PRINCIPAL SPEAKER Congressman Jack Edwards Jack Edwards was first elected to the House of Representatives from Alabama's First District in 1964. Following four years of service on the Merchant Marine and Fisheries and the Government Operations Committees in the House, he was assigned to the Appropriations Committee in January, 1969. Within the Appropriations Committee, he is the senior Republican on the Defense Subcommittee and the second ranking minority member on the Transportation Subcommittee. The Defense Subcommittee annually handles about one-fourth of the entire national budget. In September, 1972, he was elected unanimously to serve as Secretary of the House Republican Conference which makes him a part of the nine-man House Republican Leadership. Following service in the U.S. Marine Corps as an enlisted man, Congressman Edwards attended the University of Alabama. He was recalled by the Marines during the Korean conflict and then returned to the University of Alabama Law School where he received his law degree in 1954. He served as President of the University of Alabama Student Government Association. Congressman Edwards practiced law in Mobile for ten years. He was President of the Mobile Junior Cliamber of Commerce and has been active in almost every aspect of community and church life. He was chosen one of the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1964 by the U. S. Jaycees. Congressman Edwards is serving his thirteenth year in the U. S. House of Representatives.
