After one year he resigned and was appoint- ed astronomer in charge of the observatory, which position he held for two years. l-le took his doc- tor's degree in ISS6. ln i887 he came to Carleton as instructor in astronomy and assistant director of the obser- vatory. The next year saw him the assistant professor in astronomy, and he continued to move steadily upward, until, in l908, upon the resignation of Dr. Payne he be- came full professor and director of the observatory. Dr. Wilson is in charge of one of the most important and valuable departments of the college, for the Good- sell observatory is very efficiently equipped in every way for celestial study and photography. A great deal of time has been devoted by Dr. Wilson, and by his predecessor, Dr. Payne, to original research and to the publication of the widely known magazine, 'gpopular Astronomyf, Much time also has been devoted by him to photography, and he has made several expeditions to photograph certain phases of the celestial phenomena. Last year was spent by Dr. Wilson at the Lick obser- vatory, in California, where he had the regular appoint- ment of assistant astronomer. We are glad to. welcome Dr. Wilson back to Carleton and trust that the Greater Carleton, for which he has so earnestly and unselfishly labored, may be more fully realized. -,113-5 H L N 4 ,f 1 r f 1' s Q N x f J C ,,.g Xzigz-anger ' 8' ' . 1 2 A 5 NY -.
