FROM T E APTAIN f CARTER HALL's distinctive perform- ance during this Western Pacific cruise was achieved by the esprit de corps of her crew. At p the beginning, this spirit was re- flected in the Da Nang-Dong Ha shuttle which resulted in a commendation from C ommander Naval Support Activity Da Nang, and a Well Done from Commander Sev- enth Fleet. During the cruise she attained the competitive standing of Number One Ship in Amphibious Squadron SEVEN, and held it throughout. Her sense of responsi- bility and pride in achievement earned commendations from Commander Amphibi- ous Squadron SEVEN, Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosukag and Officer in Charge, U.S. Fleet Weather Facility, Sangley Point. She also was named as having the best small mess of the Squadron in Ney Award r E Competitionf' 1? . The patriotism of her crew in sup- porting the United States Savings Bonds Program resulted in her receiving the Treasury Department's highest award, the. Minute Man Flagg and, in addition, aTreas- ury Department Citation. -' After the cruise she was selected as the Squadron nominee for the Force Com- mander's Personnel Excellence Awardg Vase Marjorie Sterrett Awardg the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy, and, as Number One Ship in the Squadron, the Battle Efficiency Plaque. Throughout this period CARTER HALL was a proud ship, with the smartness of her crew and high reenlistment rate re- flecting her high state of morale. Wootten, USN,'Lwas presented the Legion of Merit Medal with combat V on 29 Decem- ber 1966 in agpiqemony S' on board USS CARTER HALLWTQSR-35 at the U.S. Naval Repair Facilityfiffokosulia, Japan. ' ' The awarelfff was given to him for his service as an advisor to the Vietnamese Navy River Force from 18 September 1964 to 18 September 1965. Commander Bruno Mussetto, USN, commanding officer of CARTER HALL made the presentation in a ceremony before the ship's company.
