e AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE EXCHANGE STUDENT To The Carthadian: As I open my diary to the date-September 5th, 1962-I can see vividly engraved in my mind all the events of my first day at Carthage Central School. This date will be always remembered as the beginning of the most wonderful, the most unforgettable, the most exciting, and the happiest year of my life. Going back further in the yellowing pages of this diary, I cannot find in any other periods of my brief existence a single mention of as much happiness and pleasure as the present ones. The undeniable amiability bestowed upon me by the teachers, by the officers, and by the students of this school, is for me an expressive and clear exam- ple of American friendliness and good will. Though I have traveled almost all around the world-from the far East to the West, from the South to the North-it was only here, in the community of Carthage, that I found the most precious thing on earth. It is not made of gold, it is not made of clay, but it is made of human sentiments. It is what I call real friendship. The dearest portion of my heart is dedicated to all the friends I have made during my short stay here. Soon, I will have to depart, leaving behind this beloved town of Carthage. Too many fragments of my heart have I scattered this year, and too many are the enchanted memories that I collected forever. I cannot with- draw from them without a burden and an ache. Good-bye, my friends . . . Forget not that I shall come back to you. ma ofa. Facing page SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Sealed: Mrs. Henry Gilbert, Mr. Thomas Gibbons, Matthew Fletcher fpresidentj.
