Ay Faculty v 9 KARL BAUER VERNON GLEASON LOUIS FRANGIONE Along with new spaceMdeas and Sputnik came a new display of interest in art at Carl- mont this year. Evidence of this interest was (y shown in the number signing up for General and Applied Art in summer school last year. As a result classes were expanded. Along with this growth came a new addi- tion to the department, Vernon Gleason. After being a student teacher at Carlmont last year, he is now employed as a teacher of General and Applied Art. Karl Bauer is head of the department, and f)ther members are Louis Frangione and Richard Inman. RICHARD INMAN

Deans Why docs Mrs. Elsie DuBois, dean of girls and vice-principal, always seem so busy? The main reason is that her job covers so many duties and responsibilities. Aside from rescuting kittens from lockers, her main con- cern is the counseling and guidance of the girls. This alone is a time-consuming respon- sibility, and many hours were spent sitting at her desk talking and listening to the girls and guiding and advising them in any prob- lems they might have had. Mrs. DuBois was also adviser to the Carl- mont Girls Association. She directed stu- dent government through the board of com- missioners, assisted the P.T.A. in planning activities, assisted faculty members in the activities of clubs, coordinated co-curricular activities, and assisted the principal in his duties. MRS. ELSIE DUBOIS Francis Ferry, who took over the position of dean of boys following the death of Mr. Terremere, served under the highly esteemed principal for three and a half years and served at Carlmont even longer. Mr. Ferry acts first of all as assistant to the principal, doing jobs assigned him. Sec- ondly, he must supervise the attendance desk and take care of attendance problems. Mr. Ferry also decides who is eligible for school athletic teams. Fourthly, Mr. Ferry super- vises student and campus discipline. Mr. Ferry does not feel there is a serious discipline problem at Carlmont, and he thinks that the students are, on the whole, very fine. He feels that his job, in regard to discipline, is one of helping rather than punishing, and he hopes that he will be able to be both firm and just in his new role as dean.

English Department What keeps 20 English teachers busy? Teaching the many courses that were offered this year at Carlmont, many of which were electives. Besides the required three years of EngHsh for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, there was the senior elective program, which is an experimental program being tested not only here at Carlmont but at other schools in the Sequoia high school district. Examples of these English electives offered are Language and Thought, World Literature, and the regular English IV. Next year there will be no required English for seniors, but it will be offered for those who wish to take it. DO YOU SPELL ' A CAPELLA ' WITH TWO OR THREE L ' s? ' 12
