The music of Jack Fisher ' s six-piece band accompanied enraptured couples as they twirled beneath a large rotating sphere, which cast shafts of blue and silver light across the dance floor. VARSITY FOOTBALL Carlmont ' s varsity football squad gave its rooters many gridiron thrills this year as the Scots rolled into a sixth place finish in the South Peninsula Athletic league. Starting oft the season with four straight wins, the Scots looked as though they would finally win a football championship. But disaster struck in the form of fumbles, interceptions, and key injuries, and the Scots didn ' t win another game the rest of the season. But who will forget the exciting running of halfback Bill Lufrano when he rambled through a tough Menlo-Atherton defense for the unheard of total of 191 yards in one game? Who will forget the exciting passing combination of Chuck Hunt to Arnold Gilpin for their fabulous last second touchdowns against Red- wood and Sequoia? Who will forget the long distance punting of Bob Sawyer at the beginning of the season? Who will forget the sensational line play turned in by Kay Bell, Rod Liner, Barry Vendetti, Alan Mobley, Bob Zipf, Henry Newman, John Madsen, and Jim Wright? Who will forget the fabulous coach- ing job of Dick Storm? There are the things that will go down in Carlmont football history. These boys should be remembered for giving their all and not giving up until the final gun had sounded. Chuck Hunt sets to pass against Palo Alto Carlmont . Carlmont. Carlmont. Carlmont . Carlmont . FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL New coach Haro ld Myers suffered a dismal beginning in his Carlmont coaching career as he saw his pigskin squad struggle to a 3-4 won-loss record. Highlights of the season were the running of backs Marv Anderson and Ed Woodhall, the passing of Andy Sears, and the line play of Jerry Golins, Jerry Mortensen, and Fred Nold. CROSS-COUNTRY Despite bad breaks, injuries, and disappointments, Carlmont ' s cross-country team still made its presence felt in Northern California competition this year. The varsity, although badly hampered by injuries and sicknesses, gave Palo Alto a strong race for the South Peninsula Athletic league championship but finally had to settle for second place. Junior Grant Long, top varsity fwo-miler, finished another year up front, placing sixth in the all-SPAL finals. He was followed by team captain senior Steve Higbee, junior Jim Trogdon, sophomore Jack Sandin, junior Kent Walters, senior Doug Merritt, and junior Jim Dixon. Larry Russell, Doug and Don Trekell, and Tim Mason filled out the front line of the junior varsity team. The JV ' s finished a close second to Palo Alto. The sophomore and freshman squads finished their season by passing every team in the league by a wide margin. Dave Knight, Steve Daulbert, Ron Renard, and Don Strachen paced the soph team to victory. The frosh, perhaps the best in Carlmont history, boasted as their leading runners Ken Nichols, Greg McCann, and Doug Frost. ARSITY WATER-POLO Experiencing their ups and downs, but mostly downs this season, Carlmont ' s varsity water polo team finished fifth in South Peninsula Athletic league standings. Coach Glen Kovas praised seniors Jim McKendrick and Gordie Martin for their stellar performances. McKendrick was elected captain by his teammates and Martin received the most valuable player award. FROSH-SOPH WATER-POLO The frosh-soph water polo team, like the varsity, also experienced a few bad breaks and had a com- paratively poor season. Coach Glen Kovas says that he groomed several boys on the frosh-soph team for the varsity next year. Mike Blondell, who re- ceived all league honors and was elected the team ' s most valuable player, is the brightest prospect com- ing up. Blondell also led the frosh-soph in scoring. VARSITY BASKETBALL Fighting right down to the last game, the varsity basketball squad surprised many of the experts and numerous opponents this year. According to pre-season predictions, the Scots were not sup- posed to win more than two games in the tough South Peninsula Athletic League. Led by the aggressive play of Steve Caria, who coach Hawley terms as the most aggressive and strongest athlete at Carlmont. The Scots proved themselves one of the most stubborn teams in the SPAL compiling a 5-9 mark. Caria, The tallest 6 ' 1 player in the league, according to opposing coaches, gave many of his taller opponents nightmares with his uncanny ability to follow his shots and his scrappy play under the basket. Rick Brown and Chuck Hunt, the Scot ' s two sharp-shooting guards, were equally troublesome with their accurate shooting and aggressive play. Brown was selected on the second all-league squad plus lead- ing the Scots in scoring for the year. Hunt was elected captain of the team and Brown was elected the most-valuable-player. John Warren, a steady rebounder for the Scots during the season, and Jim Worden, a player with almost perfect fundamentals, received the most improved player award. B BASKETBALL Coach Al Piparo ' s B squad found the going a little tough in mid-season and finished in sixth place with a 6-8 record. Having to build his basketball team over night be- cause three regulars didn ' t make the weigh-ins, coach Piparo fielded his usual well-coached team. But inexperi- ence was the key factor which kept the Scots out of con- tention this season. Three one-point defeats coupled with bad luck helped contribute to the Scot ' s poor record this year. Ray Prara, elected team captain and most-valuable-player, had a sensational year, making the all-league team and finishing as the second highest scorer in the league. Prara ' s co-partner in crime, little Gordie Bell, was a constant headache to his opponents with his scrappy defensive play and his pin-point ac- curacy from the floor. Al Smith and Bruce Bowhall, the two leading rebounders on the B ' s , were instrumental in helping Carlmont lead the league in rebounds. Rich Merritt was a key factor in many of Carlmont ' s victories. Andy Sears, who coach Piparo relied upon as his strongest reserve, aided the Scot offense with his rebound ability. Gordie Bell floats in for a layup against Ravenswood. Ray Prara (10) against Cubberly. 67 First Nold Sears Row: Tom Oliverio, Bob Peri, Ron Kline, Gordon Block, Don Klingner. WRESTLING Although experiencing a disappoint- ing season in league competition, Coach Hal Myers ' grapplers had several promising wrestlers. Rich Ayres won first-place in the SPAL finals in his weight class and fourth in the NCS sec- tional meet. Fred Nold, Rip Sears, Frank Jower, Rick Lelo and Kay Bell performed creditably and will head a strong entry next year. 68 Dale Nelson, Coach Hal Myers and Rich Ayres. Paly, the only real threat to Carlmont suprem- acy in the league, fell to the Scots 58y 2 -54y 2 early in the season. Both teams were evenly matched in this crucial meet and the result was in doubt up to the final event— the 880 yard relay. Anchorman Jerry Rose pulled the meet out of the fire for Carlmont as he flashed across the finish line far ahead of his nearest competitor. Besides starring in the relay, Rose also took first place finishes in the 100 and 220 yard runs. Al Rockwell, Carlmon ' s star hurdler, copped firsts in the high and low hurdles. These first place finishes by the Scots were the only undisputed top honors that they took during the meet. But as it had all year, the terrific depth of Coach Loren Lansberry ' s squad was the deciding factor. Al Rockwell zips to win 120 high hurdles during Palo dual meet. First Row: Steve Mahoney, Steve Yeghoian, Bob Regli, Ralph MacArthur, John Lorok, John Jeanes, Paul Lawson. Second Row: Eric Schiller, Lou Lazarus, Gordy Olson, Bill Thompson, Harry Pancoast, Joel Meredith, Oscar Badilla, Coach Jim Henderson. TENNIS It was a building year for the embattled Scot tennis team. Of Coach Henderson ' s first nine men, only one, Warren Sabak, was a senior. Sabak, who played third singles and second man Bob Regli had the only varsity experience on the club, besides Ralph MacArthur. Transfer student Lou Lazarus, a sophomore, proved to be a pleasant surprise for the Scot mentor, along with fellow soph Bill Thompson, who showed promise as a JV player last year. V A R S I T Y First Row: Jim Worden, Gene Watson, Mike Jones, Allen Martin, Jim Watson. Second Row: Mike Blondell, Dick Pogue, Jerry Golins, John Watts, Dave Gray, Mike Spear. Third Row: Tom Astrella, Pete Nicoletti, Bill Watson, Gordon Martin, John Griffith, Coach Glenn Kovas. SWIMMING Coach Glenn Kovas and his young swim team faced a building year this season. According to coach Kovas, the swimmers were too inexperienced for the tough SPAL competition. In going over his individual talent, Kovas singles out Jim Watson in the 400 and 200 yard free-style. Gordie Martin, Jim Worden, and Mike Blondell also saw a lot of service for the Scot varsity this season. Jerry Golins, a North Coast Section champion diver in the B division last year, shined in that department for the Scots. The B ' s featured Eric McHuron, Mike Jones, and Dennis Landis this season. GYMNASTICS Encouraged by the large turnout, Coach Piparo hoped that future teams at Carlmont will continue to grow stronger and challenge the powers of Hillsdale, Palo Alto and San Mateo. Even with several lettermen back and a large return from last year ' s squad, the 1962 edition was unable to chal- lenge for the lead. Leading scorers were Mike Koslosky in Parallel Bars and Rings, Garry Garner in Trampoline, Carmen Ribera in Horizontal Bars and Rings, John Baughman in Horizontal Bar, Bill Mahoney in Side Horse, Jerry Sherlock in Rope Climb, and Larry Schenfeld as the team ace in Free Exercise and Tumbling.
