PROPHECY OF CLASS OF 4 On the day of Ianuary l 1959 I returned to Carrollton I was readmg an tssue of the local paper browsmg through one of my favonte columns Ten Years Ago I read about the commencement exercrses of the graduatmg class of 1949 That made me wonder what had happened to all of my fnends so I dectded to Imd out I went to the paper offxce-now called the Newste Newser of Carrollton and ran 1nto Barbara Flatt. who was the edxtor She lnformed me that Barbara Reno now the wrfe of Bob Skaqql president of the Skaggs Cough Drops for Cows Com pany had been named Best Dressed Woman of the Year by the newspaper women of Amerxco tThat certamly ts a great honor for Barbaral Mtss Flatt showed me a back Issue of the Newsle Newser whtch ran an artrcle about Sudsey Sally named the champxon wash woman It seems that many women protested when Sudsey Sally won the t1tle because she turned out to be Berna Lee Becker one of the nchest women ln the world The case IS to be brought tn front of the Supreme Court next month Thus lssue also told about Gale Staples bemg named the best flarrlack fltpper m the world It seems as though he flipped a flaplack 40 feet mto the air I walked down the street mto the new restaurant run by Lola Robert and bought an Issue of the new magaztne The Orbit When I tumed the page I read the edttonal wrxtten by the editor Bill Boo One of the fmrst art1cles that caught my eye was the AdVlCe to the Lovelom Column wntten by Pat Shari. Pat Certainly has come a long way from her days tn C H S 'I'he arttcle about Romeo and Iuhette was very mter estinq It told about the terrtble acctdent that happened durmg one of the performances on a New York stage Romeo Charles Hurt. was standmg under the balcony smgmg to Iuhette Frances Turner Iwho has put on qutte a httle welght smce I fell off the balcony rtght on Romeos head When Charles recovered he was a vlcttm of amnesxa They took htm to the great psychtatrlst Mary Wolfey who has been trymg m vam for slx months to cure htm I also read about the great dns covery made by Dale Staples. One day he was dtvmg mto the ocean and htt has head on an oyster The oyster broke open and he found a pearl msxde Now Dale IS htrmg men to dtve into the ocean h1t thetr heads on oysters and bnng the pearls to htm 'I'he magazxne had been presentmg vartous awards to dlfferent people who were outstandmg ln thexr pro Iessions Some were as follows Darrell Ballard the world s most famous and demanded paper hanger Wayne Scoqqms the chlef omon puller tn the United States Fred Hartman the best square dance caller .n all of the 48 states Imcldentally Fred has been named to be the chtef caller for the large square dance held tn Madlson Square Gardenl and Paul Roady the best hog-caller of our time I saw Phyllis Melow on the street and she told me about Bally Camera Betty has become a stlent martyr because of an unfortunate love affaxr Phyllts says she hasnt uttered a word smce the unfortunate mcldent happened I asked Phylhs about herself she satd that she had become the supermtend ent of the Eldred Grade and Hxgh School She thought rt was very interestmg work you met such a vanety of people That aftemoon I went to the prcture show It was Home Sweet Home starrlng Doris Davidson. In the Newsreel I saw a very surpnsmg thmg It showed a ltttle town not far from here PIQVIIIS Ptgvtlle ts havtng a large celebratxon because of its new name Baldysvxlle tn honor of tts new owner Herman Reynolds. The Newsreel also told about the hrst let flight made to the moon The pllot and only man ever to set foot on the moon was Bob Branncm. The frrst thmg Bob saxd when he came back to the earth was tquotel The qxrls cer talnly are better lookmg tn Carrollton than they are on the rnoonl 18 After the Show I went over to the Televlston shop run by Betty Iouett and her huband Betty was tellmg m all about the televxsron world Its most famous female star IS Vxrqmm Dowdall. She has a comedy show and plays her httle Ivory prano The movles have made many offers to her but she prefers to stay w1th her prxde and Joy televlsxon The most famous male star IS Bob Lmn He IS called the Atom Bomb of Television One thmg the glrls like about Bob ts that he keeps his whlskers from showmg on the screen I went to the new Hugh School butldmg located north of the square It was really a beautlful burldrnq I saw Ina Brock ln the Commercral Banklng Room Ilt looked lust llke a bank to mel She IS teachmg that subyect m CH S now Ina told me that the contractor for the bunldmg was Glenn Ballard And Lynus Benner had been the rnterlor decorator I went ln to see the new typewnters and there was Bill Whitaker I-Ie told me that he was now sellmg and demonstratmg typewnters I asked how he got that Job and he satd Iquotel Oh smce I won the world s record at typmg 270 words per mmute how could they help but gtve me the lobl I saw Paul Tuey walkmg down the atsle and asked htm what he was domg here I m stlll takmg my Post Graduate Course I get to llke th1s school better every day' he told me The school was rather far from town so I went into the offrce to call a taxx The off1ce gtrl was Shirley Goans I called the operator and her votce sounded very famrhar I asked who tt was and found out that Evelyn Baker had held that rob smce she graduated from hlgh school I asked her who had the best taxt servlce ln town and she satd she would send a taxr out to me right away About half cm hour later the taxl ftnally arnved I walked out to tell the dnver Just what I thought of htm and found xt was a her In fact rt was Retha Reno She told me that a Dalry Farm had been bullt about flve mlles northeast of town and wondered rf I would hke to go out and see lt When we arrrved I met the owner and manager who used to be Mary Ellen Hubbard IOh well she always hked rt anywayl It was gettmg rather late so I decxded to go to the hotel to my room Iune Brannan the owner of the hotel told me I had a telephone call wartmg for me I went up to my room and called the number It turned out to be Charlotte Goans She told me that she was gomg to try for the Mtss Amertca t1tle after wmmng the Mtss Honey Bee contest last year I told her I wlshed her all the luck rn the world I heard some muslc next door that sounded very good to me so I went to Imd out who 1t was I knocked on the door and Georgxana Rice answered She was on her way to Chlcago to smg at the Chl cago Opera She and her travelmg compamon lame Holtord. were going to leave rn an hour That mght I went down to eat m the large dmmg room There was Barbara King m a chef s outflt mrxmq salads for the guests Every guest must be pleased ts her motto The Dmtng Room Hostess was Vernlta Clendenny After supper I went back to my room and looked at my 11st of Semors There were two left I looked tn the telephone book for them Both of the names Dons Hartwick and Hester Bailey were ltsted I called Dons and she told me that she now ran a prosperous busmessgan Ant Farm She sald she had turned thexr old farm mto the Ant Farm and that they were an up and commg busmess Then I called the last one on my lxst Hester She told me she has become the presrdent of a club called Preventton Of Old MG1dS From what l heard of the club and tts presldent rt seems that they had accom plrshed very much Well the clock sald ten o clock and I thought I had better put out my hght and turn 1n Then I stopped a moment to thmk I owed all thxs day to the Ten Years Ago Column a wonderful day of remmtscmg I then flxpped off the hght and all was dark 7 last saw her: she now weighs 250 poundsl. MUSIC The Carrollton High School Glee Clubs presented their annual Vesper Service on December 19 1948 under the direction of Miss Nita Ford at the Presbyterian Church at 4 30 p m Some of the grade school choruses also participated This service proved to be the most outstanding performance of the year The Girls Glee Club participated in the Music Festival at Winchester May 13 1949 Mr Henry Busche was guest conductor from MacMurray Col lege It proved to be a very profitable experience to all who attended the festival. The combined Glee Clubs held their May Festival May 17, 1949. This program was divided into two parts. A garden scene was the setting for the first part with many numbers from the light opera music. The life of Stephen Foster and his beautiful music was portrayed in the second scene. This was a very colorful and entertaining performance.
