MRS. DEBORAH KIVIAHO J A Tribute Carlmont is losing a dear friend. After 17 years of service in the Sequoia Union High School District, Mrs. Deb- orah Kiviaho is retiring. She was a mem- ber of the original staff at Carlmont and has taught English and drama dur- ing her 11 years here. Previously, she taught many years in the state of Wash- ington. Because of her deep understanding of people, Mrs. Kiviaho is the favorite of many Carlmont students and every mem- ber of the faculty. She has guided many students toward their goals. Kivi, as she is affectionately called, has a knack for making literature, and and therefore life, interesting to even the most reluctant students. Many hours spent in front of a class have not dampened her vitality, wit, charm, and beauty. Mrs. Kiviaho can never really retire from Carlmont, because the memory of her presence will outlast the bricks and mortar. Mrs. Kiviaho, we respectfully dedicate this book to you. I he Lorlmont nymn L - LJL4_ _ SL Hail to thee, O Carlmont High, Proud her colors e ' er may fly, n t ]y Blue and grey, they stand for might, Teach us to defend the right. To carry out this theme, the lines of the Hymn are depicted con- tinuously on all the break pages. 7 Carlmont Administration Principal Ivan Griffin is a man with many duties, including attending such meetings as the principals ' conference, the administrative council, the faculty meetings and the curriculum meetings. He frequently confers with district leaders and community organizations, and works with the counselors and faculty. Tensions of his job resulted in an operation last fall, and Carlmont missed his expert guidance for some time. PRINCIPAL IVAN GRIFFIN Registrar Oliver Pete Eitzen spent his busiest year since Carl- mont opened working on the distribution of over 130 unex- pected students and the new quarterly grading system. Handling the disciplinary pro- blems and counseling girls was the biggest job of Mrs. Elsie DeBois, vice principal and dean of girls. She was adviser to Big Sisters and assisted Mr. Griffin at executive board meetings. Francis Ferry, vice-principal and dean of boys, has his fun supervising athletic competition, but his fun is followed by the hard work of handling discipline and attendance problems. 8 District Administration Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees, Left to Right: Dr. David Sears, Ferris Miles, Superintendent Rex H. Turner, Mrs. Helen Kerwin, John A. Cost. Not Shown; Richard Price. The District Administration was smoothly run this year by Dr. Rex Turner and the Board of Trustees. Under the direction of District Superinten- dent Dr. Rex Turner, testing, maintenance, building plans and checking of general curri- culum was accomplished. The five trustees, elected by the voters of the Sequoia union high school district, set policies, budgets, taxes, and planned building expansions. DR. REX H. Seniors have a choice of Development Reading, Senior Com- position, Language and Thought, World Litera- ture, or English IV combination. Eleven lay readers helped ease the theme- reading load on English teachers. The staff numbered 18 with the addition of a new teacher, but average class size continued to run high, over 32. About 1,000 students use the library daily. Mrs. Phyllis Speck, Mrs. Phyllis Miller, Miss Esther Firth, Mrs. Elizabeth Hershel. Custodians The custodial staff has stated that this has been one of the best years in keeping the school clean. According to Dave Whestone, vandalism this past year has been very limited. The most serious of- fense was that of the breaking in of the girls ' locker room during Christmas va- cation. He feels that Chimney Corners was kept fairly clean during the lunch periods but would like to see more improvement next year. Working with the administration, teachers, parents, counse- lors, doctors, and school psychologist, she has administered first-aid, as well as care for the mental and emotional health of the students. In addition to this she gave hearing and vision tests. Office The office staff ably handled the many problems of Carlmont students this year. By the end of the eight-win, one-loss season we not only had tied for our first league championship but had buried our closest rival, Sequoia. It was the first time in our nine-year var- sity football history that we had defeated the Cherokees. For that matter it was the first time in more than three years that anyone had beaten them. During the season the Redwood City Tribune chose six athletes of the week. Of these, three — Andy Sears, Chuck Hunt, and Rick Brown — were from Carlmont. The same three were elected to both the All-SPAL, and All- County first-string teams. Greg McHuron, Jim Wright, Andy Sears, and John Watts earned positions on the SPAL second team. Barry Venditti and Jerry Golins received Honorable mention. Chuck Hunt was elected both All- SPAL and All-County player of the year. When the South Peninsula sports writers got togethei to vote for the Coach of the Year, Dick Storm was unani- mously elected. The coaching story has its own bit of in- terest. This is Coach Storm ' s last year at Carlmont. Next year he will be in the world of business. Actually the de- cision was made before the start of the season, after sev- eral years of consideration. Coach Storm credits the whole team with the effort needed to win the championship. This year there was a close harmony among the players, as well as between them and the coaching staff. Movies were taken of eyery game and shown to the team every Monday in an intensive chalk talk. 29 Scots Smash Sequoia Win-Streak, 22- 1 3 Proud alumni will call it Carlmont ' s fin- est hour. At our Homecoming game nearly 7,000 fans were on hand to see Sequoia ' s 33- game winning streak smashed by the most determined and talented team ever fielded by the Scots. It was cool precision in the backfield, hard hitting on the line, and spec- tacular defense that formed the combination that couldn ' t be held back. Carlmont won 22 to 13. Cross-Country We aren ' t worried by anyone next year. Cross-country Coach Loren Lansberry has good reason for confidence. Of the 11 -man squad, only three are seniors. To carry this further, sophomores Mike McCann, with a two-mile time of 9:52, and Ken Nichols, 10:01, are northern California ' s sec- ond and third fastest runners. The varsity team placed second in the league, won the northern California title for large schools, and ranked fourth in the NorCal section finals with a team time of 50:37. Sophomore Mike McCann made the all Nor- Cal team. These four runners were on the all- league team: Mike McCann, Ken Nichols, John Mills, and Kent Walters. The same four made he all-county team. The varsity water polo team ' s best win this year was an 18-13 victory against Se- quoia in overtime. All in all it was a 5-win 8-loss season. Junior Mike Blondell has a host of rec- ognitions. He was the only Scot on the all-league team; he was the leading scorer with 40 points; and he was elected most valuable player. Also taking honors was Gene Watson, who scored 36 points and was elected co-captain with Jim Watson. Dennis Landes was most improved player. Eric McHuron was elected most inspira- tional player. Varsity Basketball This year ' s varsity basketball squad was def- initely the most aggressive team that I ' ve coached. In his five years of coaching varsity basketball at Carlmont, Coach Gene Hawley has handled some good teams, including one varsity championship. In spite of the third-place finish, we outscored our opponents with a season total of 1,015 points, compared to 946 scored against us. We beat Ra- venswood, the league ' s top team. Captain Rick Brown and most valuable player Chuck Hunt made all-league. The most improved player award was a tie between Bruce Bowhall and Jack Sandin. Our moment of glory came during the Sunny- vale tournament, which we won for the third year in a row. We defeated Washington 54-30, Black- ford 52-29, and Sunnyvale 56-38. B Basketball Given a very young team this year (five freshmen and seven sophomores in a squad of 14), Coach Al Piparo was faced with the possibility of winning very few games. His fears came true; in a league play the first 11 games were lost. The situation could have continued, but Coach Piparo developed a new system which he calls the 2-1-2 press. Results were immediate; the next three games were won. The team also placed second in the Los Altos tournament, bringing the season total to 8 wins, 13 losses. Captain this year was Ken Torre, most valuable player was Jeff Green, and most improved player was Tony Egan. D Basketball Call it inexperience, bad luck, or what- ever you want, but Coach Campey ' s D basketball team didn ' t win a game. In spite of the record, skills were developed which will help future teams. Captain Larry Treadway was high scorer, elected most-valuable player, and made the all- league team. Gary Brady was most-im- proved player. LUCKY 7 45 FIRST ROW: Paul Teaga, Dan Swanson, Jim Kepley, Jack Rosicky, Frank Regnataro, Tom Oliverio. Although we produced one of the best teams ever, a few consistent weaknesses kept us to a fourth-place fin- ish. The four-win five-loss record could have been an eight-to-one tally, as four meets were dropped by only one match. Two seniors were league champs. Kay Bell, in the 191 pound class, lost none in 11 times out. Rip Sears, at 138, lost only one. With 36 schools competing in the Northern California Section finals, both Dan Swanson and Fred Nold placed sixth in their class. Rip Sears, who also wres- tled at a North Coast Invitational meet at Sacramento, placed fifth in the NCS meet. The different events included the running broadjump, shotput, high jump, hurdles, relays, discus, Softball throw, and the 100- yard dash. Miss Norma Hill, PE teacher, throughout the season aimed at setting some new records in these events. SANDY GAST IS FLYING HIGH. 56 Tennis Eighty girls participated in after- school tennis. In a district tennis sports day held at Sequoia, Carlmont came home with first-place honors in singles. Sandy Meyers, Nancy Cunningham, and Adri- enne Lopez represented Carlmont at this tennis meet. NOW WHAT IS MY NAME? ASKS PUZZLED VOTER. THE CANDIDATES STAND AT ELECTION ASSEMBLY. The Carlmont band spent an exciting day, April 9, at Disney- land. The sharp-sounding and looking band played a forty- minute concert in the pavilion near Main street. Band members and parents alike, and especially the hard working of Mr. Reed, made the memorable trip possi- ble. Sinks . TINKERBELL ' S WHAT??? Varsity Baseball vim ' 4 ' 2 A 1 FIRST ROW: Dick Barsocchini, Manager, Bob Kelly, Joe Merritt, Jack Rosisky, Tony Egan, Frank Silva, Phil Perucca, Manager. SECOND ROW: Chuck Hunt, Rick Brown, Al Smith, Rich Harry, Gary Stout, Greg McHuron, Randy Brooks. THIRD ROW: Bob Kasich, Fred Reynders, Steve Caria, Mike Rose, Ron Fell, Bruce Bowhall, Jeff Miller, Coach Bill Hurst. MISSING: Rick Lelo, Tom Vowell, Randy Ceruti. For the first time in the history of Carl- mont, the varsity baseball team won an un- tied league championship. One thing can be said — it was different. We scored the fewest runs of any club in the league. Our run production was the lowest in recent school history. Only three players batted over .300. The credit goes to outstanding pitching. Ron Fell pitched three shutouts. At one time he had gone 29 innings without a run scored against him. In two years he has won ten games while losing only two. He has an overall earned run average of less than one run per game. Steve Caria pitched a no-hitter against Cubberley and a one-hitter against San Car- los. The two pitchers combined for a no- hitter against Sequoia and a one-hitter against Ravenswood. Caria, most valuable player and SPAL player of the year, pitched 38 innings, allowed only seven hits, while striking out 65 batters. Bruce Bowhall, Rick Brown, Steve Caria, Ron Fell and Al Smith were on the all SPAL teams. The baseball season was a fitting climax to the best sports year we have ever had. We took league championships in football, base- ball, track, and gymnastics. 1 67 GARY STOUT, JACK ROSICKY, GREG McHURON, RICK BROWN. Frosh-Soph Baseball Coming on strong in the homestretch, the frosh soph baseball team moved from last to second place in the league stand- ings by winning six of their last seven games. Frank Pignataro, most valuable player, pitched five winning games and also had the team ' s highest batting average. Richard Engelbert was most improved player. Ken Torre and Richard Wald- schmidt were co-captains. FIRST ROW: Ken Torre, Pete Sakelarios, Doug Roberts, Richard Engalbert, Frank Pignataro, Richard Watts. SECOND ROW: Rich Brandenberg, Pat Savage, Charles Bunker, Gene Lenzi, Bill Edwards, Dan Cicero. THIRD ROW: John Barulich, John Crowe, Charles Myrack, Dan Stoner, Richard Waldschmidt, Bob Emery. THIRD ROW: Jeff Nelson, Henry Barenz, Tom Grimm, Dennis Phillips, Jim Dixon, Gary Larson, Bob Diviard, Andy Sears, Archie Houle, Russ Belinis, Coach Loren Landsberry. V arsity Track As usual, Coach Lansberry called it a build- ing year. As usual, we won every meet. This ran the winning streak to 35 consecutive meets and five years straight without a defeat. We also broke a handful of school records. Andy Sears, most valuable player, set records for the 100 yard dash at 9.8 seconds and the 220 at 21.7 seconds. Mike McCann ran the 1320 in 3 minutes 13 seconds. Roger Royal ran the 330 in 36.2 seconds. Jules Rovere ran the 75 in 7.8 seconds and the 150 yard dash in 15.0 seconds. Tom Grimm was most improved player and Jim Dixon was team captain. No current student has ever seen a Carlmont track team lose a meet. ARRIVING AT THE BALL. I KNOW IT ' S ON THERE SOMEPLACE. 178 PRINCIPAL IVAN GRIFFIN CROWNS QUEEN DONNA. The graduating class of 1963 held their senior ball, Tonight, in the Pacific room at the Villa hotel from 9:00 to 12:30. The couples in formal attire danced to the music of Ken Campagna ' s band amid sparkling city lights. The red and black city outline was en- hanced by one dimly lit street light. Cathedral paper decorated both ends of the dance floor, and a large mirrored ball hanging from the middle of the ceiling reflected lights and a vast array of vivid colors. Queen finalists were Barbara Updegraff, Liz Guarino, Donna Harding, Karen Jones, and Sandy Tice. The Highlight of the evening was the crowning of the queen, Donna Harding, by Principal Ivan Griffin. She was presented a bouquet of flowers and a royal crown was placed upon her head.
