To the South lies Turkey, and her tentative control ofthe Bosporous Straits. To the West and North are Bulgaria, Fiumania, and the USSR. The Black Sea is a training ground and a supply center for the Soviet Mediterranean fleet which makes it an area of high interest for the U.S. The CARON made an unprecedented second visit to these Russian controlled waters, first with the USS FARRAGUT, and then with the USS MCCANDLESS, utilizing our Outboard gear for detection of High Frequency emissions. Also with the MCCANDLESS we conducted dual LAMPS ops, another first for the U.S. Navy in the Black Sea. The reaction from the Russians consisted of the predicted tattletalesg Kri- vak ll, Kotlin, and a couple AGl's, the Soviet intelle- gence gathering ships.
