Following tradition, the 1983 seniors won the overall Homecoming competition. The seniors placed first in the float competition, first in the pin the tail on the cat, second in the banner and second in the class yell. Other events were costume parade and Homecoming voter turnout. The class of ' 83 was always a little behind when it came to spirit. However, this victory , (after a three year struggle) carried on the tradition of winning senior classes. Under the strong leadership of Tiffany Fong, the sen- iors were a wealthy class. After the Heath candy sale and Halloween flower sale the class budget was close to $5,000. Due to the closure of San Carlos, there were two Vice Presidents: Raymond Farris representing San Carlos and Linda Barron. Clarissa Louie advanced with her experience as junior secretary to senior secretary. The class of ' 83 has definitely innproved with age. Be- tween freshman and senior years 30 new people have become board members. ' I BEGINNING A NEW YEAR EVERYBODY ' S WORKIN FOR THE WEEKEND! All week long, all that ' s in the back of everybody ' s minds are the week- ends; it ' s like a big flashing neon sign. . People are counting down the days and making sure that homework and housework is done. So, the less time spent at home, the better! WHAT TO DO ON THE WEEKENDS: TIPS FROM YOUR FRIENDLY YEARBOOK PEOPLE Hey! Hey, Wait a minute. Who, me? Yea. Can I ask you a question? Yea, I guess so. I ' m new in town, and I ' d kinda like to know what people do on the weekends. How would you answer that question? Well, there ' s always the city ... San Francisco has just oodles of things to do: You can go to Alcatraz, or you can take a Bay cruise, and then again you can hit the Punchline (ha ha), of course there ' s always Pier 39, or you can dance the night away at the Paladium, and last but not least, skating in Golden Gate Park is a sure way to have fun . . . as long as you don ' t do it in the dark! Not enough? Well, if it ' s not too far to drive, cruise on over to the coast. Boring? How can you say it ' s boring? The beaches are nice for anything from sunbathing to walking along the water with someone special. P.S. A lot of good restaurants out there. Still unsatisfied? For you folks with a bit more cash, skiing is just 3-4 hours away! Just think - all that powdery snow, everything glistening white and crystal clear. All for free . . . unless you want to ski, of course. Lastly, I would like to mention the parties. Yes, parties. Discover who that gorgeous guy is in your third period class, dance away your problems (for a while) to music that could break the sound barrier, and just basically have a good time. ENJOY YOUR WEEKENDS! 87 RISE AND SHINE! Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzl-Yes it ' s that wonderful time again! 7:00 a.m., and time to get up and face reality-among other things. C ' mon, you can do it. Just talie one leap-throw back those covers and jump out of bed. There you go-you ' re doing it!- Crash!-oh well, better luck next time. t t So-you say you ' re tired of getting up so early! You think school should start at 10:00! It just isn ' t fair!! And, yes, I demand more respect!!! Roger! It ' s 7:45. No respect, I tell you. Roger! You ' re going to be late! Sure, sure. Roger!! GET OUT OF THAT BED!!! oh yea-o.k. I ' ll be down in a minute, mom. As you stumble down the hall with towel and toothbrush in hand, your mother watches amazed as you artfully dodge your little brother ' s toys on the floor, nearly miss slamming your face into the wall as you round the corner heading towards the general direction of the shower. Isn ' t it amazing what you can do with your eyes closed? Stuffing the last of your breakfast into your mouth, you grab your books and dash out the door still chewing. Jump- ing into the car, you mumble an apology in between swallows saying that your mother forgot to wake you up. All of a sudden, you ' re blasted into the next galaxy and back-your friend turned on the stereo. WHEW! You made it! You just have time to flop into your desk and pass out before the bell rings. Huh? What home- work? oh. THAT homework, uh, I forgot. 88 THE YEAR ' S AT CARLMONT New Students- Staff Football- 2 P.A.L. Valley Girls-Are Like, Tubular! Y ' Know? Wrestling 2 P.A.L. Steppin ' Out Soccer- Ist-P.A.L.- See Ya Later Alligator HEADLINES WE ' RE WORKING EOR THIS? Is 1983 going to be the end of the America we know and life as we know it? Are those terrible Commies gonna come an ' getcha? Is the American ideal of freedom going to be dashed to the rocks in our memories? Well, we certainly hope not. Nuclear War seems to be the giant paranoia monster that resides in our dark closets only to jump out and attack when we turn out the lights. It is an ugly creature that is rearing its horrible head to shake the towers of our governments with apprehension and fear. Will our governments be able to overcome this monster in 1983? That remains to be seen. This disease called Nuclear War has been, at the very least, an underlying threat to our country since the 1950 ' s and before. People even went so far as to build bomb shelters in their backyards in an attempt to protect themselves from the inevitable . It wasn ' t really inevitable, but it seemed to be so at the time. Countries nowadays have at least two nuclear bombs. But of course! What country would be complete without them? Per say, if all of the smaller countries have two or so, and if the medium-sized countries have some- where in between seven and ten, and the MAJOR powers have so many that they won ' t openly reveal, AND, if of what the major powers have ac- cumulated is sufficient to destroy the world, how far are we going to let this go? h We mean, seriously folks, how many times can one thing be destroyed? I read somewhere that one thing can only be destroyed once. A U.S. History teacher says if the U.S. and Russia had a war, a Nuclear War, and all of the Russians were killed with only one American survivor, we won. We? You ' re wondering why someone wrote something about Nuclear War in the yearbook. I mean, how boring? Like I wanna hear about some radical parties and some awesome ski trips! Well kids. Nuclear War is having a big effect on our country and other countries as well. THE CLASS OF ' 83 BIDS Our past four years of Education has been interesting to say the least. Freshman year was exciting and new to us. Just as it was probably new and exciting for this year ' s freshman. Soph- omore year was more relaxed and we felt a little more comfortable in our surroundings. Junior year was a year of tension. We were all filled with the apprehension and fear because we were all worried with which school would be closed. Finally, Senior year. Whew! We made it! San Carlos closed and people were moved shuffled around. We would like to welcome those people, especially those who are Seniors, because we know how much it must have hurt, and how good it feels to have friends in strange places. 2ARLMONT FAREWELL ATHLETES LEADERS OF THE CLASS OF 1983 We are a unique and talented class. Besides leadership and academic excellence, we are re- presented by dominance in sports. Such fine athletes as Gary Artist, Bob Capuzelo, Ernie Chacon, Mark King, Eric Sentman, Chris Souder, Doug Williams, Lisa Fuertes, Tracey Ayers, Rainey Miller, Joanne Lawrence, and Krista Naumoff, have performed for the mighty SCOTS for four years. These players have led their respective teams to numerous champion- ships. Ray Farris, a transfer student from San Carlos, had a fine year and earned himself a football scholarship to Utah State University. NJ As the years roll by, as the times change, stu- dents at Carlmont High will come and go. But the class of ' 83 will be remembered for the people and the good times that we had. Each member helped to make our four years at Carlmont most enjoy- able, and these four years are the times that we will never forget. To make a good class, you need good leaders. These are the people who organized activities for others to enjoy. Because of strong leadership in the class, we were able to win the Homecoming in our Senior year, have two successful ballroom dances, and enjoy our senior year to the fullest. Chris Paulus, Tiffany Fong, Sharene Saberi, David Coleman, Lynn Mark, Clarissa Louie, all helped in their leadership positions. In each class you ' II find those people who help to keep Carlmont respectable by working hard at their studies, trying to earn the best grades. The class of ' 83 was lucky to have numerous students that worked hard to do their best, including Rusty Cinque, Zeva Fong, Lyndon Chee, Jenny Litz, Yvonne Pang, Sabrina Chen, Mary Harrison, and Rob Levinson. School, however, is not just the place for stud- ies. An important aspect to the daily grind is the sports program that adds flavor. Carlmont is noted for its talented sports teams, and this year was no exception. The varsity football team placed second in the league; boys and girls cross country had many exceptional runners; boys and girls soccer teams placed first or near the top, and the list goes on. All of these people who helped to create an outstanding four years, but it was the people be- hind the scenes, those people who the leaders could count on to do the jobs, those that support- ed the athletic teams or those who perhaps helped to push the brains to higher levels. Both the announced and unannounced students are responsible for the pleasure each of us re- ceived in attending Carlmont: We will leave here after June, but our memories will linger through- out the school, and the good times will remain with us always. so WE CAN SHARE THE GOOD . nr HI-DAY RALLY This years Hi-Day rally packed the gym. As tradition has it, it was a time to welcome the incoming Freshman to Carlmont High. Each class picked one lucky Freshman to give him or her a Special gift expressing their feelings towards the new students. Everyone had an exiting lunch hour due to all the great activities especially Mike Naumoff, who got a free chocolate pie for lunch. Open Wide Mike Naumoff enjoys his lunch in a truly freshman manner SOCK HOP The annual Sock Hop was a fun-filled event with plenty of wild socks. While Rene- gade played many popular songs, the many Seniors and underclassmen danced the night away. Leave it to the Seniors to have a great dance. Jane Hill plays ringaround-the-rosy. What is that dripping into my cup? 103 ATLANTIS ROCKS CARLMONT The Homecoming dance, sponsored by the executive board, was a great success. The Student Gnion was filled with people dancing to the great music of Atlantis. Though the entire dance was enjoyed by all, the high point of the evening was the choosing of the Queen and the Big Man on Campus. Diamettia Thibodeaux and Larry Yarbrough were crowned as the winners. Gary Artist and Joe Tebo do the Slam. SCOTS TAKE HOMECOMING VICTORY The Homecoming Rally, which doubled as the Halloween Rally, was certainly one of our wilder lunch hours. The gym was crowded with people showing off their costumes and their school spirit. The game that night, against Woodside, was just as exciting. Despite the rain many people came out to root on our team, which won 25-13. During half-time the class floats were judged, with the Seniors taking the entire class competition. And the winners are Haran. . . . Jessica Shuttle and Kim Watch out behind you Sludge Monster! 106 Junior girls do the Bunny Hop. SADIE HAWKINS Take OUR picture! Mammy Yokum sure did a bang up job at getting the girls and their choices of Carlmont ' s eligible bachelors to the Sadie Hawkins dance this year. Needless to say, with 250 people showing up, it was a big success. There was at least one anxious girl for each unwilling man! A great addition to the evening was the fantastic music provided by the popular Bay Area band, The Push , who came to play at our annual hoedown. You ' ll find ' em in the back with the boys in the band Willie Turner doing his ventriloquist act! 107 WINTER 108 WONDERLAND This years Winter dance was held on December 10, 1982. Last year our varsity and JV pom pon girls had to act as cheerleaders, pom pon girls, and mascots. It was a heavy load to carry, but they came through with flying colors. This year, Carlmont has the advantage of four new squads; varsity, JV cheerleading, drill team, and mascots. We also have a new spirit squad advisor, Kordella Allen. The squads this year did an excellent job in bring- ing up the Carlmont spirit and cheering our teams on. Good job girls, and good luck to next years squads! 184 186 FINANCE BOARD 1. Tom Miller, 2. They had to coordinate the voting and make sure everyone had registered. Another big re- sponsibility was the nominating convention. At the convention, the members performed various duties Including sergeant at-arms, vote counting and plan- ning the general outline for how things would run. E L E C T I O N S 1. Manny Mariano 2. The staff worked hard on finding new, controver- sial stories; including the possible mountaineering cut, sports fee, and edito- rials varying from the nu- clear arms race to a tri- bute to Martin Luther King Jr. Oh no!! I predicted that the Raiders were staying in Oakland! You ' re supposed to have the power on??!! Rob Levinson seems frustrated by the answer in Dear Abby. VISTAS ' 83 The defunct Carlmont chapter of Junior Statesmen of Amer- ica was successfully revived by our current chapter president, junior Carolyn Tuft. The function of the Junior State is to instill in high school students an awareness of political events and confidence in public speech. Carlmont ' s chapter has made phenomenal progress in both these areas and sent delegates to Berkeley, Stanford, Gilroy, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The membership of the Carlmont chapter has grown and hopes that Carlmont will continue to harbor an active interest in the Junior State. 1. Ken Abraham (Advisor) 2. Michelle Hughes 3. Holly Junge 4. She likes being able to choose the subject she will be taking in school and feels the schools in Japan are a lot harder. She is involved in human rela- tions board and the math club. ASSE Hillevi Wahl arrived in America in August. She belongs to the American Scandinavian Student Ex- change. She likes the closeness of the families in America but feels because of this, one cannot be too indepen- dent. She states that there are more things to do here on weekend nights — more movies to see and more music groups, and about the fashions, she says we in America dress more stylishly than in Sweden. Hillevi says this school gives out more homework than in Sweden, one learns more here even though the schools in Sweden are harder. She likes the freedom to choose what one wants to take as a class. Attendance is much more strict here. One can be absent in Sweden for a week and the school simply calls your house to see what sickness you may have. Teachers, here are friendlier — almost like friends, and it is easier to become friends with classmates. 229 230 Millord Gradiska Administrative Vice-Principal Marcia Mahaffey Instructional Vice-Principal FACULTY Ken Abraham Head Librarian Edward Allan English Dave Attwood Math Rick Brown Math Larry Brueggeman Science Sandra Bush Special Ed Norma Bisignano English Pete Cocconi Math P.E.
