He graduated ff'0I'I1 on July 12 that year he subsequently advanced to April 1, 1967, and Hospi- .5 Lis training at the Naval Training year, then was a student at the Naval which he had instruction to serve at the Base, Camp Pendleton, Califor- nia. In 1968, he Company, Third Battalion, Seventh Fleet Marine Force and was serving as K, when he was killed in action on July 28, 1968, at the risk of his life above and be- yond the call of perations against enemy forces in the Re- public of Vietnam' ...' ffhe was awarded the Medal of Honor. The ci- tation further states: While,on a sweep throught an open rice field in Quang Nam Province, Petty Officer CARON's unit started receiving enemy small-arms fire. Upon seeing two Marines casualties fall, he immediately ran forward to render first aid, but found that they were dead. At this time, the platoon was taken under intense small- arms and automatic weapons fire, sustaining additional casualties. As he moved to the aid of his woundedcomrades, Petty Cfficer CARON was hit in the arm by enemy fire. Although knocked to the ground, he regained his feet and continued to aid the injured Marines. He rendered medical assistance to the first Marine he reached who was grievously wounded, and undoubtedly was instrumental in sav- ing the man's life. Petty Officer CARON then ran toward the second wounded Marine, but was again hit by enemy fire, this time in the leg. Nonetheless, he crawled the remaining distance and provided medical aid to this severely wounded man. lHeJ started to make his way to yet another injured comrade, when he was again struck by enemy small-arms fire. Courageously and with un- believable determination, Chel continued his attempt to reach the third Marine until he himself was ,killediby an enemy rocket. His inspiring valor, steadfast de- termination, and selfless. dedication in the face of extreme danger, sustain and en- hance the finest traditions ofithe United States Naval Service. He was awarded the Purple. 'Heart Medal for wounds received in the aforemen- tioned action. . up H In addition to the'-Medal OfiH0i'101fwaT1Gl th6 Purple Heart Medal, he has the Com- bat Action Ribbong, the. National 1DEfense Service Medalg and the Vietnam Service Medal. He also had the Vietnamese. Military .Merit Medal, the Republic of Viet- nam Campaign Medal and t'he'Vietfnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm.
