Social Studies students make use of the many reference materials available to them in the library. ociall Studies The location of the happening of events is just as important as knowing about them lbiellp train future citizens 0 ., 0 SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies are designed to promote interest in world affairs, to teach students to face social prob- lems, and to enlighten students as to their responsi- bilities as a future citizen. World History deals with the development of countries from the earliest known civilization to the present time. U.S. History is the account of all history since the time of Columbus. American Government stresses the importance of our democracy and the foundation of our Constitution. Another phase of social studies is Economics which is handled in the Business Department. -World History and Economics are electives while U.S. History and American Government are required subjects for the Juniors and Seniors respectively. S . students. rf .sfmm .st :rkmwtnwyt,sute i-ls ENGLISH The English department gives instruction to aid students to write and speak more effectively. Many students have their first real experience in giving verbal expression in giving book reports orally to their class-mates in English classes. In all four Eng- lish classes, which are required of all students, the fundamentals of grammar are taught. Parts of speech, diagramming sentences, and word usage are stressed. All students have the opportunity to read and analyze the writings of many of the great authors. In English Ill, the writings of American authors are studied, while in English lV, English literature is stressed. College Prep English, taken by a large per cent of the Seniors, is excellent preparation for the pro- spective college students. Centered around writing, the course requires the writing of many themes as well as a research paper.
