Advice - - - Teachers Lead Busy Life Mrs. Day Gra de two Mrs. Sem mens Grade three Mrs. Kera nen Grade three The school year of 1958 has been an exciting one for the, teachers who moved into the new building with their young charges. For two of the teachers, Misses Hultstand and Stadum, it had a special meaning. It marked the first time either had taught in a school house: they had taught in the armory two and one-half years. Busy as usual, working with students and parents, these energetic teachers found time to put on a delightful Christmas operetta entitled, The Toys That Had To Wait, and a colorful Chinese operetta, me Emperor-'s Nightengale. Donald Nicolson was elect- ed to serve as Presidentg Dennis Unruh, Vice-Presidentg and Bob Erickson, Sec- retary-Treasurer. Miss Anderson and Mr. Rathe were the class advisors . Knowing that this was the year to save, they used very little money for their float. Even though they didn't win, their float was a good one and was clev- erly decorated. School days were flying past, and hard work soon began at the concession stands at basketball games . Their class rr.embers were well represented in var- ious sports, clubs, school parties, and any place that good leadership was need- ed . The junior Play was considered a success by the double standards of good acting and entertainment. Many Juniors enjoyed their first try at acting and are waiting for the opportunity again next year. Under the guidance of their excel- letn advisors, they finally offered a climax to any senior's high school days by giving them a very delightful prom . This marked another success on the record of the class of 1959 . Acting as class president for his second successive year was Mike Carmody. Assisting him as vice-president was Robert Kriewaldg and Jeanne Hagel, secretary-treasurer. Miss Fylken and Miss Zahradnik were class advisors. Sophomores soon began to play a big part in student projects, their first one being a class homecoming float, for which they won second prize. A Rough Ana' Ready Team Always Doing Their Best CO-CAPTAINS Fred Engbert, Dick Swartout Red Martin Cardinals started out the year with thirty-two grid- ders, perhaps the largest turnout since the Cards began pigskin pursuing. The first game was at New Rockford, where they met St. James in an easy win. The tables turned, however, when Carrington was held scoreless Reporting for Duty by the husky Minot Model gridders on the home field . The Cards had reason to rejoice at the season's end, for 5 they had a 4-3 record. Coach Red Martin is new to Carrington High School this year, but he has done a tremendous job in guiding the more experienced players to victory and initiating the inexperienced recruits to a rough and ready game. Losing only three regular games by one, two, and three point margins, the squad created a season of en- tertainment much enjoyed by the students and the com- munity. Under the very capable guidance of Coach James Keranen, who also led the Carrington Cardinals ,f y to the regional tournament in 1956, the team topped f Wu, off the district tournament in a very exciting game by , 1 N winning in a double overtime. At the regional tourney, the Cardinals won two out of three games, the second being an overtime game also. Fifteen students worth remembering--the members of the National Honor Society have proved themselves to their classmates and teachers alike. National Honor Society members are chosen by the faculty from the upper one-third of their class . Besides scholarship, in voting the teachers consider character, leader- ship, and service. This is a recognition that can be earned and is not automatic because of scholarship standing. In this way the student with somewhat better than average stand ing who has made himself valuable to CHS by service, attitude, and other accomplish- ments can be rewarded. The advisor for the Senior Honor Society is Mr. Marvin Rathe, and Mr. Hanson is advisor for the Junior Honor Society. Peggy Eastburn, Nancy Haedt, Jeanne Hagel, James Sletten, Richard Silkey, and Richard Wenstrom. For Superior ualities They Are Recognized Founders of the mythical forty-nine states over which the Boys' and Girls' State groups govern, the American Le- gion believes that our youth must have a clear understanding and a limitless faith in a democracy such as ours. Ex- perience in forming and carrying on such a government by our young people will provide the selected young leaders with the knowledge and desire to apply those principles in a real democracy. Only students completing their jun- ior year in high school and possessing the necessary qualifications are select- ed . Girls' State was held at the univers- ity in Grand Forks, North Dakota last June. The Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club each sponsored a boy and girl delegate. Two more girls attended under the sponsorship of the American Legion Auxiliary and BOYS' STATE DELEGATES: Darvln Hirsch, James Kraus, La the Fine Arts Club. The American Veme Ceumef' Legion sponsored a boy. Although plans for Boys' State were to be held at Fargo, North Dakota, last june had to be abandoned because of the results of a terrible tornado in that vi- cinity, preparations had been made and delegates had been chosen to attend. Delegates selected from C.l-I.S. are pictured here, for it is an honor to be so chosen even though the boys couldn't attend. The Sentinel and Cardinal Staffs sent we delegates to Grand Forks to attend the meeting of the National Inter-scholastic Press Association. Although the Sen- tinel had received a first place citation award by Columbis in New York City, it received only a rating of good at Grand Forks. The Cardinal received a rating of excellent. It was not entered in any other organization. GIRLS' STATE DELEGATES: Shirley Ol-cert, Marlene Galt, Bonnie Sletten, lean Ann Quenemoen. Milne, was pre- sented by members of the senior class Friday, April 12, in the high school auditorium. The story centers around activities at the Red House where Mark Ablett, the master of the Red House, had a dinner party. Things start building when Miss Norris decides to play a joke on Mark, which turns out to be the prophesy of Lady Ann. There is mystery, romance, and humor as I n- spector Birch tries to find the criminal, and Matthew Cayley and Anthony, be- come interested in Angela. The Red House turns out to be a detective bu- reau, a romance center, and a journal full of suspense. Just practicing. vw . . X! .Ng f WE SHOCK THE FAMILY TREE Sonja Skadberg . ........... An attractive grass hut with a huge palm tree centered the floor. Oval-shaped openings in the walled streamers were cleverly marked by guitars, castanets, and chartsg incidentally providing peek-holes for interested onlookers . Kermy's Quintet furnished the music for dancing which began at nine o'c1ock. Leading the grand march was junior class president Dick Swartout with his date, jackie Meyer, followed by the senior class president Eddie Smith and his date, Linda Beaudoin. Preceding the dance, the juniors, seniors, faculty, and school board members enjoyed a sumptuous banquet pre- pared by the junior mothers . Tables were attractively decorated in keeping with the theme. Calypso-clad Robert Maier, Don Nicolson, Robert Mitchell, Bonnie Berge, Kathy Zacher, Janice Nichols, and Bernie Guenther waited on tables . Entertainment at the banquet included vocal solos by Shirley Okert and James l-Ieringer. Superintendent Hanson was the main speaker, reminiscing and counseling as good leaders do.
