A ' P ( We dedicate this book to the meijiory of Principal Albert J. Terremere, Jr Administration Seniors CHJLhJL Qc K op , ulmXIv Administrators Ivan Griffin, who took over the job of principal in January, came to the Sequoia union high school distr ict 16 years ago and taught English at Sequoia high school for three years, then became registrar and head counselor for the next four years. When Carlmont first began in 1952, Mr. Griffin was appointed to serve as vice ' principal under Dr. Krogh. Mr. Griffin says that Carlmont, the fourth school at which he has served, has the finest student body he has encountered anywhere, scholastically and as far as standards of conduct are con- cerned. Dunng the spare time which is not too frequent in Mr. Griffin ' s life, he enjoys home gardening, fishing, and camping. The reasons for Mr. Gnffin ' s lack of spare time become obvious as his duties and responsi ' bilities as principal are unfolded. Mr. Griffin is responsible to the superin- tendent of the Sequoia union high school district for the complete functionings of Carlmont high school. He must maintain relationships between school and the com- munity a nd make out reports for the board and community organizations. IVAN GRIFFIN Dr. Rex Turner, superintendent of the Sequoia Union high school district, is accountable for the total responsibilities of the district, which include the teaching cur- riculum, testing, cafeterias, maintenance, and planning for expansion, even though these duties are delegated to many different people. The district includes five high schools, counting the new San Carlos high school, in an area of about 100 square miles from the bay to SkyHne Blvd. and from San Mateo to Palo Alto. A typical day of Dr. Turner ' s would in- elude conferences with some of the many people who -take charge of specific district problems, board meetings, all kinds of paper work, and perhaps a visit to one of the schools under his jurisdiction. Dr. Turner ' s average day is 15 or 16 hours long, includ ' ing the work which must be done at home. DR. REX TURNER Deans Why docs Mrs. Elsie DuBois, dean of girls and vice-principal, always seem so busy? The main reason is that her job covers so many duties and responsibilities. Aside from rescuting kittens from lockers, her main con- cern is the counseling and guidance of the girls. This alone is a time-consuming respon- sibility, and many hours were spent sitting at her desk talking and listening to the girls and guiding and advising them in any prob- lems they might have had. Mrs. DuBois was also adviser to the Carl- mont Girls Association. She directed stu- dent government through the board of com- missioners, assisted the P.T.A. in planning activities, assisted faculty members in the activities of clubs, coordinated co-curricular activities, and assisted the principal in his duties. MRS. ELSIE DUBOIS Francis Ferry, who took over the position of dean of boys following the death of Mr. Terremere, served under the highly esteemed principal for three and a half years and served at Carlmont even longer. Mr. Ferry acts first of all as assistant to the principal, doing jobs assigned him. Sec- ondly, he must supervise the attendance desk and take care of attendance problems. Mr. Ferry also decides who is eligible for school athletic teams. Fourthly, Mr. Ferry super- vises student and campus discipline. Mr. Ferry does not feel there is a serious discipline problem at Carlmont, and he thinks that the students are, on the whole, very fine. He feels that his job, in regard to discipline, is one of helping rather than punishing, and he hopes that he will be able to be both firm and just in his new role as dean. Ay Faculty v 9 KARL BAUER VERNON GLEASON LOUIS FRANGIONE Along with new spaceMdeas and Sputnik came a new display of interest in art at Carl- mont this year. Evidence of this interest was (y shown in the number signing up for General and Applied Art in summer school last year. As a result classes were expanded. Along with this growth came a new addi- tion to the department, Vernon Gleason. After being a student teacher at Carlmont last year, he is now employed as a teacher of General and Applied Art. Karl Bauer is head of the department, and f)ther members are Louis Frangione and Richard Inman. RICHARD INMAN English Department What keeps 20 English teachers busy? Teaching the many courses that were offered this year at Carlmont, many of which were electives. Besides the required three years of EngHsh for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, there was the senior elective program, which is an experimental program being tested not only here at Carlmont but at other schools in the Sequoia high school district. Examples of these English electives offered are Language and Thought, World Literature, and the regular English IV. Next year there will be no required English for seniors, but it will be offered for those who wish to take it. DO YOU SPELL ' A CAPELLA ' WITH TWO OR THREE L ' s? ' 12 Business Department Two new members were added to the staff of the Business department this year, Don Teani and Stan Fox. Mr. Teani taught typ- ing and business EngHsh. Mr. Fox, in addi ' tion to being adviser to the finance board, taught typing and bookkeeping. The Business department this year offered basic courses in typing, shorthand, book- keeping, and office practice, as well as special courses in business English sales and business law, and business math. The Carlmont Business department pro- vided a complete curriculum for the student interested in earning a living in the business world. However, college-bound students also benefitted from courses, such as typing and shorthand. JONETTE JOHNSON LEARNS CALCULATING PROCEDURES Homemaking Department MISS DOLORES MRS. MARY MRS. IMPIE SCOLARO GORE LAGESON MRS. ROSALYN MRS. BERNICE LYANG THURSTON The Homemaking department offered the basic principles of sewing and cooking in Homemak ' •• ing I, after which students were able to continue in either Foods I or Clothing I. For those students who had homemaking in seventh or eighth grade, the Home Ec department offered four years of foods or clothing, with Foods III and IV cooking turkey dinners and other large meals, and Cloth- ing III and IV making coats and formals. TOO MANY COOKS, ETC. DO WE HAVE TO EAT THE STUFF, TOO? 14 The foreign language department offered students a full four years ot French, Spanish, German, and Latin. A two-year expenmen- tal course in Russian was started under the direction of Sergie Gregoriev. Department head Arthur M. Cutler feels that the present goal of foreign language teachers emphasi:;es the aural-oral approach rather than reading and writing. ■PEMSEZ Foreign Language Department •WHADYSAY? I A GORDON DEEGAN A ROBERT McCORMICK MISS LOIS HENDERSON 15 Music There is more to teaching music than one usually realizes. When one hears the music groups, he can never imagine all of the off ' key singing or playing that took place in the classroom. Teachers try to teach more than just sing- ing or playing of an instrument. They try to convey the skills that are necessary for superior standards of performance, and they try to instill an appreciation of good music. This year there were three music teachers : Jerry Einarsson, Russell Reed, and Dan Border, a newcomer to the department. WHERE ARE MY BASSES? Industrial Arts .4 JERRY EINARSSON DAN BORDER RUSSELL REED ■i i 1 I M ADOLPH ROMERO CHARLES ACCURSO DONALD McLEAN ' s , 1 CARROLL JENSEN WHITTLING AWAY TIME The industrial arts department includes the wood and metal shop divisions. Sculpture in wire and wood are annual projects of each shop. A basic knowledge of the workings of the machines and tools is given to the boys along with a funda ' mental knowledge of design so that students will use their own imagination on their individual projects. Math New things happened this year in the Carlmont math department with the intro- duction to the Yale Plan. The Yale Plan was named and started hy a group of students at Yale university who devised a method for teaching higher math to high school students. Carlmont is one of the few high schools trying this plan out. The teachers from the different high schools met at Stanford uni- versity throughout the year to iron out prob- lems. If the plan continues to he successful, it will he a permanent part of the Carlmont math department as a four-year plan. ■TRY AND PROVE IT ' p. E. Dept. CLEANLINESS IS OUR POLICY! MISS ARLENE L. COUGOULE LOREN LANSBERRY Boys ' and girls ' P.E. departments have been stressing fitness with fun the past year. Despite overcrowded conditions, both departments offered varied programs. Boys were rated according to athletic ability in classes of whites, reds, and blues. The pro- gram includes 14 sports, although each class does not receive all 14. Added to the established girls ' P.E. program were year-long classes of advanced and inter- mediate dance and advanced swimming. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS? 18 Science Department WALTER COTTLE MRS. RUTH HULL JOSEPH ZUCCA RICHARD DE VOE PAUL MERRICK DAVID ATTWOOD JAMES LINDHOLM RAYMOND GOTTHOLD JERRETT ROLLINS WHO ' S GONE, MAN? The Science department underwent many changes under the guidance chairman, Walter Cottle. The Physiology class had a change of text that includes more activities, more on endocrinology and metabolism, and more on chemistry, in addi ' tion to the structure and physiology of the body. As a result of summer revision, the emphasis in the General Science course was on individual student project work and comparative anatomy study, including new project laboratory experi- ence. The Science Fair, co ' sponsored this year by the P.T.A., was the biggest event of the year for the Science department. Approximately 200 people organized and helped the fair get under way. Twenty-three displays by different industries were a major attraction, but the main attraction wis still the students ' projects. The object of this fair was to focus attention on the many talented science students who deserve recognition. The Science department ' s staff is extremely well- trained and experienced. They have had, all together, 56 years of college work, each teacher having at least six years of college. These teachers hoped to enable students to live in a rapidly moving and scientific world. The classes should help students to think and reason more logically and might interest some of them in scientific professions. WILL IT EXPLODE? MRS. KATHLEEN SULLIVAN Social Studies Department LEGISLATURE ELECTION The Social Studies department now has four years of required courses. The seniors were given a variety of electives instead of just Government and Social Phychology. The new courses included International Rek ' tions, Far Eastern Affairs, and Fundamental Economics. The juniors still had U.S. History, while the sophomores began their second year of required World Backgrounds. World Geog- raphy, which took the place of Orientation, was continued this year for the freshmen. LYNCH PETER GALASSi SAN JOSE?? 20 Secretaries Keep School on Even Keel Not all creative writing and acting was confined to English and drama classes this year. Day after day, the attendance desk received numerous interesting and imagina ' tive excuses from students. These covered everything from nose bleeds to Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The office workers also were treated to various personal performances by students. Such excuses as ' Tm just plain miserable and I ' m allergic to teachers were imme- diately rejected by the observant personnel. MRS. NORMA PHILLIPS (NOT SHOWN: MRS. RUTH WOODRUFF) MRS. DOROTHY MAHONEY, MRS. DORIS BOOKMAN, MRS. ROSE BRADY. MRS. MILLIE NAEGEL Hard working members of Carlmont who contributed much to keeping the wheels of the school running smoothly were the counsellors, custodians, and nurse. Counselors guided students through the year, lived through innumerable program changes, and gave them helpful advice concerning their school work and future. New to Carlmont this year was the nurse, Mrs. Margaret Sallady, who was helpful and understanding to all who visited her office. The custodians worked diligently all year at the never-ceasing job of keeping the school neat and clean. They are owed many thanks for all the jobs they did, including picking up zesty pop wrappers strewn on the P.E. steps. WHAT BIG EYES YOU HAVE! I KNOW I BURIED IT SOMEWHERE. WHITMORE JOHN WOODHALL BERNICE WIGHTMAN RON YOUNG 55 Seniors Ml RONN KAISER LYLE JOHNSON GARY WILLIAMS Under the capable guidance of the senior class advisors headed by Jack Hollenberg, the class of 1960 brought to a close its four eventful years at Carlmont. Few will ever forget the festival days, the games, the junior prom Exotica, and the biggest night of all four years, the senior ball Candlelight and Gold. Then came senior week and graduation, the last time the members of the class of ' 60 would stand together before each went his separate way. Each student has come a long way from that day four years ago when he entered Carlmont for the first time. The achievements of the class of ' 60 will be rC ' membered for many years to come. Back Row: John Quick, Mike Hellon, Lyle Johnson, Gary Williams, Ronn Kaiser. Front Row: Diane Olson, Barbara Madson, Suzanne Combs, Sue Taylor, Sally Normand. Seniors Sparkle in the Candlelight The excitement on Friday, April 22, which made senior students obHvious to their teach- ers was understandable. Candlelight and Gold, the senior ball, was held at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club that evening. Two hund ' red and eighty couples and several adult guests danced from 9 to 12 to the music of Ray Hackett. The Travelers, a vocal trio, provided the entertainment during intermission. The outstanding event of the evening was the crowning of queen Carole Taylor, chosen from the five finalists by the senior boys. In the lounge, colored pictures were taken by Smith Studios. Also in the lounge, Mrs. Grace Coles played the piano, with songs such as The Man I Love and Where Are You being requested by the relaxing students. After the dance, the evening had just begun for many seniors. Some climaxed the night with a trip to San Francisco and others at many various parties and breakfasts. A rainy day finale found many of the seniors at the beach. On Monday seniors were again unreach- able by the teachers because of the lack of sleep and tired blood. They knocked off a mediocre St. Francis eleven, 13-7, losing halfback Gary Gaskill for the season. Mike Chasey came of age as a star in the next tilt against newcomer Ravenswood, scoring three td ' s and leading the team to a 33-7 victory. Then the Scots, on successive weeks, lost to Palo Alto, 20-6, Cubberley, 19-12, and Menlo-Atherton, 2?- 19. The Highlanders captured their second league victory with a hard-fought 13-7 win over the Woodside Wildcats. The 13-5 record compiled by the mermen was second best in the school ' s history. Frank Frisch finished third in the league in scoring, setting a new school record of 54 goals, and was voted the squad ' s most valu- able player. Frisch placed first on the all ' SPAL squad, while co-captain Jim Edwards made second team. Bill Jay, who hit 38 goals as a junior, should be big gun next season. Other stars this year were defensive standouts Dave Brodhead, Don Carlson, and co-captain Jim McKune. Al Bergeson and junior Mike Shaw handled the goalie duties brilliantly. 68 CAPTAIN — JIM EDWARDS RICK DAMLOS FROSH SOPH STARS — JIM PIEROG AND GORDY MARTIN MVP FRANK FRISCH Water Babes Equal Varsity Performance Captain Gordy Martin, with 34 goals, ranked second in the league. Dur- ing each eight-week sport season, the girls meet twice a week with the members of their clans. The clan system is used as a basis of intra-mural competition. This year ' s program consisted of hockey, modern dance, swimming, badminton, vol- ley ball, Softball and basketball.
