The Tomahawk launches were part of the coordinated air and missile attack that came as a result of Saddam IIussein's continued defiance of U.N. resolutions. l In response to Bring orders, Caron positioned herself in a specific location in the Red Sea. The ship's 12 missiles were lalmched right on time and in quick succession, striking precisely the Iraqi nuclear fabrica- tion plant target located 650 miles away from the ship. ' Caron deployed from Norfolk on Oct. 7 with the USS John F. Keruiedy KCV-672 battle group, commanded by Rear Adm. James A. Lair. The destroyer has been in the Red Sea since Oct. 25, operating with the Maritime interdiction Force under Commander U.S. Naval Forces Cen- tral Command. In addition to 'enforcing U.N. sanctions against iraq, Caron also serves as a ready-strike platform in the Red Sea. The success of Camn's missile launches, according to ship officials, came from the extensive integrated training ln port and tmder way before the deployment and the teamwork of various departments. Ship's engi- neers provided the power that got the ship on station with systems ready. The Tomahawk team planned the missile engagements, verified the mis- sion and conducted pre-tire checks. ,The combat systems ofHcer and lead- ing gunner's mate veniied the completion and acctu-acy of all prepara- tions. The maintenance anghplanning paid.,o5..a5.Camn's operations olicer and tactical action'oBicer cobrduiAted and ordered thejaunch while thefhndge watch team and the conning officer got the ship tb lts precise launch point. The teamwork came together on Jan. 17, making Caron a twice battle-tested strike destroyer. During Caronls final leg of her deployment, her chiefs celebrated their 100th birthday. Special guests included the Captain and the new XO, LCDR Wright.
