He graduated from Swarthmore College in June 1946 with the degree 'Bachelor of Science With the major in Mechanical Engineering, then was comrnisisioned Ensign, class of 1947. He graduated from the Navy General Line School, lgfonterey, California, in 1956, and completed- postgraduate study at the U S . Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Cali- fornia,, Where he graduated in June 1961, majoring in Electrical Engineering in the Naval Engineering Curriculum. Commander Mussetto's tours of sea duty have included assignment to the Gun- nery Department of USS NORTHAMPTON QCLC-15 from December 1956 to June 1958, where he served as First Lieutenant, USS OLMSTED QAPA-1885 from July 1958 to February 1959, Where he served as Opera- tions Officer and Executive Officerg and USS MOUNT MCKINLEY QAGC-73 from July 1961 to April 1963 as Operations Of- ficer. He participated in the Lebanon Oper- ations in 1958 and the Cuban Operations in 1962. ' 'af -.. 'ft' - ' Healse served in the Harbor Defense Unit, Norfolk Q1952 - 195353 was Officer in Charge of Joint Task Force SEVEN Under- water Detection Unit 41953 - 19543 which participated in Operation CASTLE for the conduct of atomic and thermonuclear tests at the Pacific Proving Ground, Marshall Islands, served with Mine Hunting Unit, Norfolk Q1954 - 19565, and was on the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Q1959J. Commander Mussetto has been Com- manding Officer of USS CARTER HALL QLSD-37 since 21 May 1966. Prior to asstun- ing command of CARTER HALL he was as- signed to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California 11963 - 19661 where he served as Curricular Officer for Ordnance Engineering Programs. The primary mission of the USS CARTER HALL QLSD-37 is to carry, in her floodable well, pre-loaded heavy assault craft QLCU or LCM-85 in direct support if an amphibious assault. This floodable well is an LSD's most distinctive characteristic. Secondary missions include functioning as Boat Haven and Repair Ship for all types of landing craft. Routine operations for CARTER HALL encompass the carrying of troops, general cargo, Wheeled or tracked heavy vehicles, and any type of floating craft which will fit in her well, ranging from standard landing craft to miscellaneous barges, dredges tugs boats and harbor craft After her commissioning in September 1943 at Oakland California, USS CARTER HALL QLSD 35 was immediately called into action to participate in the great Pacific Fleet World War ll Amphibious Operations I 'FIU 9 cf the Pacific. She saw action Borneo Pr' Rrna ' 1944 in the Admiralty invasion of Guam i. 1944 CARTER HALL vi 1 invasion of Morotai Island. Then anotnei battle star was added to her growing list when she participated in the invasion of Leyte. She was then called upon to trans- port vital cargo in the amphibious assault on the islands of Balikpapan, Borneo, and Hollandia.
