ne1ghbormg countrles Wh1le prepar1ng to leave Itook my car in for a check up and gas to the former Pruxtt Shell Statlon now owned by R1chard Standefer Th1s bus1ness covers two square blocks and Dxck IS sellmg cars l1ke hotcakes Wh1le my car was be1ng checked I stepped Lnto the restaurant across the street and was met by the sm1l1ng face of Mxss Norma Schroeder said by many to own the most successful restaurant bus1ness m the world After drmkmg my coffee that burned all the way down whxch zncxdentally 15 manufactured bythe Dorothy Long Coffee and Chem1cal Co I returned to my automoblle and proceeded on my Jaunt On my way through Jacksonville I encountered Betty Brady who 15 now Head Matron of the Illinoxs State Hosp1tal She appeared to be havmg a gay old t1me wh1le pushmg her lawnmower around the yard It was wh1le I was chatting wlth her that I recelved the sad news about our sc1ent1f1c mmded Rlchard Logan being the head Lnmate up there now It seems he had a nervous went to the msurance Off1Ce to see about payment for fxxlng the car and who should the xnsurance agents be but Miss Nelhe Shafer and M1ss Maxlne Shanks After greeting my old classmates and gettmg my car f1xed I found a ticket 1n the gutter to the Ch1cago Revue of 1960 the star of course was none other than the exotlc M1ss Dorla Wagner Qwhose Shlmmy once started the Frisco quake' J Her co star the charmmg handsome 1nd1fferent Arnold Bowers was bus1ly engaged m deep conversatlon w1th two of the chorus g1rls M1ss Bobby Ann Wxllxams and V1rg1n1a Hartwxck After v1.ew1ng an enjoyable show I then proceeded out to the ballpark where I saw Paul Bushnell pxtch h1s fortleth stralght no hltter agamst the hopeless St Lou1s Cardxnals Raymond Bland head of the ground crew told me that Buddy Joe Moss and Pug Portwood made two fme assxstants whenever they decxded to work and re fra1n from looking at the bleacherttes A few days later 1n North Dakota I plcked up a h1tch hxker who was none other than my old companlon Jake McCaherty Whtle rem1n1sc1ng he told me Imxght f1.nd S1d Re1f at the local bank 1n Blsmarck I hurrled there to f1nd S1d bus1ly engaged 1n the bankmg busitness scrubbmg the txle floor S1d descr1bed h s work by saymg No Place L1ke Home ' Saymg goodbye to S1d I drove 1nto Montana and whxle looklng for a place to spend the nlght I arrxved at the Last Chance Inn' owned by none other than the former All Amerxcan Bob Graner Whlle dxmng that evenlng I ran across Robert Hamel now the welght l1fta.ng champlon of the woz ld HL tx axns by carrylng h1s many different w1ves across thresholds He asked me xf I destred to place a small wager on one of the lo McDonald who always has been mterested -in horses After spendlng a fxtful evenlng I proceeded to Yellowstone Natlonal Park and there I saw a g1.rl chasmg a pack of bears trymg to capture one to obta1n a fur coat Upon lookmg closer I percexved 1t was the one and only Mary Louis Rxchards After a short talk wlth Mary I wert to look at Old Faithful and who should be standmg above the mouth of Old Falthful but Herbert Graham lookmg for a free shower After the eruptlon and disappearance of Herb I proceeded to Boxse and look1ng for entertamment that nxght I declded to spend my evenmg at one of the local theatres The txcket taker was none other than that fabulous red head Mlss Helen Black Before the movxe started I had the pleasure of meetlng an old acquamtance who was now the manager of the Boxse Stockyards Dwlght Burger After chattxng awhlle w1th h1m Itook my seat and the free acts started That very famous tr1o cons1st1ng of Glenda Woolsey Leola Brooks and Marxe Carlton proceeded to thrxll the audxence w1th thelr verslons of such songs as That s What I L1ke About the South' After the free act the March of T1mes marched on and off The mam feature was a new Tarzan plcture starr1ng Leroy tMusclesj Wheeler the new 1dol of the Amerxcan bobby soxers It was very exc1t1ng and 1n one scene he was makmg v1olent love to Mary Eldred the Amazon Bullf1ghter After en uneventful trlp to Calxfornla I took to the a1r from the San Francxsco airport and who should the pxlot be but the mcomparable J1m Rldmgs a Every year there is one state meeting and one sectional meeting to which delegates are sent. There are emblems which show how active a club member you are. Beginning the first of January fourteen high school students worked on speeches or plays for the district speech contest held at Roodhouse on Saturday, February 28th. Our play was entitled Evening Star . Barbara Owens represented C. H. S. in comedy reading, Virginia Hutchens in serious reading, Betty Siebermann in poetry, Clement Smith in extemporaneous speaking, and Mary Eldred in oratorical declamation. The play was given in the White Hall gymnasium in the afternoon. A. is a farmyouth organization of boys enrolled in vocational agriculture, designed to develop leadership, the building of a more permanent agriculture, and the improvement of rural life. The F. F. A. members are very active and they believe in Doing to Learn . They have Poultry, Fat Stock, Dairy, and Grain Judging teams, a parliamentary procedure team, public speaking contests, Livestock Fair, and a Grain and Poultry Show. Each year three of the officers are sent to the State Convention at Urbana with expenses paid. They also sponsor their annual Parent-Son Banquet and this year took all day field trips. Three assembly programs were sponsored and all were greatly enjoyed by the student body. Homecoming on October 28 was the best ever for C. H. S. The Student Council had a Christmas party December 22 and a dance December 23 which was very successful. Everyone had a good time. Four assembly programs have been selected and arranged for next year. Within a month or so the club had a bake sale the proceeds of which went to buy an enlarger and other equipment. During the year there were several get-together nights here at the school house where the members practiced taking indoor pictures. Several entered national photo- graphy contests. Thursday night re- vealed all our loyal followers at the football field for a big bonfire and pep meeting. On Friday afternoon everyone including the school 'ind townspeople had a great parade of floats fo. which thc- townspeople turned ou in H t rr'r icrt vi '. Tiers- we floats cars carrying Homecoming Queen Candidates, and self decorated cars. First prize went to Jack Inman, second to the Sophomore Class, and the F. H. A. and Jun- iors tied for third. That evening the football boys made the Homecoming a big success by tromping ov- er Roodhouse in the game. After the game the big event of the evening was the crown- ing of the queen and the dance held at the gym. The maids of honor and escorts were Barbara Owens and Jim Johnson, Darlene Gillingham and Joe Johnson, Jewel Reynolds and Dick Standefer, Glenda Woolsey and Jim Ridings. Last was the crowning of our new 1949 Home-coming Queen, who was Mary Rich- ards, Her escort was Richard Mehrhoff.
