum, Mary Louise Wetzel, Maurice Raschke, and Robert Head waltzed the show to a grand finale, with Robert Head inpersonating a girl and Dorothy Hannum taking the part of a boy. Two clever youngsters, Alice Mallory and Ray Wilkerson, gave a tap dance and the solo toe dance given by little Miss Mallory received great applause. The minstrel was accompanied by the high school orchestra with Betty Swope at the piano. A if .1 ff 57 - Appreciation A vote of appreciation from the students of Carthage High School is voiced for those patrons who have helped to finance this publication. The firms whose names appear in this book have for ma.ny years supported the interests of the school. Without their aid the extra curricula activities could not exist, and the students would be deprived of much plea.sure as well as diversified experience. The purpose of the Carthaginian is three-fold. First, it is a joy and satisfaction to those who leave the training ground of instruction. Second, it gives to the student who labors for its success invaluable experience. Third, it furnishes an authentic record of the achievements and pleasures of the pupils for the ensuing year. All of which means that the de- mands of the photographer, the engraver and the printer must be met. It is only through the generousness of these patrons whose names appear on the following pages, and who have so libera.lly contributed that the 1935 Carthaginian has been made possible.
