if! 7 The Past is Prologue All that man is and all that he hopes to be stems from the knowledge and experience of mortals long silenced. The past is a priceless repertory of ideals, hopes, successes, failures, and knowledge; it is a fountain of comfort and strength for all who seek it. With- out the heritage of the past, the pres- ent would be meaningless. Schools like Carlmont could not exist, for man would have nothing to teach to his children. Between these covers are only a few short hours of the past. The pages speak of a year in the lives of a small group of people — a year that weaves their lives together for the last time. Soon time will render these pages invaluable, and perhaps each one of us some day will find here that source of strength which man has found in the heritage of the past for all ages. — Vanna Ketterman, ' 61 2 Table of Contents Administration and Faculty 4 Sports 22 Seniors 50 Government and Clubs 90 Classes 116 The Year in Review 140 Advertisements and Index 152 Staff Editors Steve Roger and Larry Hoffman Sports Karl Thunemarm Art Mike O ' Rourke Advertising Managers Judy Marsh and Dick Page Staff Secretaries Paul Carson, Shirley Mann and Joanne Billings Sales Manager Ronnie Frankel Photography Gene Bailard and Walter Jacoby Staff Writer Dee Hansen Adviser Milton Goldman 3 4 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Administration Checking curriculum, testing, main- tenance, building plans, and, in general, keeping six high schools running smoothly keep Dr. Rex Turner, district superintendent, constantly on the move. Also busy were the district Board of Trustees, a five-member council elected by the voters of the Sequoia union high school district to set policies, budget, taxes, and building expansion. DR. REX H. TURNER Man on the go! This is Principal Ivan Griffin. Being faculty adviser, working with counselors, and conferring frequently with district leaders and community organizations, kept Mr. Griffin a man on the go. As dean of girls and vice-principal, Mrs. Elsie DuBois counseled girls, co- ordinated student activities, and parti- cipated in PTA projects. Vice-principal Francis Ferry is dean of boys, overseer of attendance, super- visor of athletic competition, and advi- ser to the student welfare committee. A hard-working man in every sense of the word. Vice-principal Pete Eitzen enrolled new students, advised coun- selors, and directed the annual mam- moth registration process. OLIVER EITZEN, MRS. Secretaries and Nurse 12 The heart and pulse of the school are centered in the office, where efficient secretaries channel distraught teachers and students to the proper authorities, handle attendance records, lockers, lists of all sorts, make students ' con- nections with counselors, and take care of countless other duties. Miss Rita D ' Avino, school nurse, was kept busy patching up football players and sending home students who were ill from an overdose of school. MISS RITA D ' AVINO Library and Bookroom Keeping track of 10,000 books and 175 different periodicals required the full-time attention of Miss Esther Firth, Mrs. Phyllis Speck, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hershel. This year a new checkout system was used to cut down book losses. Mrs. Hershel, with the aid of stu- dents, managed the distribution of the textbooks. MRS. ELIZABETH HERSHEL, MRS. PHYLLIS SPECK, AND MISS ESTHER FIRTH To teach is to learn twice Don ' t stop reading yet. These next few pages contain numerous hidden surprises and photos of the classes you ' ll always want to remember, clas- ses which carried on the fine tradition of academic excellence at Carlmont. Music This year the Christmas program, the Band-o-Rama and the Spring Con- cert displayed the talents of the music department. Our outstanding marching band performed at sports rallies and games. The department offered four choral and three instrumental courses. HEY, LOOK, YOUR FEET ARE WET LET THERE BE RAIN English A new advanced standing English course was offered to qualified freshmen this year, enabling them to take a col- lege English course in their senior year. When they enter college, they will be placed in a sophomore English class. Senior electives in Drama, Composi- tion, Developmental Reading, Business English, World Literature, and English IV became voluntary for the first time this year, 70 per cent of the seniors signing to take one. Foreign Language Constantly surging forward, the language department introduced a new program of audio-lingual instruction. Three tape recorders were purchased to aid students in audio-comprehen- sion, and a language lab was initiated in order to provide tapes of native speakers. In addition to French, Spanish, Ger- man and Latin, Russian was again offered this year. SAY FROMAGE Home Economics Suburbia will not suffer a lack of qualified housewives if the homemaking department can help it. This phase of training means many things here at Carlmont. Not merely clothing, textiles, foods, and nutrition, but also family relationships, child development, housing, plus home man- agement and health. Business Carlmont ' s business department con- tinued its drive to keep Wall street sidewalks supplied with grey flannel suits and starched collars. Practical office mechanics, such as typing, dictation, and shorthand, were stressed in order to prepare the student for the realistic business situations he will face. HOW DO YOU MEASURE UP? THE ROCKETTES PLUS FLYING FRIEND Boys ' PE Under the leadership of Bill Hurst, boys ' PE department head, the new silver class was formed, consisting of the top 40 athletes whose physical fitness point averages ranged from 325 to 388. Their schedule this year includ- ed fiagball, tennis, badminton, and a senior livesaving course, which enabled them to receive a senior livesaving card from the Red Cross. Mr. Hurst taught the regular silver class, and Gene Hawley taught senior livesaving. Girls ' PE This year girls kept fit by partici- pating in many after- school activities, such as hockey, tennis, swimming, and basketball. These sports were also offered during the entire year as part of the curriculum for the girls ' PE department. THE DESCENT OF MAN EARN $40 A WEEK IN YOUR SPARE TIME? HAI OF COURSE, THIS IS JUST A ROUGH ESTIMATE . . . I Science Potential scientists searching for life ' s secrets were not hamstrung by conventional teaching aids, such as lengthy texts and regimented lectures. They were turned loose in the labs to experiment and gain a knowledge of theory through practical experience. In addition, the Lenkurt Electronics Lab opened at Sequoia, providing 14 Carlmont students with intensive training in physics through practical problem-solving. Social Studies In a drive to increase the number of well-informed citizens, the social stu- dies department embarked on a pro- gram designed to make students world conscious. Its main goal was to inform pupils of crucial problems facing the world and to activate an interest in events beyond our own borders. Art Art and craft displays in Chimney Comers captured the imagination of students and showed the kind of work being done in Carlmon ' t extensive art program. Students learned to appreci- ate art in freehand, drawing, painting, figure drawing, general and commercial art, crafts, and ceramics. Industrial Arts Drafting and wood and metal labor- atories were the three main subjects taught by the Industrial Arts depart- ment. In metal lab, students learned welding, forging, sheet and bench metal, and lathe operations. In wood lab, the lathes were con- stantly turning out projects of the stu- dents ' imagination. The drafting courses ranged from be- ginning to advanced drafting, which in- cluded highly complicated mechanical architecture. Mathematics Even though no one told them that 2 + 2=5, students learned by a slightly different approach from the Yale Mathematics program, in its second year at Carlmont. Teachers used in- ductive rather than deductive teaching methods. In this way the student works several examples and formulates a gen- eral rule to govern that type of prob- lem. Courses were offered in general math, algebra, geometry, and advanced math. WAIT TILL THE BOYS AT CANAVERAL SEE THIS ONE HOPE HE HAD BLUE CROSS Classified Personnel Famines in India, dust storms in the Ukraine, and droughts in the Mid- west did not phase Carlmont ' s cafe- teria staff as they fought an equally perplexing dilemma: feeding 1,800 students a day, five days a week, 36 weeks a year. They proved more than equal to the task, however, because no Carlmont student missed a day of school due to rickets or deficiency of vitamin K. SORRY, NO MORE CHANGE— TAKE TWO MILKS 20 YOU FOUND WHAT IN THE SOUP? The district ' s bus drivers again proved themselves able navigators of peninsula highways and seldom dis- appointed eager students patiently waiting for the 7:19. Popsicle wrapers, lunch bags and other unidentifiable blobs offered little resistance to the brooms of the Carl- mont custodial crew as they swept through another year. SUNNY CALIFORNIA .... The running attack was paced by driving fullback Harlan Halvorson and swift halfback Gary Gaskill. Quarterback Mike Sears hit 50 per cent of his passes, throwing mainly to Gaskill, Stan Phillips and John Camou. The Scots scored upsets over M-A, 25-7, and Cubberley, 13-0, while they compiled a 4-2 league record. A hardcharging line, led by tackles Alf Haerem and Allan Mobley, and guard Gary Fairbanks, shaped up much better than ex- pected. Haerem and Halvorson both made the sec- ond-string all-league team. Gaskill was the team ' s leading rusher with 356 yards in 69 carries and a 5.2 average. Halvorson gained 321, and senior halfback John Sullivan, out much of the time with injuries, gained 222 yards for a 6.3 average. Now this is a football . . . Carlmont clashed with the Vikings early in the season and battled to a 6-6 standoff. Five Carlmont stars were selected to a 22- member all-league squad and two others re- ceived honorable mention. All-league players were halfback John Watts, tackles Jim Wright, Ralph Adamich, guard Barry Vendet- ti, and end Don Clodfelter. Honorable men- tion was given to signal-caller Rick Brown and guard Jerry Mortensen. SPAL opponents could score only 21 points in seven games, while the Scots rolled up 131 points. John Warren was the scoring leader with 30, and John Watts was close behind with 24. Watts was the team ' s rushing leader, gaining 353 yards for a 4.6 average per carry. Although he missed part of the league season, senior forward Bill Jay was on the all-SPAL first team, and Dave Brodhead, who stood out defensively at his guard position, was second team. Other stars were Gordy Mar- tin, Jim McKendrick, Doug Kuehn, and Steve O ' Laughlin. FROSH-SOPH The frosh-soph squad suffered through a mediocre season, winning only two games. Bob Suddjian was one of the team ' s bright spots, as he made the second all-league team. Steve Caria, Suddjian ' s running mate at forward, helped spearhead the Carlmont offense. Gaskill, who placed on the -all-league quin- tet, took over completely after John DeVos was injured, leading the squad in scoring and rebounding like a demon. He scored 299 points in 22 contests. Gene Hawley ' s five sported one of the few victories over champion Palo Alto, a 47-41 contest. The activities available this year were hockey, modern dance, swimming, basketball, softball, and volleyball. By participating in six sports, girls were able to earn a sports block. They were allowed to play in three sports a year in each of their first three years of school, and in four during their sen- ior year. Each girl participating belonged to one of five clans, which were used as a basis for intra-mural competition. 46 1 Cheerleaders and Pompons Football and basketball players face many risks, like broken noses, legs, arms, and lost contact lenses. However, all these catastrophies are made to seem inconsequential by Carl- mont ' s moral doctors, the cheerlead- ers, whose yells convince the fallen hero that his sacrifices and pain mean a glorious victory for team and school. Three hundred couples danced to the music of Bob Emerson ' s 11 -piece band, and later in the evening, they saw IDiane Markley crowned queen of the ball. Pre-ball activities found Carlmont seniors dining and partying at various spots on the peninsula and breezing to the dance anytime up to 10:30 p.m. After the dance, some couples met a conservative 3:00 a.m. deadline. Oth- ers kept going all the next day. QUEEN DIANE MARKLEY AND JIM SARAFINSKI 89 ar?d Glub|) 90 Student Government The main branch of student govern- ment at Carlmont is the legislature. Once a month, representatives elected from the admin classes convene in the library to discuss common problems and enact legislative measures to solve them. Student Court A student who is caught eating in t he halls receives an ominous orange summons telling him to appear before the court. The student court is not the front for a secret police organization. On the contrary, it attempts to identify itself with true institutions of justice: Parli- ament, the House of Burgesses and, ac- cording to some, the Spanish Inquisi- tion. School Spi ' ' it Board The Social- Cultural Board has the job of promoting sociability and cul- ture at Carlmont. The board ' s progress in the first field was debatable, but they succeeded notably in the second by presenting high quality assemblies to the students during the year. JAN DYE Sparking interest in sports events was still the main duty of the School Spirit Board. Rooters, both at rallies and games, were encouraged to yell louder, longer, and more enthusiastic- ally. This practice had the effect of in- spiring players to win games, including an upset win over Cubberley. FIRST ROW: Linda Markham, Penny Dahl, Sandi McDaniel, Linda Beattie. SECOND ROW: Judy Allen, Pat McGinnis, Judi Wills, Janet Wolfe. 96 Girls ' Sports Board The main purpose of the Girls ' Sports Board this year was to spon- sor after-school sports.
