This floodable well is an LSD's most distinctive characteristic. Secondary missions include functioning as Boat Haven and Repair Ship for all types of landing craft. Routine operations for CARTER HALL encompass the carrying of troops, general cargo, Wheeled or tracked heavy vehicles, and any type of floating craft which will fit in her well, ranging from standard landing craft to miscellaneous barges, dredges tugs boats and harbor craft After her commissioning in September 1943 at Oakland California, USS CARTER HALL QLSD 35 was immediately called into action to participate in the great Pacific Fleet World War ll Amphibious Operations I 'FIU 9 cf the Pacific. She saw action Borneo Pr' Rrna ' 1944 in the Admiralty invasion of Guam i. 1944 CARTER HALL vi 1 invasion of Morotai Island. Then anotnei battle star was added to her growing list when she participated in the invasion of Leyte. She was then called upon to trans- port vital cargo in the amphibious assault on the islands of Balikpapan, Borneo, and Hollandia.
