Reon Crain ................. eyes ' ' ................ l g - I 1927 ' BLACK DIAMOND 1927 1927 BLACK DIAMOND 1927 Semor Class H1story In the fall of the well remembered year 1923 forty four lllustrrous Grammar school graduates entered dear old C C H S upon thelr educa tronal career Th1S career was to have been one of sunny days but before 1tS close they found many dark and dreary days that tended to make lt some what wearlsome But bemg mfluenced by the 1nsp1r1ng atmosphere that exlsted w1th1n the walls of the school they solemnly determlned to attaln the goal Graduatron Thelr Freshman year was one of hardshlps and blnuders but by con stant assoclatron Wlth members of the Faculty they were taught the fun damentals of applylng themselves to the1r studles A meetlng was called and by vote of the class Lawrence Dameron was made Presldent They advocated co operatlon from the start and It has manlfested rtself through out as one of the hlgh ldeals of the group Thelr Sophomore year was a more successful year than the prevlous one due to the fact that they had gathered some honest knowledge of Ethlcs and Educatlon Thls year proved to be successful ln all llnes ecpec 1ally ln Athletlcs Not bemg satlsfied w1th just any sort of organlzatlon a meetlng was called the class selectxng Edward Rutherford to hold together the mass that had so much enthusiasm they could hardly be controlled but co operatlon reasserted ltself and molded a stronger class than before In the autumn of 1925 the noted Junlor class cllmbed the steps to the bulldlng to set a pace that no class could surpass Th1S bemg thelr ambltlon they clearly proved to all that the year spent as Junlors was one of renown Thelr tlme at the Junlor Semor Banquet was one that w11l never be for gotten as It was enjoyed by every one In the glorlous year of 1926 the same Junlors now Senlors moved to the assembly to resume the seats that had been vacated by a class that was thought of as artlsts ln all llnes Of course competltlon and progress are the two maln forces that brmg about ldeas of Superlorlty So endeavor mg to make the Senlor year the most profitable ln the hlstory of their edu catlon they are departmg from deal old C C H S wlth a spark of ambltlon that touches the recesses of thelr souls whlspermg Never falter but always succeed Ill . . ... u e H ,, . . 1 1 ' . . . 1, ' - 1 ' 1 1 sl ' sv 1 v ' V - 1 . 1 ' 1 v 1 , . 1 1 1 . 1 ' . . Y . . . f ' Ethel Bloodworth Wilbur Hadfield Nathan Perrine Helen Samuel l 1927 BLACK DIAMOND 1927 Freshman Class H1stor y Why we ve falrly flown through thls lap of the yourney' exclalmed an enthuslastlc group of one hundred thlrty travelers as a monstrous aeroplane of the famous C C H S l1ne made a successful landmg Reporters crowded to take plctures of the plane and 1ts passengers and to hear the story of the fllght Fred Hlndman chlef pllot was s1ngled out to tell the tale We took off from Freshman Fleld about 8 30 A M August 29 1926 There was evedy prospect of a record break1ng fllght ahead Thxs was the 1n1t1a1 fllght of the largest plane ever used by the C C H S Co Une hun dred th1rty passengers had applled for passage and we made room for them all They chose me as pllot w1th Antonlo Pol1tan and Kathryn Ushaw as asslstants we carrled along Mrs Ste1nhe1mer and Mr Trees as chlef advls ory p1lots Each passenger contr1buted hls share of the necessary fuel th1s plane as you know IS operated not by gasollne but by bralns Our teachers acted as observat1ona11sts and mechanics They kept the compasses whlch were the examlnatlons we had now and then showlng our progress class served as lubrlcatlng o1l that kept the shlp runmng smoothly The school room was the cock p1t where the passengers rode and we were all firmly strapped ln by our eager deslre not to be qultters Several tlmes durlng the first part of the journey we stopped to cool off the eng1ne and have some recreatlon October 30th and the Chrlstmas holldays were some of the trmes On November 11th we stopped to pre pare for the parade on Homecomlng Day ln wh1ch we won the prlze of Hve dollars glven for the best ldea as to dress and clever ldea for our part 1n the parade Perha ps you had the same fun that we d1d on thls occaslon Durlng these tlmes we achleved some honors Ruth Boren made the Debatlng team and Fred Hlndman made the football team Near the mlddle of the yourney we encountered some rather vlolent wmdstorms lthe semester examlnatlonsy but w1th our plenteous supply of gasoline we pulled through A very few of our crew declded to d1scont1nue the Journey and a few changed l1nes We had our dlfficultles to be sure One of these was that we passed through a1r pockets nearly every Monday mornlng Th1s was when the classes were dull 1n thelr Mondays work especlally ln the sprlngtlme when they contracted sprlng fever On these occaslons the mechanlcs would be rather dlsgusted wxth our progress On the whole our tr1p was a happy one and all too soon the observatxon allsts told us that we were nearmg our destlnatlon We were glad and sorry too for we hated to part w1th our teachers At last came the day We had arrlved at Sophomore Field' IJI and standing. Carter V1ce Pres1dent Floyd Smothers Secretary and Rlchard Watson Door keeper A team of slx was chosen to represent the school ln the Conference debate The team was composed of Paul Dorr1s Lawrence Damron and Floyd Smothers tnegatlvep and Leon Lauder Kenneth Corley and Rlchard Watson taffirmatrvej The Conference debate was held on February 22 The neg atlve team went to Marlon and the aflirmatlve team stayed at home to compete with Eldorado Unfortunately both teams lost this debate but the good they derlved from the trammg w1ll be beneticxal to them ln the years to come The teams made a good showlng in the other debates that were of less lmportance and each member of the team was awarded a letter whxch he appreclates very much IS6 Charles Williams, Secretaryg and Lawrence Damron, Door-keeper. ' -. . . . . . , . . , . . , . , T . 1 ' ' - 1 1 , . ls 11 ' ' ' 1 , . . . 1 1 , ' 1927 BLACK DIAMOND 1927 Sen1or Play Second Childhood The Senior Play Second Childhood was glven Aprll 14th 1927 at the Lyric Theatre The scene Doctor Realyeas home was well laid even though lt was complicated Lawrence Damron alias Doctor Realyea carried his part as an absent minded professor very well After 25 years of work hardships and failures he d1scovered the Elixir of Youth which 1n the end had never been tested as he thought It had and he was forced to begin hxs experimentatlons all over again His daughter Sylvia Realyea a modern flapper type was carried by Reon Crain After all her love affalrs she finally came out all right with Phil while General Henry Burbeck Ray Boren was left ln the suds with all h1s wealth Ida Carter the Auntle Mrs Wellsmlller quarrelled and fussed with every one who came near her She never allowed any young man to put his arm around her 1n the morning When the time comes for her to play the part of the aunt in real life it seems that she will be well prepared to do so Reba Bearden Marcella a Spanish girl and the daughter 1n law of Gen eral Henry Burbeck caused much disturbance with her baby and was always golng to keel some one This was Rebas first experience on the stage but never the less she played her part excellently Philip Stanton a popular young man a partner of Professor Realyeas and very much ln love with Sylvia was played competently by Paul Baker This was also Pauls first acting experience Faye Bryan Sheriff Johnson with the ald of Deputy Sheriff Stoker How ard Miller had considerable trouble in keeping Professor Realyea and Ph1l1p Stanton from golng to Jail Their chief duties were to keep on track of all the neighborhood bables and dogs These parts were competently carried The part of Judge Sanderson a very dlgmfied sedate fellow was played by Edgar McCree who acted the part well Mrs Vlvvert the old gossip was the nuisance of the neighborhood and a nosy old sister who attended to other peoples affalrs so much that as a result of this her baby and dog were stolen Mrs Henderson Louise Odgen Mrs Vivvert s mother was the present day type of grandmother who is eter nally runnlng down the on coming generatlon with her old fashloned ldeas Lucille Norton Lo1s Lindsey was a nelghbor of Mrs Vlvverts She was the kind who get their cars taken from them for not paying the payments due The play was pronounced a howling success by everyone l89 -0- -o- s 1 ll ' 11 ' ' 1 1 , . .
