The good times of the 1984-85 school year. The year started off well with the donation of the new lion sign from the Booster Club. The new sign an- nounces all the high schools happenings such as the theater class's productions of MASH and the Frog Prince. BEWARE OF THE LIONS would be a good sign for the football and basketball season. INDIAN BUSTERS was the theme of Homecoming this year and the football team put forth an excellent effort in the game. The VIPS include the Scholarbowl team, National Honor Soci- ety, lllinois State Scholars, and JETS team. The musical, the Wizard of Oz, and the Vari- ety Show were worth STOPing everything to GO see. Clubs and activities were very active and they brought people together to make new friends and YIELD money by selling can- dy. GO LIONS, showing school spirit, would be the best sign of these times this year. I 2foPENiNs 4 I Il , u,w,w . f 'lllllml W., .I3..'I' ilw ilf . . . ...II - -A 1 3 3.2154I4Ifes.'l'Q.u1..r' i f . The cheerleaders spon- sored a Mr. Cool contest, where one Cool Dude was chosen to represent each class. The girls esc ed the boy o the beautiful red and silver de Ballroom at SIU. Couples arrived for pictures early before the meal was served. The dinner was wonderful and the live band Spectrum was excel- lent at the dance. The excitement built and the time for the crowning finally arrived. Jennifer Spence, the Mistress of Ceremo- nies, began announcing the queen candi- dates, selected from each class. Genola Murphy was elected to reign as the 1985 Sweetheart Queen. The Queen then be- gan her royal dance with the other candi- dates and their escorts joining in later. lt was a fabulous event, and an experi- ence not to be missed. -a 14!SWEETHEART BANQUET 7 Sweetheart Queen Genola Murphy. Prom was held in the Renaissance Room at the SIU Student Center. Afterprom was held at the Recrea- tion Center where swimming, racketball, basketball, volleyball, and dancing were provided. The center was beautifully decorated in silver tinsel and metallic blue stars and bal- loons. The couples were given elegant champagne glasses and memory books. Gunrunner was the band providing the dance music at the formal prom. Mu- sic in Motion played the hits for after- prom. Angie Abell was crowned Queen and Kent Dawson was crowned King. They reigned over a festive evening. Most of the couples still out after the afterprom went to Denny's Restaurant for breakfast. Some even stayed out to end a perfect evening by watching the sunrise. e...,w..., 18!PROM P I JW M 4 NX , JV 5 -W'---', iw Z X H naw? ,,,fI' fuwamx' wh , N, ' ,, S, ' i wx f ...rail 'N rl' dr af me Aa s J t f i iitii , yr A , A ,, I - 1 V . if ,,, wlfwl ' ,Q Y 3 I ,. t i i l , ,S 1 it isl l 8 I0 9 What are you smiling for, Andrea Aird'? They started off the year planning Homecoming, the parade and the dance. They sold candy grams at Christmas and carnations on Valentine's Day trying to raise money, which they donated to the Statue of Liberty and the Dream Factory. They also used their money to pay for pic- nic tables that students can use to eat on next year. Some of their other activities consisted of hosting Spring Week. Spring Week con- sisted of nerd day, hug day, Hawaiian Day and a Hawaiian Dance and Carnival. The student council attended a student districts meeting where they met with stu- dents from other schools and traded ideas. They also spent time talking to Mr. Newton about weighted grades. The stu- dent council finished off the year with a luncheon at Prime Time. W ,V , tmxazaiv, M Tierney Drew shows her school spirit on Hawaiian Day. -. The class which is taught by Mrs. Connie Church and Mrs. Sheri Hunter is scheduled seventh hour for the first semester. ln this short period of time two shows were pre- sented. They were M.A.S.H. and The Frog Prince , a children's show performed for the younger grades. Some of the students attended a three day and two night trip to the Theatre Festival in Champaign, IL. Through the year, students learned about lighting, acting, writing and production. The members found the class enjoyable and useful. For the seniors who could have gone home seventh hour, it was well worth the stay. The class size greatly increased from the first year and brought back many of last year's juniors and added a large number of oth- ers. The class will surely continue to be suc- cessful. x fn . The band also performed at all the home football and basketball games. The pep band at bas- ketball games is always a favorite of the crowd. The Band went to organizational con- test on April 13 and received a first place. They went on to Superstate to perform once again. They also performed Cats in the Variety Show. The musical this year was the Wizard of Oz. The leads were played by Amy Hunter, Darren Nance, Brad Gentry, and Gail John- son. All the games played by the Lions were excellent, whether they were a win or loss. With the exception of the Anna- Jonesboro game, the Lions only lost by one or two points. The offensive team was good, but was hurt by fumbles throughout the season. Defensively the Lions gave up very few points. As in most cases, you can't judge a team's season only looking in the scorebook. Carterville beat the two South Seven Conference teams of Marion and Herrin. Helping the team this year that wasn't there in pre- vious years was the great depth of pitchers. The Lions had six pitchers that could play at any time. The season wasn't as great a suc- cess as all had hoped, but the coach and players really enjoyed the season. SENlORS!129 JUNIORS Planning and paying for the Prom is traditionally the task of the junior class. This year's junior class worked very hard to raise money for prom. They all pulled together and did their part for the good of the seniors. As always the junior class inherited the junior parking lot . They were known for their excellent driving skills and for their creative parking techniques - as noticed by Mr. Newton and other faculty mem- bers. mc, WP t,i',,uff1mP C ,Q-.sn 2:21 2 1. Our float this year was also the best but was turned down from the prize, because we used an old lion which was from the year before. The Sophomore class this year, has been quite a success. Our school spirit is great, our attitude is terrific, and the candy we sold was a big hit. As Freshmen WE were good. . .As Sopho- mores we're great and the future appears to be . . . Achievements include having 11 high honor students and 16 honor stu- dents at mid-semester, wrapping up the football season with a record of 7-1, earning second place in the free fair float contest, and netting 3513.81 while selling Christmas tree ornaments. Their sponsors are Mr. Kuntz, Mr. Marrs, Mrs. Newcom, Mrs. Oliva, and Ms. Triest. Several students from Study Hall took their own time to go sell ads for the benefit of the yearbook. By their hard work and devotion, they helped to pay for the publication of the yearbook in your hands right now. On behalf of the entire Journalism staff, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of these loy- al sellers. I would especially like to thank Mrs. Janes and Scott Woolard for their outstanding help. THANK YOU!
