Teachers cracked down and made students work harder than ever. Students worked, trying to live up to the Cal Merit Award given to Carlmont this year for the grades maintained by ' 58 Carlmont graduates attending the university. In addition to scholarly gains, Carlmont opened 10 new classrooms in the T wing. Fifty parking spaces were added on the Alameda to accommodate the ever increas- ing student body. Carlmont will be remembered not only for its scholastic records but for its activities, the dances, rallies and assem- blies, sports events, and its campus. To capture all the memories of this year, we have set them down, in words and pictures, on the following pages. Apparently a few of them had never been to a dance before. At the first CGA assembly, a beautiful hot day in the glen, no one knew what was happening, but who cared? The girls were getting out of sixth period. To prepare for the future, seniors and juniors and their parents attended college day at Woodside High School where representatives from several col- leges were present to answer questions. ASSEMBLY 25 GIRLS RIDE ON TO THE FIELD The Carlmont-Sequoia game was well attended by people who came to see the crowning of the sports queen as well as the action on the field. The five finalists rode out onto the field, each trying not to fall out of the car, wave, and look nonchalant at the same time. The A.V. crew must have been overcome by the excitement of the occasion because the microphone didn ' t work. Even without the microphone, however, everyone present knew that Sandy Hildebrand was chosen queen. After she was crowned, Sandy and the other four girls were escorted off the field, the game was resumed, and the A.V. crew quietly crept out of the stadium. Holding up the tradition of the past two years, the Carlmomtor staff again paid tribute to the greatest woman in history, Susan B. Anthony. Interplanetary A. M. EPSTEIN, A FIRST-PRIZE WINNER IN SCIENCE FAIR Cake sales throughout the year brought joy to the Sle nderella rejects, despair to those on rigid diets, and money to the organization spon- soring the sale. The track team didn ' t have to wait for a cake sale, however. To get a cake, a whole one at that, all a track man had to do was break a record. The public was invited to see the fair during lunch periods on April 2 and 3 and on Thursday night, April 2. Before T wing was completed, many students were able to jump piles of lumber with ease, walk on said piles without get- ting their shoes full of sand, and had be- come used to the many loud noises that accompany the building of ten new class- rooms. After the last workman had faded off into the horizon, we knew the rooms were finally done, except for students, teachers and writing on the new black- boards. Gridders Rack Up Best Season in Garlmont Their season-opening tromp of Westmoor served notice to the SPAL that Carlmont ' s ' 58 football club was through being the league patsie, and this turned out to be the case as coach Bob Robinetfs Scots produced a 4-2-2 overall record and a 1-1-2 league slate. After polishing off the Daly City men, 32-6, they pulled a stunner in holding perennially tough McClatchy of Sacramento to a 13-13 tie. This contest proved the junior-laden line to be ready and waiting for its league foes. But the offensive unit never got off the ground in the league opener against one of Palo Alto ' s weakest teams in many years, and the Scots had to settle for their second straight tie, 6-6. The Cubnerley Cougars threw a massive line at the Scots which ren- dered the backfield of all-SPAL full- back Bill Kutzer, halfbacks Chris Jes- sen and John Woodhall and quarter- back Jim Arveson practically useless, and Cubberley came out on top, 7-6. But the club pulled together and by holding Menlo-Atherton to 18 net yards total offense it gained its first league victory of the year, 14-0. The biggest upset ever pulled by a Scot football squad came next, as they came from behind in the final seconds to wrest an 18-14 victory from power- ful Vallejo in what was supposed to be the biggest mismatch of the year. In their final league tilt they were worn down by a tremendous Sequoia outfit, and, after holding the Chero- kees scoreless until the last three min- utes, they succumbed, 12-0. The gridders then obliterated an impotent St. Francis club, holding it to 23 net yards rushing, to bring Carl- mont ' s first winning football season. COACHES DICK STORM AND 40 -fe- ll istory it. FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL Undefeated Eleven Captures SPAL Championship Now a realization rather than just a dream, Carlmont ' s first football cham- pionship rests in the cleats of the hard- fighting frosh-soph gridders. For a team that at the season ' s begin- ning was expected to finish third or fourth in SPAL action, they proved un- der coaching of Sam Nicolopulos and Bill Hurst to be unbeatable. In a six-game span, the dark-horse Scots punched out the fantastic average of 387 yards per game, 33.5 points per game, and gave up only 9.8 points per game. Inclinations of what the frosh-soph was destined for arose when the football gladiators upset a Palo Alto squad 12-6, going on to edge Sequoia 21-20 in the season ' s toughest battle. All doubt was erased when the Scots were never chal- lenged, beating Ravenswood 50-7, Cub- berley 33-13, Woodside 46-0, and Men- lo-Atherton 39-13. Individual stars of the gridders were Gary Gaskill (46 points, 1 1.3 average net yards per game), Harlon Halvorson (60 points, 10.3 average net yards), John Sullivan (48 points, 9.8 average net yards), Mike Sears and Rich Epting. to£Jfi%ffl ENTHUSIASTIC OFFENSE CHARGES 44 HARLON HALVORSON AND BOB GOLLING TACKLE RUNNING ATTACKS COMPRISED THE OFFENSE HALVORSON SPRINTS AROUND END The freshman team — Back Row: Steve Eitz,en, mgr., Steve Berlin, Ron Pellignni, Doug West, John Kerhulos, Mike Fadden, Doug Merritt, Rod Liner, Mike Cohen, coach. Back Row: Marion Haley, Ron Hegarty, Bob Convey, Jack McCartney, Jim Reams, John Quick and Bryan Petty. Carlmont ' s varsity cross-country team, capturing second place in the SPAL and the NCS, was honored as the fourth best team in the United States. Defeated in dual meets only by its near neighbor, Palo Alto (ranked the best team in the nation), Carlmont ' s harriers turned over an amazing scholastic two-mil e course time of 51 :45. Coached by Loren Lansberry and aided by Phil Arnot, the track rabbits broke the record time of every course they scurried across. Seniors Jim Reams (fourth best runner in the U.S.) and Marion Haley (tenth best in the U.S.) packed the team ' s power- house, while juniors Tod Ragsdale, John Quick, Jack McCartney, Ron Hegarty, and Bob Convey ably backed it up. Jim Reams ' 9:49 for the Stanford two-mile course ranked him fourth in the U.S. Marion Haley ' s 10:06 ranked 10th. In addition to this, the board of welfare initiated the auto safety check. Sec ond semester chief spirit was Jerry Ellsworth. NOON REC BOARD BARBARA NEILSON In general, the noon rec board tried to present culture without popcorn — movies not old enough for TV but too old for the movie houses. All checks from the stu- dent body were signed by the board, which also prepared the budget. The student body card trophy was accidentally dropped during an assembly. Since that time, the trophy has been kept hidden in a dark corner of the finance office. PUBLICITY BOARD JIM REAMS Everyone has seen the colorful posters portraying the crushing of all Carlmont adversaries. These clever murals of Carlmont vie ' tories, which served to instill school spirit and enthusiasm in the average student, were thought up and executed by the publicity board. Under the leadership of president Pete Albin, vice-president Richard Epstein, secre- tary Rod Albin and adviser Milton Cerf, they sponsored several stamp auctions. At left are members Judy Mellum, Pete Albin, Lewis Hayler and Richard Gould. 86 Key Club The real reason why insurance com ' panies have deserted this campus can only he attributed to the Key Club. This all male club has directed traffic at all school functions. The service minded big brothers took on the burden of publishing the student directory which came out in March. They proudly announced that no more than five people of each different letter were left out. The club assisted their sponsor, the Kiwanis club, in a Christmas tree sale this winter. Officers were president, Steve Crocker; vice-president, Bill Lamprecht; secretary, Sue Conens; treas- urer, Bobbie Petitclerc; parlia- mentarian, Bob Craig, and presi- dential adviser, Don Kates. Club advisers were Miss Jean Hender- son and Philip Arnot. The JSA ' s biggest discovery came in December, when it dis- covered it was flat broke. During the year, TOCS was visited by consuls, instructed in certain foreign languages, and in- troduced to European visitors. 88 Audio - Visual The audio-visual department underwent a major re-organiza- tion. The department functioned as smoothly and efficiently as ever. Each member of the crew had a chance to run the 91 pieces of equipment and gave his time for activities during class time and after school. The crew heads, Dave Ricci, Gary Brasfield and Bob Elliott, under Bob Robinette, adviser, did a fine job in carrying out the duties of the audio-visual de- partment. GGA Among the more exclusive or- ganizations at Carlmont, one finds the Carlmont Girls ' Association. Unfortunately, its exclusiveness is begrudged by a few minority groups who call themselves boys. CGA boasts officers who are not only pretty but are also big think- ers. President, Dee Roberts; vice- president, Toby McMann; secre- tary, Linda Hunt; treasurer, Robin McMann, and adviser, Mrs. Carol Berg. Through their hard work Carlmont girls have been able to attend informative assemblies, a memorable Hi-Jinks, fashion shows, and a Twin Twirl dance. The scrap book will include a picture essay of Carlmont and the school ' s many functions. The club, directed by Robert McCormick, has also had two suc- cessful cake sales during the year. Back Row: Richie Lyman, Sharon Reyes, Sharon Hanes, Myrna Jackson. Front Row: Eleanor Arnold, Linda Barnard. 90 Chess Club Stressing abstract perception, the spirited Chess club sprinkled wits against itself on the red and black battlefield. A challenging sport, though unrecognized by the SPAL, chess stimulated and de- veloped some of Carlmont ' s most profound thinkers (notably Rod Albin, Richard Epstein, and Bob Dean). Looking forward to the graduating checker players, the club expects to increase its present 12 member quorum to 20 next year. Back Row: Edward Smith, Louis Hayler, Rodney Albin, Jon Miles, Larry Miller, Richard Epstein. Front Row: Betty Schulte, Bob Soul, Peter Albin, Joe Duncanson, Bob Dean. Business The limited membership of the Business club swelled temporarily on November 4 when they held their annual pot luck. Although their adviser didn ' t show up, the girls had a good time later at Sil- houette. A few of the girls worked dili- gently on the student directory. Unfortunately, it wasn ' t published. Outside speakers enlightened tne girls on topics of interest (money, boys, careers) several times during the year. Back Row: Beth Chesterman, Kay Barberi, Elsie Mulley, Judy Workler, Sue Lippke, Marie Gyllenskog, Annie Hersom. Caduceus Always an active group at Carl- mont, the Florence Nightingales of the future chose a new name this year and plunged into a full sched- ule of activities. They started the year with a course in standard first aid given by a Red Cross represen- tative, which all enjoyed. Later they took a trip to St. Luke ' s Hos- pital in San Francisco. Mrs. Jane Doty, a faculty adviser to Ca- deuces, arranged to have several films on health and nursing shown to the club during the spring sem- ester. Scotties The service-minded Scotties have appeared at many Carl- mont activities including foot- ball games, concerts, Baccalau- reate, the Christmas dance, and the Junior Prom. Aside from taking tickets at the games, ush- ering and serving refreshments, the Scotties had two cake sales. From time to time, the club purchased various articles for the school. Standing: Donna Brandes, Thelly Taylor, president, Deanna Gilbertson, Lynn White, Gloria Gorton, Kalane Larson, Sharon Clark, Mary Orser, Judy Winn. Seated: Sandy Neff , Dede Cole. Art Club Two weeks before Christmas, the Art club announced it would hold two meetings a week in a des- perate attempt to finish thei r paper mache nativity scene for the dis- play case in Chimney Corners. Per- haps next year they will hold three meetings a week. The rest of the year, the club worked on individual projects. Tears were shed over sat-upon pieces of sculpture, and oil paint was spattered over still lifes. The group visited the Rosicru- cian museum and an art show at the Emporium. Back Row : Eddie Sherry, Tony Torres, Bob Capitolo, advisor Karl Bauer, Janet Wolfe, Linda Beattie. Front Row: Paul Leuteritz, secretary; Judy Leadley, president, Karen Gillen, Camille Casagrande. Not Shown : Steve Cabrera, vice-president. 93 Big Sisters The Big Sisters (minimum height five feet ten inches) energetically attacked the problem this year of familiarizing new girl students with Carlmont by graciously giving up their boy friends to the lonely strangers and resigning their class offices to make way for the new ' comers. This orientation included a get together ' 1 in November among the Big Sisters, new girl students, and officers of the CGA. During the refreshments, the group had a question and answer period. Among the questions of the new comers were: Do Carlmont boys prefer blondes, brunettes, or red- heads? and Who ' s that cute teacher in D16? Back Row: Val Nelson, Terri Thomas, Carole Taylor, chairman, Nan Philip, Di Bogdan, Sue Taylor, Linda Ellis, Ann Hilpisch. Second Row: Sandy Pomeroy, Suzanne Combs, Judy War- den, Linda Shaw, Judy McLaughlin, Sandy Hildebrand. Front Row: Bonnie Roberts, Callye Hig- bee, Val Judd, Pat Terrill, Rose Burke. FTA Yes, these are the Future Teach- ers of America! This lively group spent the entire first semester col- lecting dues. The second semester saw a little more action — the Fu- ture Teachers made sc rapbooks, bean-bags, and other toys which were distributed to children in hos- pitals during Easter vacation. A field trip to observe teaching methods at San Jose State College was on the spring agenda also. Officers of the FTA are: Cathy Roumasset, president; vice-presi- dent, Anita Niederhoff; secretary, Don Hearst; treasurer, Joan Sebas- tiani; and publicity chairman, Phyl- lis Gress. The long preparation for this big event took up most of the monthly seminar meetings ad- vised by science teacher Walt Cottle. A field trip to visit the cyclotron at Berkeley was also planned. Joe Goodrich, vice-president, appeared on the TV program, Science in Action on January 19, where he demonstrated his cloud chamber. Joe Goodrich and his cloud chamber. The 82 band members spent March 23-25 in Disney land where they performed and also were set loose with 10 free tickets. Carlmont placed third in the SPAL novice tournament and fourth in the league standings. Gymnastics Carlmont ' s rapidly improving gymnastics squad, like last year ' s astonishing NCS champion B squad, gave notice in early sea- son meets that it was considering ing itself for the SPAL cham- pionship. Clobbered in its first meet against Sequoia, the varsity came back to be touched out 76K 2 to 6 3 2 while the B ' s tied at 72 points. Coach Al Piparo ' s gymnasts were led by Jim Crowell, Ed Lindsay, LeRoy Parker, Les Blum, Steve Eddy, Tom Hogan, Dick Michael and Hunter McLaughlin. Disorganized and moth-eaten, Carlmont ' s varsity nevertheless possessed the top all ' around potential of any peninsula team. Notable per- formances were Bob Stevens ' 10 flats in the 100-yd. dash, Al McCain ' s 22.5 and 52 in 220 and 440, Chris Jessen ' s phenominal over 54 ft. in the shot put, Todd Gaskill ' s over 6 ft. in high jump, Stan Philip ' s 1 1 ft. pole vaults, Scot 880 relay ' s 1:35s, and Todd Ragsdale ' s 2:05 880. TRACK AND FIELD Varsity Defeats Paly for Championship Carlmont ' s varsity track team de- feated the Vikings of Palo Alto 60-53 and clobbered Menlo-Atherton by an unexpected 70-54 for the SPAL dual meet championship. Possessing a fantastic depth, Coach Lansberry ' s varsity held leading track marks in every event but mile (domi- nated by Paly) and the 120 high hurdles. Chris Jessen accomplished the most notable individual performance of the year with his over-54-foot shot put throw. Todd Gaskill set a school rec- ord in the high jump, O i feet. Barry Sheldon and Ron Landini led the B and C teams. FREESTYLERS AWAIT GUN Carlmont ' s 1959 varsity swim- ming team finally stopped building for the future and emerged as a first-class squad. Through Charlie Rogers, Dave Caldwell, Gary Bart- lett, Jim Hodges, Frank Frisch and Denny Durkin ' s efforts, barely one school record withstood the on- slaught. Other schools felt the effect as Carlmont won 10 and lost 2 dual meets, ranging from the 79-4 score against Ravenswood to the 44-42 loss handed by Sequoia. Rogers battled Caldwell for the individual medley record, Frisch battled Rog- ers for the 200-yd. freestyle record, Bartlett fought Durkin for the breaststroke record, and Hodges battled the books for the backstroke record. A profound depth in the squad, coming from Jim Edwards, Rick Damlos, Skip MacMichael and Don McCready, helped coach Glen Kovas put forth in his first year the Scot ' s toughest aquamen. Tennis Team Plays for Fun Coach Emmett Lynch ' s 19 9 racket squad set down a Tennis for Fun program as its mem- bers faced a dreadful season in which they will probably be clobbered by every team in the SPAL. Dave Meredith showed the team ' s only hope of winning a set as he began his third year as top-seeded player. In the first four dual meets the team lost, 10-0, 10-0, 7-0 and 7-0 . 144 DAVE MEREDITH BOB PETERSON HOCKEY PLAYERS PLAYING CRICKET SECOND U.S. SATELLITE LAUNCHED Girls ' Sports Five clans, eager to do something besides drink ' ing milkshakes or watching television after school, sped through an after-school girls ' sports program offered by the women ' s physi- cal education department. Competing for clan championships in each of the sports, the girls played tennis, hockey, basketball, swimming, volleyball, baseball, and badminton. o ike 9 doA i o ike HILLSDALE Mkxppj244sUf, Getdesi 146 INDEX Aamodt, Virginia Lee — 87, I 10 Aaronson, Stuart Alan — 82. 38, 90, I 10, 144 Aaronson, Tim Scot — 72, 82 Ackermann, Nancy Louise — 64 Ackerman, Wayne R — I 10 Ackley, Kent Herbert — 72 Adams, Shirley Ruth — 64 Adams, Susie Elizabeth — 72 Adams, William George— I 10 Adamson, Harry Joe — 40, 43, 72 Addison, Franklin Hull, Jr.— 56 Ahem, Kenneth Eugene — 64 Akers, Robert W.— 72 Albin.
