THE OVIET THREAT One of the keys to achieving peace is a strong American fleet. The Navy is still a major instrument for resolving crisis short of war. Its very presence in a troubled spot serves as a deterrent. lt carries supplies, shows the flag and provides a flexible yet powerful instrument of force that can help defuse tension in an area before it deteriorates into crisis. It is a vital part of our defense establishment in peace as well as in war. A drawback to being operationally sophisticated and having some new and Important data collection gear on board IS that CARON has been called upon by the Sixth Fleet Command to serve on special observation missions This was seen early on In our cruise In fact we only spent enough time In Fiota Spain to allow for the DESRON 22 staff to be transferred from the USS FAR RAGUT We then steamed off fat a fuel saving speedl across the Western Basin towards the Krthera anchor age South of Crete to observe the movements and actions of the Russian ASW cruiser LENINGRAD We approached the anchorage at dusk the common summer haze obscuring the Identity of the clear blips on the radar presentation As we passed near the anchored vessels the ghost like Soviet ships became identifiable For the next few days we tracked followed photo graphed and logged the movements of the LENINGRAD before being relieved on station and heading for Naples This series of events underscored legitimate U S worries over the dramatic Increase In Soviet activity and build up In the Mediterranean over the past decade The driving force behind the present day Soviet strength has been Admiral of the Soviet Fleet S G Gorshkov who stated The flag of the Soviet Navy flies over the oceans of the world Sooner or later the United States will have to understand It no longer has mastery of the seas The political objectives are perhaps unclear and much dis cussed In higher circles but the fact remains that at any given time there are more Soviet units operating In the Med than comparable U S units lt IS true that the Sovl ets do not have aircraft carriers such as the NIMITZ or the same Wlth advancements In cruise missiles and other weapons systems The various exercises that we have been a part of espe cially In conjunction with members of the NATO Alliance are an Important factor In keeping the overall training and coordination ata high level to maintain an advantage In the balance of power The build up of Soviet forces their Increased shipbuilding programs etc have all been deliberate The U S has responded with newer ships such as the Spruance class and nuclear powered sur face ships to counter the threat of Intervention In such areas as the Middle East Greece Cyprus or Lybia Deterfence the ability to counter possible foreign ag gresslon against our European allies is a key Issue at many different levels of government and the Navy As for President Gerald R. Ford 1975 CARON being In the Med has heightened the awareness of her crew members and has made many of us more fully realize the Important responsibilities we have as members of NATO and the SIXTH Fleet We of the CARON are ready to meet the challenge If called upon to maintain that peace which has been a cornerstone of our way of life KITHERA ISLAND AND THE ANCHORAGE TO THE SOUTH rw!
