The HI Day Rally was held on the football field on September 12th. The upper classmen eagerly awaited the rally to welcome the freshmen; such gifts were given to the freshmen as a toilet seat, a tricycle, and baby toys. Each class had a Tun ' skit prepared for the Freshmen to perform. A few of the Senior guys (no names mentioned) had an undeveloped surprise for the crowd as they ' streaked ' across the football field. Then, a few of the Senior girls (again no names mentioned) creamed the freshman guys. More surprises were in store for the audience as the Executive Board, complete with sunglasses and party hats, performed the Time Warp from the popular Rocky Horror Picture Show. To complete the list of Hi-Day surprises, the band and the Spirit Squads both performed for the first time this school year. Special credit should be given to Tony Gotaj, and everyone involved, for making the first rally of the year an excellent one! Upper Right: Editors do other things besides Yearbook. The major pro- ject the Council worked on was the purchase of a new $1600 stereo sound system to be used at rallies, assemblies, dances, etc. The Council also worked on fundraisers such as donut sales and an Xmas ornament sale to help raise money for the new sound system. This past year, the board, headed by commissioner Mariflor Soriano, has done a tremendous job. The duties of the board involve, among other things, being in charge of promoting all the sales in the Student Finance Of- fice; dance and play tickets, T-shirts, and the like. One of the board ' s many accomplishments has been to sell tickets for football and basketball games, thus raising over $3,000 for the student body. In addition, they have sold hun- dreds of ASB cards, and have planned the 1981- ' 82 budget for Carlmont. The Finance Board is a vital and invaluable ingredient to keeping our school running smoothly. 126 ■ORGANIZATIONS Elections Board The Elections Board, headed first by Suzanne Fassett and later by Heather Soule, has had quite a busy year. The Board is in charge of con- trolling the many elections held dur- ing the school year. The duties of the Board include establishing voting pro- cedures, keeping track of the elec- tions, and encouraging students to vote. During this past year, they have been in charge of the Homecoming votes and elections, the voting for the Junior Senior Ball, and the like. During the Spring, the elections of the A.S.B. Officers and the class of- ficers are handled by the Board. Although the turnout of student voters in the past has not been great, Suzanne and Heather have both done a good job trying to encourage participation in the elections. 1st Semester — Suzanne Fassett 2nd Semester — Heather Soule B :k Row: Melanie Arndt, Lisa Baba, Lesa Horve, Lynn Watanabe, Terri Knowlton. They supervised the Homecoming Pom-Pon sales, and helped with the other Homecoming Week ac- tivities. They not only did the during-school activities but the Mistletoe Magic Christmas Dance. They also help ed on two of the Graduation functions, the Awards Assembly and Baccalaureate. 128 ORGANIZATIONS Publicity Board iommissioner — Kristin Osterman Each year, the Publicity Board does much for Carlmont. During this past year, the Board has made colorful banners to publicize all the football games and has renovated the Chimney Corners display case by repainting and installing corkboard. In addition, the Publicity Board made a felt holiday wreath which Mrs. Pervier won in a raffle, and they have also formed a silkscreening workshop in which each member learned the basics of the process. Hi-Day rally was the only one not done by the Board. An- drea broke up the Board into groups of seven or eight people, and these smaller groups came up with the ideas for the rallies. All of the members did the Homecoming, Fall Sports, Winter sports and end-of-year rallies. The most successful rally of the year was the Halloween event, with faculty and students dressing up, and a big costume con- test highlighting the rally. Andrea deserves much credit for having done a great job as Carlmont ' s Rally Commissioner. 1 30 ■ORGANIZATIONS ommunications Board The primary function of the Communications Board is to read the Carlmont bulletin every morning at the beginning of 2nd period. As far as the board is concerned, their two most momentous acts were: a moment of silence to mourn the death of guitarist )imi Hendrix and the death of Led Zepplin ' s drummer john Bonhan. They also felt that their best reader was junior josh Pollock, who managed to put a little livliness into the bulletin. Unfortunately, some of his remarks were in conflict with the standards set by the Administration and he was told to either reform or resign. He chose to resign. Readers were Casey Ford, Eric Lee, and other students on the Board. Their after-hours business and social functions were somewhat limited, a few working luncheons, two Carnelian Room dinners and several late-night conferences held locally and in San Francisco. :k Row: Eric Lee, Brian Anderson, Gary Palangian, Robert Porter nt Row: Prescott Chow, Casey Ford, Becky Brubaker, Stacy Korn ORGANIZATIONS Noon Recreation Board Its : n Back Row (L-R): Lynn Watanabe, Jeff Randolph, Tamma Kaysser, Helen Shinn, Denine Sibbert, Allyson Kume, Patty Thomas, ]oe Gillanders Shawn Ghee. FOMF, the illustrious organization that pays tribute to the infamous 13th president of these United States, has had quite a year. Although FOMF has activities throughout the whole year such as beach parties and the like, it all culminates with the annual Millard Fillmore Scavenger Hunt. The Hunt began on jan. 9 with a celebration of Millard ' s 181st birthday, complete with cake and Marching Kazoo Band. After the 49 hour marathon of trivia hunting, Carlmont came in 8th and 10th behind Cubberly and Palo Alto, but a good time was had by all (except Sandy Koufax). A year away like this from home is something you never forget. There has been both up and downs, but as a whole it has been a great ex- perience. I was lucky to come to a really nice humorous family who has given me much. I have experienced so many things that it would be im- possible to write it all down in a few sentences. It has been interesting to be at Carlmont and to be able to get to know an American school, and the people in it. I ' m enjoying my stay here and I think the peo- ple around here are more open and friendly than in any other place. It will be hard to say goodbye to everyone that I ' ve got to know here when it ' s time to go back, even harder than it was leaving Sweden, since I never know if I ' ll ever see them again. The detailed process of publishing a first- class newspaper requires the total dedication and supreme sacrifice of its Editor-in-Chief. The first week of this process involves the assignment of stories by the editors. Reporters must meet the deadline or suffer the consequences. During this time, the editorial staff copyreads incoming articles, writes headlines and pre-dummies the paper. When the copy comes back from the printer, it is cut up and pasted accordingly on the layout sheets by the editors. These proofed layout sheets are then sent back to the printer and the resulting product is - the Carlmonitor. 152 ■ORGANIZATIONS ORGANIZATIONS ■153 Vistas Back Row L-R: Debbie Barron, Scott King, Garrett Marshall, Kerry Forbes, Kevin McLaughlin, Steve Gunn, Marian Schutz, Wendy Bevilockway, Victoria Alvis. our activities in our Junior and Senior years. We have shown our unity in working on our float and banner for Homecoming this year, and we have gained a lot of valua- ble experience. We have started our fundraising by helping to sell concessions at two football games. In the future, we will have a winter Holiday flower sale in December, a dance on March 13, and a major fund raiser before Christ- mas vacation. With Mr. Welsh ' s help, we plan to use this year as a starting block for our next two years here at Carl- mont. ADS ■248 Dedication Four years ago, the Class of ' 81 set foot on the Carlmont campus for the first time. And as they did, so did Mr. Mur- ray, the new principal. Being new to Carlmont, the freshmen weren ' t affected by the change of command that had taken place in the Administration Office. What they knew was that they had a principal who believed that he should treat everyone with TLC (and was known as the principal who -ares. ) Although a newcomer to Carlmont, Mr. Murray as not a newcomer to the Sequoia District. He has been sociated with it since 1950, first as a social studies and glish teacher at Sequoia High School, then as an English nd journalism teacher in Menlo-Atherton. In 1958, he took his first job as administrator at MA. From 1958-1960 he was an administrator at Sequoia, 1960-1967 vice principal at San Carlos, and Principal at MA prior to his entrance in Carl- mont ' s history. After thirty-four years of caring and dedication, Mr. Mur- ray decided it was time to move on. The Vistas 81 staff wishes Mr. Murray well in his future endeavors. ;avo f In Closing . . . As we, the Class of ' 81, graduate from Carl- mont, we realize the time has come to leave the security of a group. Our final act as a whole on june 12th is made all the more poignant in regard to that fact. After this, each of us has decisions we must make . . . alone, and responsibilities to be faced alone. Whether the road ahead is to higher education or straight to life, we can no longer depend on the circles of high school. Let ' s show everyone what we can do! Good Luck Seniors from the Yearbook Staff. 250 ■CLOSING Editors: Staff:
