Y V Y H V Y V A- , , A STAR I BGR Unique in her capabilities, USS CARONQDD 97Ol stands out among the units of the Sixth Fleet as an example of deployable technology taken to its limit. This includes not only the advancements that the Spruance Class as a whole enjoys with gas turbine engineering, and the sophistication associated with the weapons systems, but a new twist is seen with Classic Outboard and Outlaw Shark electronic installations. As the eighth ship in her class, the CAFZON is the only Atlantic Fleet destroyer with both these new units, which extend her eyes and enable the shipboard strategists to plan their actions with the benefit of a more complete long range tactical picture. These systems are interfaced with computers, weapons, fnow including the Harpoon Cruise Missilel, and pieces of sensory gear such as radars, sonar and electronic warfare equipment. As a fighting ma- chine, this overall integration makes the CARON an enviable plat- form on which to serve. A. --4 I TROD CTIO TO THE MEDITERRA EA To the uninitiated, a deployment to the Medi- terranean as a member of Task Force 60 May seem like a vague series of glamorous port calls interspersed with combat exercises and Port visits were the essential second side of CARON's cruise, and the crew took advan- tage of the distinctive flavors of eachg the food, the warm beer, and the crazy drivers. 4 -- . To those on the CAFZON, each day on board, whether under- way -or inport, was a learning experience, both cultural and professional. We saw at close hand the sobering weapons platforms of the modern Soviet Navy, as well as the reclusive Hasidic scholars with their tradition- al broad black hats, walking the ancient streets of Jerusalem. We often times felt frus- trations, and just as often basked in the lime- light. Combat readiness, the ability to defend our- selves and our national interests, was the primary mission, and the CARON could be counted on to do both with skill and confi- dence. With increased Soviet presence in the Med, the CAFiON's job, whether tracking a Charlie ll submarine or targeting a Krivak frig- ate for possible air strike, became increasing- ly significant, and much was expected of us. Getting to where we are today has required a high level of aggressiveness, coordination, material support, talent, a tremendous amount of hard work and true dedication to the task at hand. Deployment to the Med does not start when the ship leaves Norfolk, nor during the PASSEX, but months ahead of time. For the CARON, that meant the yard period in Portsmouth, outfitting with NATO Sea Sparrow, Classic Outboard, and Har- poon. lt meant helo certification, NWAI, OPPE, Full Power Trials, fire drills, and Fie- fresher Training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But the key ingredient to the success of our ship was the ability to work as a team, to pull each other through the tight spots. The photographs on the following pages are not all inclusive, but a mere pictoral reflection of the sights, sounds, and experiences of our cruise. Benjaman Disraeli once said, The secret of success in life is to be ready when your op- portunity arrives. With this first deployment CAFiON's opportunity has arrived, she was ready, and has proven her success time and time again. PRE-DEPLOYM T 1' ABOVE: STILL IN THE YARDS. RIGHT: PREPS FOR GITMO. Its very presence in a troubled spot serves as a deterrent. lt carries supplies, shows the flag and provides a flexible yet powerful instrument of force that can help defuse tension in an area before it deteriorates into crisis. It is a vital part of our defense establishment in peace as well as in war. A drawback to being operationally sophisticated and having some new and Important data collection gear on board IS that CARON has been called upon by the Sixth Fleet Command to serve on special observation missions This was seen early on In our cruise In fact we only spent enough time In Fiota Spain to allow for the DESRON 22 staff to be transferred from the USS FAR RAGUT We then steamed off fat a fuel saving speedl across the Western Basin towards the Krthera anchor age South of Crete to observe the movements and actions of the Russian ASW cruiser LENINGRAD We approached the anchorage at dusk the common summer haze obscuring the Identity of the clear blips on the radar presentation As we passed near the anchored vessels the ghost like Soviet ships became identifiable For the next few days we tracked followed photo graphed and logged the movements of the LENINGRAD before being relieved on station and heading for Naples This series of events underscored legitimate U S worries over the dramatic Increase In Soviet activity and build up In the Mediterranean over the past decade The driving force behind the present day Soviet strength has been Admiral of the Soviet Fleet S G Gorshkov who stated The flag of the Soviet Navy flies over the oceans of the world Sooner or later the United States will have to understand It no longer has mastery of the seas The political objectives are perhaps unclear and much dis cussed In higher circles but the fact remains that at any given time there are more Soviet units operating In the Med than comparable U S units lt IS true that the Sovl ets do not have aircraft carriers such as the NIMITZ or the same Wlth advancements In cruise missiles and other weapons systems The various exercises that we have been a part of espe cially In conjunction with members of the NATO Alliance are an Important factor In keeping the overall training and coordination ata high level to maintain an advantage In the balance of power The build up of Soviet forces their Increased shipbuilding programs etc have all been deliberate The U S has responded with newer ships such as the Spruance class and nuclear powered sur face ships to counter the threat of Intervention In such areas as the Middle East Greece Cyprus or Lybia Deterfence the ability to counter possible foreign ag gresslon against our European allies is a key Issue at many different levels of government and the Navy As for President Gerald R. Ford 1975 CARON being In the Med has heightened the awareness of her crew members and has made many of us more fully realize the Important responsibilities we have as members of NATO and the SIXTH Fleet We of the CARON are ready to meet the challenge If called upon to maintain that peace which has been a cornerstone of our way of life KITHERA ISLAND AND THE ANCHORAGE TO THE SOUTH rw! To the South lies Turkey, and her tentative control ofthe Bosporous Straits. To the West and North are Bulgaria, Fiumania, and the USSR. The Black Sea is a training ground and a supply center for the Soviet Mediterranean fleet which makes it an area of high interest for the U.S. The CARON made an unprecedented second visit to these Russian controlled waters, first with the USS FARRAGUT, and then with the USS MCCANDLESS, utilizing our Outboard gear for detection of High Frequency emissions. Also with the MCCANDLESS we conducted dual LAMPS ops, another first for the U.S. Navy in the Black Sea. The reaction from the Russians consisted of the predicted tattletalesg Kri- vak ll, Kotlin, and a couple AGl's, the Soviet intelle- gence gathering ships. We were also visited on both occasions by Soviet Aircraft, including Badger fphotoj, and Blinders. lt was obvious that the CARON and her escorts caused a stir. .5 .... -- - .,--1 1 -L. -A-.- ...:.-.gE' q., ., ,..- f N H . . -- vases, i ,:- W -Tk,- 5 . V l , , . , BUT WOODY, WILL IT BASICALLY FLY? LAMPS ON DECK READY FOR LIFT OFF Defying various Newtonian Laws of physics, the LAMPS, fLight Airborne Multi Purpose Systeml, was a regular player in our operations. Skillfully piloted by the officers of HSL32 DET 2, this multi-bladed flying ma- ,,,,,,,m chine supported a variety of mission areas, including Anti-submarine warfare, SSSC, fSurface-Subsurface Surveillance Coordinationl, and important logistic re- quirements. She helped us target the Orange forces in mock battle, as well as brought us hundreds of pounds of eagerly awaited mail. To some of the crew, having the helo on board has meant more hours on the job, whether on the flight deck, or standing by at rescue station with the motor whale boat. It is also true that many hours were con- sumed by night landing qualifications and ASW oper- ations. But this unexpected asset, transferred to us from the USS PETERSON in July, complete with pilots and supporting personnel, has extended CAFtON's ca- pabilities. The LAMPS, known to us as the Silver Bird, utilizes a fairly old airframe, which has been modified over the years, and now includes MAD gear, fMagnetic Anomoly Detectionl, Radar, Sonobouys, Smoke floats, and can carry up to two MK 46 Torpedos. Under the cover of darkness, the CARON's anti-submarine attack force led by LCDR Bud Weeks, but known to others in the Med as Demon-One , with LT G. Snoopy Lake, mastermind ofthe operation, and LTJG Bill Mad Dog-nuc-em- til-they-glow Currie set forth in CARON ONE, crewed by BM3 Full Throttle Dickie, and SN Robert Ward. Their mission: to seek out and label the Orange Force's submarine contingent known to be in Cagliari Bay, Sardinia. Prior intelligence came from LTJG Gerhart who said, If they're not in there, l'Il eat my hat. So off into the tranquil black night they sailed, armed only with a flare pistol and knives from the ward- room pantry, to seek out their unsuspecting prey. Two hours later they returned. ln his brief report of this mission to the Captain, Mr. Lake said, lf they had been there sir, we would have plastered them! Unfortunately, l still have all the CARON CAN-DO stickers I left with. lt was great! the XO exclaimed. The boat crew said, We could have done it ourselves! Meanwhile LTJG Gerhart has found the cloth and cardboard quite edible, but the plastic tabs were a bit tough. LEFT: LIFT OFF! R - J... J-. lx .' For some ofthe CARON's crew, it was also a pilgrimmage to the holiest shrines in the Christian faith. Even in the few days we were there, friendships were formed, and we learned more than books can tell about the strength of a people which has carried them through many centuries of turmoil.
